BPIA writes to civic body on high mast light obstructing flights' path

Bhubaneswar: Biju Patnaik International Airport's (BPIA) authorities have drawn the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation's (BMC) attention to a high mast light in Jagamara that has been identified as an obstruction along flights' approach path.
In a letter to BMC, airport officials stated that no one from the civic body obtained clearance (NOC) from them before installing the light.
"There are some street electric poles (used and unused) and a high mast light along runway 14 (Baramunda side) which need to be shortened by at least five metres to clear the obstruction. Going by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (Height Restrictions for Safeguarding of Aircraft Operations) Rules, 2015, it is necessary to remove or trim trees, light poles and buildings on the approach path of runways 14 and 32," BPIA's director Prasanna Pradhan stated in the letter, which was sent to BMC to July 11.

The safety inspection team at the airport identified the high mast light as an obstruction. Previously, a joint inspection team, which included representatives from the general administration department, Airports Authority of India, BMC, Bhubaneswar Development Authority and the revenue department, also found some obstructions and took pictures," airport director Prasanna Pradhan told TOI on Tuesday.
Rakesh Sahoo, BMC junior engineer (electrical), said, 'Whether there was clearance for the pole to be erected along the landing path is under verification."

BPIA has been emphasising the need to cut trees, demolish unauthorised buildings and trim tall trees on the land of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), in addition to addressing the high mast light issue.
Earlier, BPIA authorities had sought BMC's help in cutting down three coconut trees of Nilakantheswar temple which had posed obstruction to a plane's approach. Last month in the aftermath of the Air India plane crash in Gujarat, the civic body cut down the trees.

PMC aims to install water meters for 24x7 supply scheme in 1 month
Pune: The civic administration has set itself a September deadline to finish installing water meters under the 24x7 equitable supply project. 'About 70% of meters have been installed so far. We are targeting 100% installation by next month,' officials from PMC's water supply department said. Of the 2.63 lakh meters to be installed across the city, PMC has set up 1.85 lakh so far. About 77,000 meters remain to be installed, mostly, officials said, because of citizens' non-cooperation. Despite repeated appeals, there has been opposition by some citizens. Those opposing the fixing of meters will face action,' the officials said. Vadodara: Twenty-three days after the Gambhira bridge over the Mahi river collapsed, killing 21 people, the tanker precariously hanging off the broken slab is about to be extricated, with its front to be lifted with high-pressure air bags. On Friday, the operation to salvage the tanker was launched. After directives from chief minister Bhupendra Patel, the Anand district administration roped in the Porbandar-based Marine Emergency Response Centre (MERC), which in turn called in experts from Singapore. MERC was recently engaged by the Coast Guard to salvage the Singapore-flagged container vessel Wan Hai 503, which had caught fire off the coast of Kozhikode in Kerala on June 8 while en route from Colombo to Mumbai with more than 800 tonnes of a hazardous mix of industrial chemicals. Sources said the CM has emphasized that the operation be carried out with "zero incident". They added that MERC is carrying out this operation pro bono. When the bridge collapsed, the tanker driver jumped out and managed to clamber onto a stable part of the bridge. He saw many vehicles and people plunging into the river. The tanker belongs to Shivam Roadlines in Ankleshwar. Its owner has made representations for speedy recovery of his vehicle, for which he pays a monthly EMI of about Rs 1 lakh. "I have spoken to the state-level bankers committee requesting that his EMIs be deferred for four months," said Chaudhary.
