Surf conditions declared dangerous at P.E.I. National Park Friday

Yahoo18-07-2025
Surf conditions in P.E.I. National Park are considered dangerous at the moment, Parks Canada warned in a social media post late Friday afternoon.
"To ensure visitor safety, entering the water is not recommended," the agency said in a news release, citing the danger from rip currents.
Those hazards form when waves break near the shoreline, piling up water between the breaking waves and the beach. Swimmers can become trapped in the rapid current and be swept offshore.
If you are caught in a rip current, it's recommended you stay calm, tread water and conserve energy while attracting attention.
Swimmers can also try to swim parallel to the shore until they are out of the current.
The best defence against a rip current is to stay on the beach.

Paradise Beaches Sit Empty as Indonesia Bets on Saturated Bali

At Ora Beach on Indonesia's Seram Island, framed by tropical vegetation and dramatic limestone cliffs, the waters are aquarium like and there's nary an influencer with smartphone in sight. It's a Maldives experience, for a fraction of the price. Some 1,600 kilometers (990 miles) away in Bali — not that there's any direct flight — traffic snarls around temple corners, the air is thick with noise pollution from motorbikes, plastic trash is matted into gutters and the surge of visitors has, in many places, eclipsed the island's deeper spiritual essence.

Alberta restaurants increase their sales; Canadian and U.S. tourists up

Restaurant sales in Alberta rose by 6.8 per cent in May from last year, according to Statistics Canada — and an economist says multiple factors explain the increase. Alberta isn't alone. Instead, the trend is consistent across Canada, and its most important driver is a push to buy local and ditch travel plans to the U.S. following President Donald Trump's threats of tariffs and annexation, says Siddhartha Bhattacharya, an economist with financial institution ATB, which is also a provincial crown corporation. Trump's rhetoric has prompted a decline in American air travel among Canadians. The number of Canadians returning to Calgary and Edmonton airports from the U.S. fell by 7.2 per cent in June from last year, while returns from Canadian destinations rose, according to ATB. 'They are definitely spending more locally in terms of travel,' Bhattacharya said. U.S. tourists to Canada increasing while more Canadians staying home The flow of American tourists, meanwhile, has only been rising. ATB's analysis shows that the number of Americans entering Canada via Alberta's airports has grown by more than 11 per cent. 'That's definitely boosting revenues,' Bhattacharya said. Also propelling the province's hospitality industry is population growth. Alberta swelled by more than 200,000 residents last year, and Bhattacharya said ATB projects more than 120,000 newcomers will have moved to the province by the end of this year. Despite the pressures on infrastructure, the pattern has proved favourable for certain industries. More people means more demand and more labour. Employment in the food and accommodation sector in the first half of this year was up by 4.9 from the same period in 2024. The trend is buffeted by a softer inflation, which fell from 5.9 per cent in 2023 to 3.6 per cent in 2024. However, higher revenues could also be a result of increased prices over the years. Alberta, however, isn't the province with the highest revenue gains in its hospitality sector. New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and Saskatchewan all boast a rise of eight per cent or more in proceeds from the previous year, although the numbers don't yet include the economic impact from hosting the G7 and the Rotary convention, which drew thousands of people to Alberta. Bhattacharya said geopolitical tensions have inevitably infiltrated the domestic markets in Canada, and so he expects a drop in consumer purchases over the next few months as the effects of tariffs begin to unfold. However, the restaurant industry may remain relatively unscathed. 'It's a healthy sign that dining out is on a relatively strong footing. And even for our future outlook . . . we don't expect a huge drop-off point or a turnaround in this sector,' Bhattacharya said.

Canadian Wildfire Smoke Prompts Air Quality Alerts Across the Great Lakes Region

Smoke from Canadian wildfires set off multiple air quality alerts on Thursday across the Midwest and the Canadian prairies, stretching eastward to Toronto. 'There's a pretty large swath of smoke actually over the central part of the country right now, and you can see that coming down from central Canada,' said Dave Radell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New York. The smoke is expected to remain over the northern and central Plains for the next couple of days, he said, adding that there was a chance it could drift toward the East Coast during the later part of the weekend and into early next week. In Canada, where fires have scorched millions of acres, air quality alerts were issued for multiple provinces, including parts of Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan. Every air quality monitor in Minnesota is reporting red or unhealthy conditions for everyone, said Matt Taraldsen, supervisory meteorologist at Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
