Askou on his 'deeper knowledge', attractive football & top-six aim

BBC News18-06-2025
New Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou has been speaking to the media for the first time since his appointment. Here are the key points:Motherwell's "new board and new ideas" were among the reasons for him being attracted to the job, along with the club's history and traditions. The Dane feels being the boss suits him best and that serving as assistant at his past two clubs - FC Copenhagen and Sparta Prague - has given him "a great experience to use in my next step as a manager". He adds: "I've got a deeper knowledge on things and how to implement them."He wants to play "dynamic football with players who want the ball and who want to take the initiative". Askou says his style of play with "big intensity" will be attractive to watch. The 42-year-old says it's too early to set targets, but sees no reason why the club can't reach the top six more often than they have done in recent years. He acknowledges it will take time to "stabilise the club" and they "need some time to get things in the right direction".Askou is looking forward to becoming reacquainted with Russell Martin (played with him at Norwich) and Jimmy Thelin (both managed in Sweden). He says he didn't speak to them about this move, but is keen to catch up with them. On Lennon Miller, Askou knows he's an exciting player and has heard all the transfer rumours, but as far as he's aware there is no news on his future. He hasn't yet met Miller.

The major hurdle in the way of Tottenham as they pursue Villa star after Eze debacle

Tottenham Hotspur have made Aston Villa 's Morgan Rogers a priority transfer target after missing out on Eberechi Eze. Aston Villa are reluctant to sell Rogers, who recently won PFA Young Player of the Year, but financial fair play constraints might make them consider a substantial offer. Rogers is expected to command a high transfer fee, potentially exceeding £80m, given his contract runs until 2030. Spurs are under increasing pressure to secure attacking players following James Maddison's injury and previous missed targets like Morgan Gibbs-White and Eze. The club is also pursuing other attacking options, including Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche and Southampton's Tyler Dibling, with Nico Paz of Como considered a more achievable transfer.

Arsenal edging closer to completing £60million move for Eberechi Eze

Eberechi Eze's £60million transfer from Crystal Palace to Arsenal could be confirmed as early as this weekend, the PA news agency understands. Eze is set to become Arsenal's seventh signing of the summer after they moved to hijack Tottenham's bid for the England international. It is believed the finishing touches on a deal to sign the 27-year-old, which catapults Arsenal's spending to beyond £250m, are all but completed. Eze's stunning move to the Emirates accelerated this week following a knee injury sustained by Kai Havertz. The Germany international came on as a second-half substitute in Arsenal's 1-0 win at Manchester United, and completed the game, but he did not participate in the club's open training session at the Emirates on Wednesday. It is unclear how long Havertz, who is still being assessed, will face on the sidelines. But the hastiness to swoop for Eze is evidence Arsenal did not want to take any chances as Mikel Arteta – backed by sporting director Andrea Berta – bids to lead the north Londoners to their first Premier League title in 22 years. Eze is now poised to follow striker Viktor Gyokeres (£55m), defender Cristhian Mosquera (£13m), midfielder Martin Zubimendi (£60m), goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m), midfielder Christian Norgaard (£10m) and forward Noni Madueke (£48.5m) in making the switch to the Emirates. Arteta will face the media at the club's training ground on Friday to preview his side's second match of the campaign, at home to Leeds on Saturday evening.

Alexa Stonehouse and Ash Gardner lead Trent Rockets to six-wicket win

Alexa Stonehouse and Ash Gardner led the way as Trent Rockets secured victory over Oval Invincibles in The Hundred. Defeat for the Rockets would have ended their hopes of reaching the knockouts but left-arm seamer Stonehouse set the tempo for a polished bowling performance with one for five from 15 deliveries. Australia all-rounder Gardner dismissed Marizanne Kapp and Meg Lanning within three deliveries, while fellow spinner Kirstie Gordon also claimed a couple of wickets as the Invincibles posted 109 for seven. The Rockets seemed poised for a routine win after racing to 51 for none in 35 balls but Bryony Smith's departure for 24 was followed by a rare failure for England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, out for two. Gardner (11) and Grace Scrivens (34) holed out as the Rockets lurched to 75 for four at the Kia Oval, but Jodi Grewcock (21 not out) and Heather Graham (19no) sealed a six-wicket win with 16 balls to spare. Both the Rockets and the Invincibles now sit on eight points but need to win their remaining two matches and hope results go in their favour elsewhere to finish in the top three of the group stage.
