High schooler Mason Howell wins U.S. Amateur, becomes youngest golfer to win event since 2009
Mason Howell was supposed to be prepping for the second week of his senior year at Brookwood School on Sunday. Instead, he was hoisting a prestigious golf trophy. Howell — a high schooler — took home the win at the U.S. Amateur in dominant fashion Sunday. In doing so, he became the youngest golfer to win the event since 2009 and the third-youngest golfer ever to take home the trophy. Byeong Hun An, who won the event at 17 years old in 2009 and Danny Lee, who picked up a win after just turning 18 in 2008, are the only two golfers younger than Howell to win the event. Howell's win knocked Tiger Woods down to fourth in the ranking. Woods won the U.S. Amateur at 18 years and seven months old in 1994. Howell is 18 years and one-and-half months old. It was an excellent performance by Howell, who defeated teenage golfer Jackson Herrington by a large margin, per the Associated Press. Howell won it with a par to halve the 30th hole, ending the most-lopsided final since Bryson DeChambeau also beat Derek Bard 7 and 6 in 2015. Howell's name might sound familiar to passionate golf fans. After shooting a 63-63 at the Atlanta sectional, he qualified for the U.S. Open in 2025. He didn't make the cut at the event, but it was an impressive performance for someone still in high school. The U.S. Amateur marked the first time since 2013 that two teenagers played in the final. Herrington, who finished second to Howell on Sunday, is 19. He'll start his sophomore year at the University of Tennessee soon. As for Howell, he'll celebrate the win by ... actually starting his senior year of high school. Brookwood School started its school year last week, when Howell was taking part in the tournament. He'll start the school year a little later than expected, but will have one heck of story to tell his classmates. Once he graduates, Howell is slated to attend the University of Georgia in 2026.

College football insider provides update on Colorado football quarterback battle
College sports analyst and On3 football insider Pete Nakos gave a breakdown of the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback competition and what he has been hearing coming out of Boulder. Nakos broke down what he's heard and expects from the Buffs on the QB front this upcoming season. "Deion Sanders and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur have been mum to this point on the ongoing quarterback battle between Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and true freshman Julian Lewis," Nakos wrote. "Salter is the more experienced of the two quarterbacks, playing in 30 career games. One source told On3 that they give the Liberty transfer the edge at this point to win the competition." While the senior Salter might be the frontrunner as we head into the final week of fall camp, Lewis is the future and still might have something to say about who starts Week 1. "[Salter's experience] does not mean Lewis is out of the picture," Nakos continued. "One source told On3 that it would not be surprised if Colorado employs some type of platoon situation with Lewis getting a few drives per game." The two-quarterback plan has been floated as an option during camp, and in theory, it makes sense, but it's often challenging to implement effectively. Although Salter seems likely to win the starting job, Lewis should see playing time at some point this year, regardless of whether the team adopts a two-quarterback system. The Buffaloes have just under two weeks to name a starting quarterback before they kick off their season against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on August 29 at 6 p.m. MT. Troy Franklin, Bucky Irving dominate in NFL Preseason Week 2 action
We are less than two weeks away from the start of the Oregon Ducks season against the Montana State Bobcats, but NFL action is already underway with Week 2 of the preseason, giving Oregon fans a chance to see some of their favorite Pro Ducks on the gridiron. Week 1 of the preseason gave us great looks at guys like Traeshon Holden, Bo Nix, Jamaree Caldwell, and Noah Sewell. In Week 2, some more famous Ducks got a chance to produce and get in on the action, with the likes of Troy Franklin, Bucky Irving, Tez Johnson, and Derrick Harmon dominating in their respective games. It also gave us our first look at quarterback Dillon Gabriel in a Cleveland Browns uniform, where he looked solid in his preseason debut. Whether it was an established player who received minimal reps or a young gun fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster, the former Ducks provided a lot to look at this weekend. Here's a glance at some of the standout performances. Troy Franklin — Denver Broncos Troy Franklin has been having an incredible training camp in Denver, and he showed that on Saturday night with four catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals. It left head coach Sean Payton declaring that Franklin's breakout season is underway, and he has high expectations for the former Duck going into 2025. Derrick Harmon — Pittsburgh Steelers As a first-round pick, there are high expectations for Derrick Harmon going into his rookie season on a dominant Pittsburgh defensive line, and he's proving himself early on, especially wit this bull rush through the Tamba Bay offense, getting home for a sack. Tez Johnson — Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tez Johnson has received a lot of positive buzz from his teammates throughout training camp, and he showed how dynamic he can be on the field, even with the special teams unit, as a punt returner on Saturday against the Steelers. Johnson also finished the day with four catches for 24 yards in the game. Dillon Gabriel — Cleveland Browns Dillon Gabriel had some highs and a couple of lows in his preseason debut with the Browns. His first drive was nearly perfect, with a lot of strikes over the middle and conversions on third downs, leading to a touchdown. However, he later threw a pick-six on a play where his receivers didn't help him out, and was credited with a fumble. Ultimately, he looked solid in the game, but he still has competition to win the starting spot.
