Charlotte Higgins on The Archers: it's all kicking off in Ambridge

The Guardian01-04-2025
A miasma hangs over Ambridge; an enchantment of sorts. Its inhabitants seem bizarrely foggy about events in the outside world. For example, the word Palestine cannot be spoken in the village. The Malik family have been saying a few prayers during iftar, among which 'Let it stop soon,' is the nearest anyone has come to mentioning The Situation. They have now moved back to their house on the recently sewage-engulfed Beechwood estate – departing their temporary accommodation at the Ambridge Hall B&B perhaps just before the well-meaning joining-in-with-Ramadan by Lynda Snell (MBE) got oppressive. The Snells, on the other hand, are missing the Maliks so much that Constanza upped and died (she's a llama).
Ah, the sewage. Aside from its olfactory effects, the longer-term consequences continue. No one wants to eat cheese or yoghurt artisanally produced amid human excrement, remarkably, so Helen Archer's organic dairy business is in trouble. The plan is to make one of Clarrie Grundy or Susan Carter redundant, a typically humane move from the Bridge Farm Archers. The threatened job loss has only strengthened Emma Grundy's resolve to campaign against the evils of Borchester Water. She and Pat Archer turned up at a demo dressed as giant bog rolls, and soon, a plan for a bellringing protest at St Stephen's church was hatched. Alan Franks, at his trendy vicar best, loved the idea, and a 10-hour campanological marathon, plus an outburst of citizen handbell ringing, was devised. Not everyone was delighted. Martyn Gibson, twirling his moustache and swirling his evil capitalist's cloak, swept into the church on the verge of an apoplexy. The bells rang out, nonetheless.
A copy of the Guardian must have been smuggled into George Grundy's prison, because he made rather a chilling joke about maths prodigy Brad Horrobin becoming his financial accomplice just as soon as he sets up a family crime cartel – a future for Brad that was fearfully mooted by this column back in November. At any rate, when Brad confessed that he could no longer keep George's video business alive, the young inmate didn't seem to care – strongly suggesting that an alternative, and I'll warrant nefarious, business idea has taken root. I would hate to think of dear Brad morphing into Stringer Bell, but stranger things have happened.
This is the last A Month in Ambridge for a while. I'll be back in the autumn. In the meantime I'll be writing a book, and spending much of my time in Ukraine. I'll keep listening, of course. In Ambridge, the agricultural year will roll on: the sheep will still need shearing, the harvest collecting and Natasha's stilettos polishing, even when the rest of the world teeters on the edge.

Myleene Klass's ex responds to cheating claims

Myleene Klass's ex-husband has hit back at claims that he cheated on her. The 47-year-old musician, presenter and model recently warned those who 'have reason to' be afraid, following claims her ex-husband cheated on her with a well-known female celebrity. Klass was married for two years to her Irish bodyguard Graham Quinn, initially meeting in 2001, marrying in 2011, and divorcing two years later in 2013. Speaking about their relationship, she revealed that she caught him about to sleep with a 'famous person' while in her own home for her birthday. Now, however, Graham, with whom she shares two daughters, has clapped back at Klass. According to those close to him, a source told Daily Mail: 'He thinks she's a bully. 'They believe it was especially 'vindictive and calculated' of Myleene to launch the bombshell broadside on what she would have known was the week of Graham's 51st birthday.' In a previous chat with Fathers4Justice, Graham was also found to have said that Klass 'actively denied' him access to his two kids. He told how he felt that he was 'banging his head against a brick wall' in his attempts for access. saying: 'I haven't seen my kids in years. 'The only exception is when Myleene begrudgingly met me in a car park off the North Circular Road in 2014. 'She lowered the window about three inches and I could see the girls in the back. That was it. 'I've thrown so much more money at it [trying to see his daughters] and I can't afford much more. 'I've spent £20,000 and am probably further away from them now than I've ever been. I've missed so many birthdays and Christmas days. I'll never get that back.' Throughout this ordeal, Klass has declined to name the woman involved at the time. But earlier this week, the presenter took to Instagram with what appears to be a veiled warning to those 'who probably have reason to' be afraid, declaring she 'won't keep her mouth shut' and has 'receipts.' Alongside a photograph of her recently awarded MBE – for services to women's health, miscarriage awareness, and charity – Klass shared a heartfelt message with her followers. More Trending 'Wow. What a week it's been!' she wrote. 'Firstly, thank you. I have quite literally tens of thousands of messages of love and support for me and my family. I took a long time to learn there's strength in vulnerability.' She added: 'At 47, I've finally found my voice and it's clear, unapologetic and brutally honest.' 'To those that fear its truth, you probably have reason to. I have receipts. To those that need to hear it, I've got you—and I fully intend to continue using it to change the laws and legislation that neglect women and children in this country and around the world.' Georgia Harrison slams Nigel Farage's pledge as 'most ridiculous' thing society could imagine

Georgia Harrison has said Nigel Farage's pledge to scrap the UK's online safety laws would be 'the most ridiculous, damaging thing that society could ever imagine' Georgia Harrison has said scrapping the UK's online safety laws would be 'the most ridiculous, damaging thing that society could ever imagine'. ‌ The reality TV star, who campaigns on women's rights after being a victim of revenge porn, made the comment after Nigel Farage pledged to ditch the Online Safety Act . ‌ She said she believes social media is 'massively influencing the issues of violence against women and girls, the rise in misogyny'. It comes after a Reform UK police chief's 'dark heart of wokeness' claim came under fire. ‌ ‌ 'I think social media is massively influencing the issues of violence against women and girls, the rise in misogyny," she said. "There has always been violence against women and girls but it was always learned in a household often if you saw it yourself, or unfortunately, you were someone who was brought up in a not very nice way. 'Now it's learned by people who are actually brought up in really nice homes online, and these young men are going down a path that they never would have if they hadn't started looking up to these role models, who, in fact, are actually just monetising off of really just warping the minds of young people.' Asked what she made of Mr Farage's pledge to scrap online safety laws in the UK, the Love Island star said: 'I think to scrap the Online Safety Act would be the most ridiculous, damaging thing that society could ever imagine. It's so important. ‌ 'Like the younger generation are spending so much more time on their phones than they are in reality. Like their reality is virtual reality, so it needs to be policed. It needs to be regulated. If anything, I think the laws need to be strengthened.' Ms Harrison, who is pregnant with her first child, added: 'I wouldn't want to bring my kid up in a world where the internet isn't regulated. It would genuinely scare the life out of me.' ‌ The sexual abuse campaigner was awarded an MBE for her campaigning work on violence against women and girls, and her work on the Online Safety Act, in June. She has fought for more action on intimate image abuse and deepfakes after her ex-partner Stephen Bear uploaded footage of her without her consent. He was jailed for 21 months in 2023. In September, Labour announced new changes to the law to force tech firms to clamp down on the sharing of non-consensual intimate images on their platforms. The offence of sharing intimate images without consent will be classified as the most serious type of online offences under the Online Safety Act, meaning platforms will now have to take steps to proactively remove this material, as well as prevent it from appearing in the first place.
