
Are surging shark sightings and strandings linked to South Australia's toxic algal bloom?
Shark sightings and strandings are unusually high across South Australia amid a prolonged toxic algal bloom, but scientists say it's too soon to link to recent shark incidents.
On Thursday, a swimmer was bitten by a shark at Port Noarlunga beach, 30km south of Adelaide's CBD, one of a rising number of reported sharks swimming closer to shore – with some washing up dead on beaches.
On Tuesday angel sharks were reported dead on the Yorke peninsula, adding to the 200-plus marine species reported killed by a toxic algal bloom that has affected large parts of SA's coastline since March.

Scientists say it has been driven by a marine heatwave with water temperatures up to 2C hotter than usual. Such events have become more frequent and intense due to climate change, causing widespread damage to ecosystems and fish communities
In May, a 3-metre-long white shark died on Adelaide's Henley Beach, after locals found it struggling in shallow water. It was the fourth reported white shark stranding, with others found at Port Willunga, Ardrossan and Aldinga.
Charlie Huveneers, a professor at Flinders University and expert in shark ecology and their interactions with humans, said it was likely that the unusually high number of shark observations and stranding events was connected to biotoxins from the recent algal bloom.
'We will only be able to confirm this and understand which toxin might have led to these strandings once toxicology results come back,' he said.
But Huveneers warned that while it might be tempting to try to link increased activity to the risk of shark bites, tracking data showed white sharks occurred along the metropolitan coast throughout the year, regardless of algal blooms.
South Australia's Department of Primary Industries said while it was examining sharks and other marine life affected by the algal bloom, there was 'no scientific evidence before the government to indicate that the algal bloom might make a shark attack more likely'.
'Shark encounters have always been a small but real risk for anyone entering the ocean anywhere in the world,' a spokesperson for the department said.
'It is not uncommon for white sharks to utilise coastal waters in search of food, in particular juvenile and sub-adult white sharks who are primarily fish eaters. They use such near-shore areas to hunt for small sharks, rays and skates along with larger schooling fish species including salmon, mullet and snapper.'

In 2025, the state's marine environment has been affected by a combination of high water temperatures, lack of rain and the prolonged toxic algal bloom.
'There's been a lot of things going on, and we don't know currently what impacts that can have on things like shark behaviour,' said Dr Briana Le Busque, University of South Australia's environmental science program director.
More broadly, she said, people were seeing first-hand how species were affected by these major ecosystem changes. 'It's being talked about a lot,' she said.
Le Busque, a conservation psychologist who researches people's perceptions of sharks, said there had been a noticeable change in public attitudes as these events played out.
When the white shark washed up on Henley beach, the response from the public was noticeably different, she said. There was still fear, but also concern for the animal.
'Even before it washed up – it was sort of in the shallows – we saw lots of the general population trying to help a species that, a lot of the time, people don't necessarily like.'
The shark bite on Thursday followed a fatal shark incident in January on the state's west coast. While such incidents were 'absolutely horrible', Le Busque said, the number that have occurred in 2025 was currently aligned to the annual average.

