Indian PM Modi says had ‘good' conversation with Putin
'Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine,' Modi posted on social media. 'I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year.'
The telephone call between the two leaders came after US President Donald Trump imposed punishing tariffs on India.
Trump on Wednesday announced he would double levies on Indian goods to 50 percent over New Delhi's purchasing of Russian oil, a key revenue source for Moscow's war in Ukraine.
A first salvo of 25 percent tariffs on Indian goods took effect on Thursday, with the additional 25 percent set to apply in three weeks.
Buying Russian oil saved India billions of dollars on import costs, keeping domestic fuel prices relatively stable.
Russia is also one of India's top arms suppliers and the warm ties between the two countries date back to the Soviet era.
The Kremlin has slammed calls to 'force countries to sever trading relations' with Russia as 'illegitimate', without directly mentioning Trump.
On Thursday, Putin met India's national security advisor Ajit Doval in Moscow.
The Kremlin has also said that a summit on Ukraine between Trump and Putin was set for the 'coming days'.

Ukraine won't surrender land to Russia to buy peace, President Volodymyr Zelensky warned yesterday, after Washington and Moscow agreed to hold a summit in a bid to end the war. Presidents Vladimir Put i n and Donald Trump will meet in the US state of Alaska on August 15, to try to resolve the three-year conflict, despite warnings from Ukraine and Europe that Kyiv must be part of negotiations. Announcing the summit on Friday, Trump said that "there'll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both" Ukraine and Russia, without providing further details. "Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier," Zelensky said on social media hours later. "Any decisions against us, any decisions without Ukraine, are also decisions against peace. They will achieve nothing," he said, adding that the war "cannot be ended without us, without Ukraine". Zelensky also urged Ukraine's allies to take "clear steps" towards achieving a sustainable peace, during a call with Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer. National security advisors from Kyiv's allies -- including the United States, EU nations and the UK -- were gathering in Britain on Saturday to align their views ahead of the Putin-Trump summit. "It is truly important that the Russians do not succeed in deceiving anyone again," Zelensky said after a call with French President Emmanuel Macron, without elaborating further. Three rounds of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine this year have failed to bear fruit, and it remains unclear whether a summit could bring peace any closer as the warring sides' positions are still far apart. Putin has resisted multiple calls from the United States, Europe and Kyiv for a ceasefire. Zelensky said Kyiv was "ready for real decisions that can bring peace" but said it should be a "dignified peace", without giving details. Putin, a former KGB officer in power in Russia for over 25 years, has ruled out holding talks with Zelensky at this stage. Hamas has warned Israel that it is 'sacrificing' hostages with its newly approved plans to takeover and occupy Gaza City, and the whole of the strip. The militant jihadist group called Netanyahu's plans a 'war crime' and highlighted that Israel's careful use of the term 'control' instead of 'occupation' an attempt to whitewash the truth, and 'to evade its legal responsibility for the consequences of its brutal crime against civilians.' But it's believed maybe just a dozen or more hostages are still alive – according to recent statements of Israeli officials. Hamas recently featured a propaganda video of a still living hostage 'digging his own grave' in the tunnels under the Gaza Strip. 'They realize that expanding the aggression means sacrificing them,' the new Hamas statement said. This isn't the first time that Hamas has warned more hostages could die as a result of Israeli actions. Amid conflicting reports, the militant group has in the past claimed that Israel's own air and artillery strikes have killed and wounded some of the hostages. Local as well as international reports say the scale of the new military offensive will require many thousands more reservists: In a meeting of the security cabinet that lasted 10 hours, ministers approved proposals for the 'takeover of Gaza City', which is likely to be the first phase for the Israeli military to assume full control of Gaza, as Netanyahu says it is his intention. A statement released by his office did not use the word 'occupation' but, effectively, that is what the plans mean. It is not clear when the operations, which could take months, will start, as the military will have to call up thousands of reservists, exhausted after serving multiple times, and allow for the forced evacuation of residents from an area where around 800,000 Palestinians live. Israel in its conquest and 'control' efforts will be overseeing a largely starving Palestinian population, with most of them having long been internally displaced.
