Pahalgam Terror Attack: Dubai-Based Indian Expat Among Victims
An Indian expatriate in Dubai was among the 26 people killed in a terror attack in the Pahalgam area of India-administered Kashmir, on Tuesday, a family friend confirmed to Gulf News .Niraj Udhwani, a 33-year-old finance professional, was on a holiday with his wife Aayushi when gunmen opened fire in the popular tourist zone, Niraj's friend, who didn't want to be named, said. He said the whole community is in shock. 'There were other friends also who travelled to India for the wedding. After the wedding, while most of their group returned, they (the couple) decided to spend a few days in Kashmir before flying back to Dubai. Everyone is so shocked and saddened after hearing this tragic news,' he added.
When contacted, a spokesperson for Cognita Schools, said in a statement to Gulf News that the school community was 'deeply saddened' by the passing of Niraj.
Describing him as 'a much-loved and respected member of the finance team,' the spokesperson said he was 'a dedicated and inspiring member of staff, and a kind, generous colleague.'
'Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time,' the spokesperson added.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Niraj was a finance manager with the group. Prior to that, he worked for an investment and management group in the field of education and a couple of insurance companies.
Hailing from Jaipur in Rajasthan, Niraj had been residing in Dubai since childhood, according to his family members in India. After his studies at The Indian High School Dubai, he graduated from the University of Rajasthan and went on to become an ACCA-qualified accountant.
Indian newspapers quoted Niraj's uncles, who confirmed his death. 'He was supposed to return to Dubai from Kashmir this week after the vacation,' his uncle Prakash Udhwani told Hindustan Times .
Another uncle, Bhagwan Das Udhwani, told The Indian Express that Niraj and Aayushi had married in February 2023 and had no children.
Quoting Aayushi, Prakash said, she was in the hotel when the attack began and later discovered Niraj was among those killed. 'She heard some sounds of bullets and cries of people. She came out and realised some people had opened fire in the valley. When she was searching for her husband, the local police officials informed her at night that Niraj is dead,' said Prakash.
Niraj's body is being transported to Jaipur via Delhi. The family has called for strict action against the perpetrators of the attack, reports said.'Those terrorists should be punished. The government should not leave them. We only want action against them. That would be the only justice to Niraj,' Prakash said.The attack claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including tourists and a local pony handler. Several others were injured in the strike — one of the deadliest in recent years targeting civilians in the region.

Emirates, Air China to explore enhanced cooperation
Emirates and Air China have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a strategic framework for expanding their existing reciprocal interline cooperation. The signing took place on the sidelines of the 81st Annual General Meeting (IATA AGM) and World Air Transport Summit (WATS) in New Delhi, said a Wam news agency report. The MoU was signed by Adnan Kazim, Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer and Yan Fei, Air China's Senior Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer, accompanied by senior executives from both sides. Adnan Kazim said: 'Our partnership with Air China commenced 26 years ago, and approximately 18,000 Emirates customers have benefited from the expanded connectivity offered through our interline agreement. "Building on this success, we've recently announced the launch of two new Chinese cities—Shenzhen and Hangzhou—which will strengthen our East Asia operations." Yan Fei said, 'Air China highly values the cooperation with Emirates. The signing of this memorandum is an important milestone for the deepening of the cooperation between the two sides." Under the MoU, Emirates and Air China will explore a reciprocal codeshare on select routes across each other's networks. This would allow each airline to place its code on the other's flights on China-UAE trunk routes as well as beyond Beijing and Dubai to an expanded list of points. Emirates and Air China will also develop a framework for cooperation across cargo operations and respective frequent flyer loyalty programme, enhancing their value proposition for both travellers and businesses. To further ensure seamless connectivity for customers, the two carriers will explore coordinating flight schedules or adjusting minimum connecting times. Once activated, customers of both airlines will benefit from a seamless booking process, single ticket itineraries and wider lounge access to new and exciting destinations. Beyond commercial cooperation, both carriers plan to exchange best practices in areas such as revenue management, data analytics, digitalisation, brand management and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), among others, through joint knowledge sharing and familiarisation visits. From July 30, Emirates will operate 49 weekly flights to the Chinese mainland, including double daily services to Beijing and Shanghai as well as daily flights to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou.

Snakes on a plane: Indian smuggler caught with venomous vipers
A passenger smuggling dozens of venomous vipers was stopped after flying into the financial capital Mumbai from Thailand, Indian customs officials said. The snakes, which included 44 Indonesian pit vipers, were 'concealed in checkedin baggage', Mumbai Customs said in a statement late Sunday. 'An Indian national arriving from Thailand was arrested,' it added. The passenger, details of whom were not released, also had three Spider-tailed horned vipers -- which are venomous, but usually only target small prey such as birds -- as well as five Asian leaf turtles. Mumbai Customs issued photographs of the seized snakes, including blue and yellow reptiles squirming in a bucket. The snakes are a relatively unusual seizure in Mumbai, with customs officers more regularly posting pictures of hauls of smuggled gold, cash, cannabis or pills of suspected cocaine swallowed by passengers. However, in February, customs officials at Mumbai airport also stopped a smuggler with five Siamang gibbons, a small ape native to the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Those small creatures, listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, were 'ingeniously concealed' in a plastic crate placed inside the passenger's trolley bag, customs officers said.