How the seas could hold the key to climate change
Devon and Cornwall are at the global heart of finding sea-based solutions to climate change thanks to hundreds of scientists in the region, its universities have said. Their research has included restoring seagrass and oyster beds, looking into seaweed as a sustainable food source, and whether marine fungi can combat Martin Attrill, from the University of Plymouth, said scientists were working to understand our seas and how to protect them."When you look at Devon and Cornwall, and you add up everything we have, we're one of the global leads for marine science," he said. Common condition plaguing 1 in 6 Brits ‘increases the risk of deadly dementia'
FROM diabetes to high blood pressure, several health conditions have been linked to dementia over the years. And now there's new evidence for another one to be added to the list - as scientists have found depression increases the risk of the mind-robbing disease in both mid and later life. 1 Previous studies have shown that people with depression are more likely to develop dementia later in life. But there's been a lot of debate about when depression matters most, whether it's depression that starts in midlife - in your 40s or 50s, or depression that appears later in life - in your 60s or beyond. The new research, led by Jacob Brain and Maha Alshahrani from the Institute of Mental Health and School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham, University of Adelaide and the Dementia Centre of Excellence at Curtin University in Australia, brings together all the existing evidence and adds new analysis to examine this timing in more detail. Mr Brain said: "Our study shows that depression is linked to an increased risk of dementia in both midlife and late life. "This highlights the importance of recognising and treating depression across the life course, not just for mental health, but also as part of a broader strategy to protect brain health. "Public health efforts need to place greater emphasis on preventative brain health, including scaling up access to effective mental health care." The research team gathered and reviewed all the best available data from systematic reviews with meta-analyses (a statistical method that combines results from multiple studies to provide a more reliable overall estimate), that had already looked at the link between depression and dementia. They then went a step further by extracting and re-analysing data from the individual studies within those reviews, plus they added in newer studies that were missed in the earlier work. Mr Brain added: 'We specifically focused on the timing of when depression was measured, whether it was measured in midlife or in later life, and calculated how much it increased the risk of developing dementia. "This essentially allowed us to provide a more accurate and up-to-date picture of how depression at different life stages is linked to dementia risk.' There are many treatments available on the NHS to help with low mood and depression The potential links between depression and dementia are complex and may include chronic inflammation, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysregulation, vascular changes, alterations to neurotrophic factors and neurotransmitter imbalances. Shared genetic and behavioural related changes may also increase the risks. In Autumn 2022 it was found about 16 per cent of adults (around one in six) in Great Britain experienced moderate to severe depressive symptoms. Depression can also be a symptom of dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease, which can cause mood changes. The challenges of living with dementia, such as memory loss and difficulty with daily tasks, can also contribute to feelings of sadness and hopelessness. Dementia affects over 57 million people globally. There's currently no cure, so identifying and treating the factors to reduce the risk, such as depression, should be an important public health priority, stress the researchers. Depression can manifest in many ways. We all feel a bit low from time to time. But depression is persistent and can make a person feel helpless and unable to see a way through. They may also struggle to about daily life. This tiny Australian bat is the size of a matchbox. But it flies up to 150km a night in search of food
A tiny, critically endangered bat – roughly the size of a matchbox – can fly about 150km in a single night, new research has found. Southern bent-wing bats roost in caves in south-west Victoria and south-east South Australia. They fly out at night in search of food, eating about half their body weight in insects. Little is known about these foraging flights, so Victoria's Arthur Rylah Institute tracked bats from the Portland maternity cave 350km west of Melbourne, to see where they went. In summer-autumn, some bats flew from Portland to the Naracoorte maternity caves in South Australia or to Victoria's Warrnambool maternity caves – about 156km and 97km away, respectively – in a single night. The bats mostly returned on subsequent nights via a second direct, single-night flight. Those vast distances were 'pretty amazing for a bat that's less than the size of a mouse,' said wildlife ecology scientist Amanda Bush from the Arthur Rylah Institute. To put this in perspective, the average person commutes 16km to work in Australia, usually with the help of a vehicle. To collect the data, researchers fitted miniature GPS trackers on to 39 adult bats in September 2023 and another 69 trackers in February 2024. They managed to retrieve 47 trackers (and their onboard data) by re-trapping bats and searching cave floors for transmitters that had fallen off. The bats flew further from their roosts during summer-autumn, with an average nightly commute of 36km. They often headed inland, moving through forests and open farmland. Bats visited a wide range of habitats, including eucalypt and pine forests, roadsides, windbreaks, open farm land, coastal scrub and urban areas. The distances involved were 'incredible', said University of Melbourne bat expert, associate prof Lisa Godinho, who was not involved in the research. 'We know that their heart beats at about 1,000 beats-a-minute when they're flying,' she said. Southern bent-wing bats are 'quite adorable', Godinho said, measuring about 5cm long, with distinctive puffy brown fur and roundish heads. But while caves are critical to their survival, it is also important to understand what other parts of the landscape they rely on. Bat flights in spring were shorter, and focused on coastal areas. The largest distance recorded in spring was 78km from their roost, while the average was 12km. Shorter flights likely related to pregnant females, Godinho said. 'It's energetically so expensive to go a long way. If there's enough resources close to the maternity roost, then you would stay in that area.' In summer-autumn, the bats would bulk up before winter, when fewer insects were available, and the mammals relied on 'torpor' – dropping their body temperature and metabolic rate – to conserve energy. 'Realising that they travel this far through the landscape in order to find resources, raises the question – is that normal? Or has the fragmentation and degradation of the landscape meant that they are now having to travel that far in order to find what they need?' Godinho said. Southern bent-wing bats once numbered in the hundreds of thousands, but today there are fewer than 45,000. Protecting maternity sites and key foraging habitat has been identified as a priority action for the critically endangered species. Deakin University research fellow Dr Amanda Lo Cascio agreed the distances travelled were a 'long way for a little bat'. Lo Cascio said southern bent-wing bats were good flyers and flew quite fast, using sound – or echolocation – to navigate, similar to whales and dolphins. Knowing where and how far they travelled at night was especially important for assessing proposed developments in their flight paths and habitats, and considering the threats they might be exposed to, she said.
