Sharjah Tower Fire: Owner And Manager Face Legal Action After Fatal Blaze
Legal action is being taken against the owner and manager of a Sharjah high-rise after a deadly fire exposed serious safety violations in the building, a top official told Gulf News.
The blaze, which broke out early Sunday morning in a 51-story residential tower, tragically claimed the lives of five residents — all of African nationality — who died while trying to escape the building and but fell to death.
The building, which includes 42 residential floors and nine levels of parking, housed six apartments per floor. Sharjah Civil Defence confirmed that 148 residents were successfully evacuated during the emergency.
According to Brigadier Sami Khamis Al Naqbi, Director General of Sharjah Civil Defence, the victims attempted to descend from the upper floors using ropes installed for ongoing repainting work. While one resident survived the descent, others lost their grip and fell. One victim landed on external scaffolding, which collapsed under the impact.
Investigation Continues
On Monday, residents were allowed to return to their homes, with the exception of those on the 42nd floor — where the fire originated. That floor remains sealed as forensic experts continue their investigation. The final report on the cause of the blaze is expected to be released soon.
Violations
Following a detailed inspection, officials uncovered multiple violations, including overcrowded shared living spaces and dangerously overloaded electrical systems — conditions suspected to have contributed to the fire.
'If the building manager and owner are found responsible for these breaches or for failing to meet safety standards, strict legal measures will follow,' Brigadier Al Naqbi said, noting that some offences may be referred to the judicial system for prosecution.
Before the incident, the building had previously been flagged for safety risks. Flammable cladding on the façade had been removed earlier as part of a Dh100 million government-led fire safety campaign. Officials believe this step helped contain the blaze and prevented an even greater disaster.
Fire safety campaign
Sharjah authorities have been actively replacing dangerous exterior materials on high-risk buildings. As part of the first phase, 20 of the 40 identified buildings have already undergone upgrades. In April 2023, 203 buildings were categorised as urgent cases, with a second phase targeting an additional 163 medium-risk structures — all over seven stories high.
The campaign involves replacing flammable panels with fire-resistant materials to minimise fire spread and provide emergency services with crucial response time.

Pahalgam Terror Attack: Dubai-Based Indian Expat Among Victims
An Indian expatriate in Dubai was among the 26 people killed in a terror attack in the Pahalgam area of India-administered Kashmir, on Tuesday, a family friend confirmed to Gulf News .Niraj Udhwani, a 33-year-old finance professional, was on a holiday with his wife Aayushi when gunmen opened fire in the popular tourist zone, Niraj's friend, who didn't want to be named, said. Niraj Udhwani He said the whole community is in shock. 'There were other friends also who travelled to India for the wedding. After the wedding, while most of their group returned, they (the couple) decided to spend a few days in Kashmir before flying back to Dubai. Everyone is so shocked and saddened after hearing this tragic news,' he added. When contacted, a spokesperson for Cognita Schools, said in a statement to Gulf News that the school community was 'deeply saddened' by the passing of Niraj. Describing him as 'a much-loved and respected member of the finance team,' the spokesperson said he was 'a dedicated and inspiring member of staff, and a kind, generous colleague.' 'Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time,' the spokesperson added. According to his LinkedIn profile, Niraj was a finance manager with the group. Prior to that, he worked for an investment and management group in the field of education and a couple of insurance companies. Hailing from Jaipur in Rajasthan, Niraj had been residing in Dubai since childhood, according to his family members in India. After his studies at The Indian High School Dubai, he graduated from the University of Rajasthan and went on to become an ACCA-qualified accountant. Indian newspapers quoted Niraj's uncles, who confirmed his death. 'He was supposed to return to Dubai from Kashmir this week after the vacation,' his uncle Prakash Udhwani told Hindustan Times . Another uncle, Bhagwan Das Udhwani, told The Indian Express that Niraj and Aayushi had married in February 2023 and had no children. Quoting Aayushi, Prakash said, she was in the hotel when the attack began and later discovered Niraj was among those killed. 'She heard some sounds of bullets and cries of people. She came out and realised some people had opened fire in the valley. When she was searching for her husband, the local police officials informed her at night that Niraj is dead,' said Prakash. Niraj's body is being transported to Jaipur via Delhi. The family has called for strict action against the perpetrators of the attack, reports said.'Those terrorists should be punished. The government should not leave them. We only want action against them. That would be the only justice to Niraj,' Prakash attack claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including tourists and a local pony handler. Several others were injured in the strike — one of the deadliest in recent years targeting civilians in the region.

Bahrain: Appeal Verdict Set for African Man Jailed for Robbing BD250
Judges are expected to hand down their verdict on 28 April in the appeal of an African man sentenced to three years in prison and deportation for robbing an Asian man of BD250 during what appeared to be a routine lift to a money exchange. The victim had accepted a ride from the accused, who was behind the wheel, along with another passenger whose identity remains unknown. But instead of stopping at the agreed destination, the driver turned behind a row of shops and brought the vehicle to a halt. The passenger stepped out. The driver then claimed he had come across a bundle of banknotes said to belong to the passenger, and told the victim to remain in the car and keep quiet until the man returned. When the victim asked to get out, the driver locked the door. A couple of minutes later, the passenger returned and sat back in his seat, claiming BD3,500 had gone missing. The driver kept silent and failed to mention the cash he had allegedly found. The victim stayed quiet, too, unsure of what was unfolding. The passenger searched the driver but found nothing, then turned to the man seated behind him. The driver then told the passenger the victim had taken the money. The passenger turned in his seat, clamped an arm across the victim's chest and gripped his shoulder. He rummaged through his pockets, reached round to the back of his trousers, and pulled out his wallet. The victim tried to resist but was punched in the forehead. BD250 was removed from the wallet, which was then stuffed back into his pocket. The driver handed over the earlier stash of money. The passenger opened the door and shoved the victim out onto the street without returning the stolen cash. The two men then drove off.
