Meta introduces Llama API to attract AI developers

Platforms on Tuesday announced an application programming interface in a bid to woo businesses to more easily build AI products using its Llama artificial-intelligence models.
Llama API, which was unveiled during the company's first-ever AI developer conference, will help Meta go up against APIs offered by rival model makers including Microsoft -backed OpenAI, Alphabet's Google and emerging low-cost alternatives such as China's DeepSeek.
"You can now start using Llama with one line of code," chief product officer Chris Cox said during a keynote speech onstage.
APIs allow software developers to customize and quickly integrate a piece of technology into their own products. For OpenAI, APIs constitute the firm's primary source of revenue.
Meta, which released the latest version of Llama earlier this month, did not share any pricing details for the API. In a press release, it said the new API was available as a limited preview for select customers and would roll out broadly in weeks to months. The company also released a standalone AI assistant app earlier on Tuesday. It plans to test a paid subscription service of its AI chatbot in the second quarter, Reuters reported in February.
Meta releases its Llama models largely free-of-charge for use by developers, a strategy CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously stated will pay off in the form of innovative products, less dependence on would-be competitors and greater engagement on the company's core social networks.
"You have full agency over these custom models, you control them in a way that's not possible with other offers," Manohar Paluri, a vice president of AI, said at the conference. "Whatever model you customize is yours to take wherever you want, not locked on our servers." DeepSeek, which has also released partly open-source AI models, sparked a stock selloff in January amid concerns over the high costs of AI development needed by top U.S. firms.
At the conference, Meta developers spoke about new techniques they used to significantly reduce costs and improve the efficiency of its newest Llama iteration. Zuckerberg welcomed increased competition that would steer the competitive ecosystem away from domination by a small number of leaders.
"If another model, like DeepSeek, is better at something, then now as developers you have the ability to take the best parts of the intelligence from the different models and produce exactly what you need, which I think is going to be very powerful," Zuckerberg said.

Google Gemini now supports scheduled actions, introduces new swipe gesture for Live
Google was one of the few companies that jumped on the AI bandwagon early on, but the tech giant still seems to be playing catch-up with startups like OpenAI. Earlier this year, in January, the Sam Altman-led company introduced a new feature that enabled users to schedule tasks in ChatGPT to run automated prompts. Now, in a blog post, Google has announced that it is bringing 'Scheduled Actions' to Gemini. Announced at this year's I/O, Google says the new functionality is 'designed to proactively handle your tasks.' Similar to ChatGPT's schedule tasks, Gemini users will now be able to streamline their routine tasks and even get personalised updates from the AI chatbot. The tech giant says users can now ask Gemini to do things like completing a task at a specified time, or changing the prompt you are already using for a recurring task. Moreover, Gemini can now show you a summary of your calendar, unread emails, and fetch information and give updates about your favourite sports team on the go. However, the scheduled actions feature is limited to users with a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription and eligible Google Workspace business and education plans. Also, it is still unclear if Gemini, like ChatGPT, has limited scheduled action to ten active tasks and if they can pause or delete an old task if they hit the limit. Google also said that Gemini will soon get an 'upgraded preview' of Gemini 2.5 Pro. The new large language model builds on the company's recently unveiled 2.5 Pro model, which is better than its predecessors in coding. The company is also making it easier for users to access Gemini Live. Instead of tapping on the dedicated Gemini Live action from the bottom of the screen, you can now simply swipe from the right side of the screen to the left to open Gemini Live.

AI University: State govt, NVIDIA Sign MoU
Vijayawada: The Government of Andhra Pradesh and NVIDIA have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly advance the establishment of a proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI) University and foster a robust AI ecosystem through skilling, research, infrastructure development and startup acceleration. This collaboration is aimed at positioning Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in AI-driven innovation and talent development. As part of this partnership, the two parties will work together to skill 10,000 engineering students across Andhra Pradesh over the next two years. NVIDIA will also provide curriculum guidance and technical training resources to support AI education and capacity building in engineering colleges across the State. In addition to workforce development, the MoU also focuses on enhancing research and development capabilities. NVIDIA will support the identification and establishment of AI research centres that will address pressing technological challenges and develop transformative solutions across sectors. Both parties will encourage joint research initiatives that contribute to the growth of AI knowledge and applications. Speaking on this occasion, IT Minister Nara Lokesh said, 'This partnership with NVIDIA marks a decisive step in our vision to position Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in artificial intelligence. By equipping 10,000 students with cutting-edge AI skills and supporting our startup ecosystem, we are laying the foundation for a future-ready economy driven by innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.' The collaboration will further extend to the development of cutting-edge computational infrastructure required for the proposed AI University. Google Gemini now capable of scheduling tasks like ChatGPT

With Scheduled Actions, you can instruct Gemini to carry out tasks on a recurring or timed basis, and it'll follow through without further prompting. After all, features like Smart Compose and Google Assistant routines eventually made their way to the masses — often at no extra short, Gemini's new scheduling ability is a meaningful step towards making AI more useful and less reactive. For busy professionals, students, and anyone juggling a million tabs — mental or otherwise — this update might just be the productivity nudge they've been waiting then, those lucky enough to get early access can enjoy Gemini acting like the most dependable colleague you've never had, one that never forgets, never complains, and doesn't even need a coffee break.
