Pacquiao is back, but how back is he? Saturday's fight against Barrios will reveal all
Back in the ring. Back as a headliner.
But back to what he was when Pacquiao was one of the planet's most dominant fighters, building a massive fanbase and a gold-standard resume that put him in the International Boxing Hall of Fame last month? That is the real question.
He will get a chance to answer it Saturday night when the 46-year-old from the Philippines will try to take the WBC welterweight belt from Mario Barrios. It will be Pacquiao's first fight since losing by unanimous decision to Yordenis Ugás nearly four years ago. His last victory occurred in 2019, a split decision over Keith Thurman.
'Saturday night, it's going to be a great fight,' Pacquiao said. 'It's been a while that I've been out of the ring, but I'm still active and exercising all the time. I'm going to prove to everyone that I'm in great condition.
'I've been enjoying training camp like I did in the past, just like when I was 26 years old. The discipline is still the same. Even with my layoff, my passion is still there.'
Barrios, a 30-year-old from San Antonio, is a -275 favorite at BetMGM Sportsbook to spoil Pacquiao's return. But he needs to bounce back from a split-decision draw on Nov. 15 against Abel Ramos that dropped his record to 29-2-1, 18 wins by knockout.
'Manny is one of a kind,' Barrios said. 'He's not an easy style to copy in training camp. We've gotten a lot of different southpaw looks, so I'm feeling extremely comfortable.
'It feels amazing to be in this position. I poured everything into this sport since I was (a) kid, and now I get to walk the (Las Vegas) Strip with my family and see my name all over. It's something that I've always dreamed of. Now it's my job to show why I'm going to continue to be the champion.'
The build-up to this bout hasn't come with the usual forced hatred that envelops many title fights. The combatants even chatted during the standard face-off pose at Wednesday's news conference and then broke into laughter.
Hard to imagine that happening at a Gervonta Davis presser.
Barrios cautioned not to read too much into the mutual respect and admiration when it comes to what the action in the ring might look like, that each boxer would bring his all.
Pacquiao enters with a resume that includes 12 world championships in eight divisions as well as a 62-8-2 record with 39 KOs. He's considerably older and gives away about seven inches in height to the 6-foot Barrios.
Pacman is back, but how back he truly is will be revealed Saturday night.
'I've been a challenger many times and it's always the same feeling,' Pacquiao said. 'I'm excited to take the belt. He's a good fighter also, but our job is to entertain the fans. We're going to give them a real fight.'
In the co-main event, WBC super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora (21-1-1, 14 KOs) will face Tim Tszyu (25-2, 18 KOs). Fundora emerged with a split-decision victory over Tszyu on March 30, 2024.
The WBO stripped Fundora of his belt for taking the rematch rather than face mandatory challenger Xander Zayas.
'It doesn't matter what happened in the first fight because we have the second fight coming up,' Fundora said. 'Tune in Saturday, because it's going to be another great war.'

Lakers' Bronny James scored a ridiculous amount of points in the 4th quarter tonight vs. Celtics
To say Bronny James took a while to get going Thursday night would be an understatement. But when the Los Angeles Lakers' famous second-year guard got going, he did it in a hurry. LeBron's son had zero points through three quarters against the Celtics in Las Vegas NBA Summer League action. At the end of the fourth quarter, Bronny had 18 points. It wasn't enough to lead a comeback, as the Lakers fell 87-78. It definitely made Bronny's supporters feel better about what was shaping up prior to be an ugly night, though. MORE: Damian Lillard's Portland legacy is officially secure Bronny added five assists, three rebounds and a steal for the game. He went a bit viral in the first half for a tough drive move that resulted in an ugly turnover. But as Bronny got comfortable with how the Celtics were playing him, he was able to find his way to some buckets. Now the Lakers will be hoping he can do a little more of that before the game gets out of hand. Turki Alalshikh Cuts Ties With 2 Fighters For Being Disrespectful
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 22: He Turki Alalshikh speaks onstage at Fanatics Fest NYC 2025 at Javits ... More Center on June 22, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by) Turki Alalshikh has a few deal breakers when it comes to doing business with him and Riyadh Season. If a fighter and their team disrespects him, his country, or religion, he will cease working with them. If you need any proof, look no further than Alalshikh's current stance against Floyd Schofield Jr. and Teofimo Lopez. Alalshikh was a guest on Tha Boxing Voice's podcast on Thursday, and the boxing powerbroker made it clear he doesn't want to work with Schofield or Lopez anymore after the negativity that spewed from the fighters—or in Schofield's case, his father. Alalshikh was asked what Schofield's status was with him. "Okay. But put yourself in my shoes," Alalshikh replied. "This guy [Schofield Jr.]Schofield's publicized stint in the hospital after falling ill was mentioned, but Alalshikh didn't budge. He further detailed the severed relationship. 'If I were someone who didn't care about boxing, I would have told Shakur, 'Thank you, goodbye,'" Alalshikh said. 'Here's $50,000 for your camp.' But I brought in another fighter for Shakur on just 36 hours' notice. If Schofield was really in the hospital, okay, I believe him. But why did his father go to the media and lie about us, about how we handled everything? None of what they said was true. We have the emails, the WhatsApp messages—he thanked us. Everything. Look, this is the problem: if you treat us like regular promoters—lying, using bad language—then you're making a mistake. We are different. We respect you. You respect us. We don't do this for money. I'm not losing money if he's not on my card. Maybe other promoters tolerate behavior like that to benefit from certain fighters. Not me. I don't care. Respect me—you'll get my full support. Disrespect me—and I'll move on, and you'll be the one chasing me." In February, Schofield was scheduled to face Stevenson. However, after falling ill, he was removed from the fight and replaced by Josh Padley. Stevenson won the fight by unanimous decision, and Schofield was blasted in the media. Schofield Sr. said his son was poisoned and that led to his illness. Alalshikh took exception, and the relationship has been damaged. Schofield isn't the only one. Alalshikh was also asked about his relationship with Lopez, who just fought on a Riyadh Season show in May. 'Let me tell you something,' Alalshikh said. 'I don't want to go into exact numbers or contract details. But here's what I'll say—if you don't respect my country or my religion, you will not do business with me.' Alalshikh was also asked if he'd have anything to do with Lopez's rumored bout against Richardson Hitchins. "I will not be involved in that fight." Alalshikh is likely referring to a short video Lopez posted, in which he insulted his country and religion. Lopez has made a habit of making racist remarks, and apparently, someone with power and influence is holding him accountable. Lopez has made a habit of making racist remarks and apparently, someone with power and influence is holding him accountable. Alalshikh has turned the sport of boxing on its ear with massive financial support that has produced dream fights. He recently announced all Riyadh Season fights would be available to any DAZN subscribers for no extra charge moving forward. Because of his matchmaking and fan-friendly moves, he's able to put fighters on a bit of an island away from the fights that will pay them top dollar. Lopez and Schofield appear to be two of the biggest examples.

Speedy Nets rookie Nolan Traore off to fast start in summer league
LAS VEGAS — The Nets added an NBA-record five first-round picks last month, four of whom suited up and made their summer league debuts Thursday. It's no surprise the one who adjusted the quickest is the one who plays the quickest: lightning-fast Nolan Traoré, one of the highlights in an opening 90-81 loss to OKC. The French point guard was the only Nets rookie to crack double figures with 13 points, three assists, three rebounds and several quick bursts into the lane. He was even fighting through an early ankle injury while shaking off first-game jitters. 'That was a little bit hard because I rolled my ankle really early. … It took awhile. You've got to go into it quickly and be ready. So it wasn't that long,' Traoré said. 'I was a little bit [sore] on the break with the ankle. But it's all right. I'll be right back on Sunday.' Traoré twisted his ankle and gave way to Ben Saraf with 6:22 remaining in the first quarter and the Nets down 8-4. By the time he came back in for the Israeli guard, they trailed 24-18 with 8:20 left in the half. The speedster finished as the only Net with a positive plus-minus. 'I think his speed translates very well,' said Nets assistant Steve Hetzel, who is coaching summer league. 'We definitely put him in some actions where he could throw it and get it back and try to attack the rim. I thought he handled himself well with the physicality. I think, for all of our rookies, that's something that's gonna come over time. Getting in the weight room and their bodies maturing. So I look forward to that.' While Egor Demin was the Nets' first lottery pick since 2010 and played point guard at BYU, it was Traoré who found himself largely shouldering lead guard duties. 'It was just game flow. So whoever gets the ball, whoever is the closest is going to get it,' Traoré said. 'And we don't mind if it's me or him. We just play. 'I don't care who brings the ball up. We just want to play because, as you say, there's multiple guys who can handle the ball, so we don't care who. We just play through it.' Dariq Whitehead isn't playing in summer league. He told The Post it was the result of a discussion that his agents at Excel Sports had with general manager Sean Marks in an effort to get him through his injuries and 100 percent ready for the regular season. 'Absolutely, me coming to play, obviously at the end of last season I was getting ready to prepare for summer league,' Whitehead said. 'And then with the way I finished last season, it was just something that I guess my agent talked to Sean about and they were [thinking] more so get my body ready and prepare for training camp and next season.' The Nets renounced the free agent rights to Day'Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams, per Spotrac. They'll be re-signed, either both via cap space or one via the room exception. The Nets have $22.3 million in cap space and could create more by using the room exception, or waiving non-guaranteed players.
