Common fitness mistakes and how to avoid them, according to gym coaches

GMA Network18-06-2025

When it comes to fitness, you can always begin again. You may stumble in consistency once in a while, but you can always come back and pick up where you left off.
But whether you're stepping into the gym for the first time or returning after a break, there are common mistakes to watch out for.
In this exclusive GMA News Online article, fitness coaches Justin Hernandez and Antonio Sietereales give a rundown of common mistakes to avoid when working out and tips to make your workouts at the gym effective.
Picture this: It's your first day at the gym, and you want to make the most of it. After all, gym memberships don't come cheap. So, you try to use as many machines and pieces of equipment as you can.
But what are the things to be mindful of when building a fitness routine?
Wrong form
According to Hernandez, the first Filipino male CrossFit Games athlete and head coach at Gold's Gym powered by Metcon at Venice Grand Canal Mall, one of the most common mistakes people make at the gym is doing too much too soon and pushing themselves too hard, too fast.
One thing to remember for a routine to be effective is to be mindful of your proper form.
"Proper form is always our top priority," Hernandez said. "The better your form, the more effective your results will be, and it helps keep you injury-free."
Once you've mastered proper form, the next step is to maintain it consistently with every rep before eventually adding intensity.
"Even the simplest exercises, like push-ups, squats, and planks, are often mis-performed because people don't give [proper form] enough attention," he said.
He also said that mindset plays a crucial role in building a sustainable fitness routine.
"Getting fit isn't easy, so having the right mindset is key," he said. "Your mindset, your 'why' helps you stay consistent, especially when motivation fades or challenges arise."
Rushing
Meanwhile, Coach Sietereales reminds beginners that when it comes to fitness, "slow is fast."
"Think of your body like a plant and training as watering it," he said. "If you're a small plant, giving too much water (training) will drown it. Start small and grow gradually."
Sietereales also echoed the critical roles that nutrition, sleep, and recovery play in developing progress.
"Fitness is 30% training, 40% nutrition, and 30% sleep," he said.
While the 30-40-30 formula offers a simplified way to look at the key pillars of fitness, the exact formula varies from one person to another, depending on one's individual goals and needs.
"Make sure you're consistently checking all those boxes. If you are, progress will follow," he said.
According to Sietereales, no matter how hard you train, progress won't happen without proper nutrition and adequate recovery.
"People forget that muscle growth is triggered in the gym but actually happens during rest," he said.
He added that signs of overtraining include persistent soreness, fatigue, and even a sense of dread before workouts.
Crash dieting
If your goal at the gym is to lose weight and build muscle, Hernandez said following diet fads while trying to build a workout routine isn't the way to go.
In fact, a 2013 study revealed that very low-calorie diets can increase one's risk of gallstones.
Moreover, according to a 2021 "Pinoy MD" episode, those who follow a diet that omits a certain food group may suffer from nutrient deficiency.
"When trying to lose weight, a common mistake is crash dieting, such as cutting calories too drastically," Hernandez said. "This leads to not just fat loss but also muscle loss, which slows your metabolism."
Hernandez also said that there is no shortcut to building muscles.
"When people try to build muscle too quickly, they often lift too heavy and risk injury," he said, adding that overeating isn't the answer either, as it can lead to unwanted fat gain.
"Realistically, the body can only build about two pounds of muscle per month, so the key is to go slow and steady," he added.

NBA: Who is Maria Pizarro, the mother of Fil-Am player Dylan Harper?

Dylan Harper, the second overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft Class, has lived his whole life with basketball. After all, he is the son of five-time NBA champion Ron Harper and basketball coach Maria Pizarro, who Dylan credits for his growth in the sport. 'My mom. I mean my mom coached me from first grade to senior high school so definitely her,' Dylan said in an interview. READ MORE | Family matters: How close ties helped Fil-Am Dylan Harper shape his young career Dylan's Filipino roots are from his mom Maria who migrated to the United States at the age of seven. According to Springfield Community College student publication The Springfield Student, Maria played in the NCAA Division I with the University of New Orleans before she found her way to coaching. 'Always being passionate about the sports I played, I wanted to continue being involved in the game (specifically basketball) as an adult,' Maria told The Springfield Student. 'Coaching was the natural progression for me to stay connected to the game I love.' Dylan, meanwhile, is just happy that he continues to fulfill his dreams with his mother beside him. 'For her to see this moment and just be there for my journey and see all the good and the bad. This probably means the world to her as much it means to me. I love my mom. Everything I do, it's definitely for her," Harper said. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Family matters: How close ties helped Fil-Am Dylan Harper shape his young career

Jun 25, 2025; Dylan Harper stands with NBA commissioner Adam Silver after being selected as the second pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2025 NBA Draft. (Brad Penner-Imagn Images/REUTERS) NEW YORK — The San Antonio Spurs might be headed back to their winning ways after drafting Filipino-American player Dylan Harper at number 2 in this year's NBA Draft. Harper, the highest-picked draftee from Rutgers University, averaged an impressive 19 points per game in his only collegiate campaign, making the decision easier for San Antonio executives. But more than a promising young core, Dylan looks forward to the concept of family and culture in one of the most-respected sports organizations in the world. After all, his basketball career, so far, has been characterized by strong familial bonds amongst his peers. 'I think all my life has been 'how I go somewhere, make something happen' and obviously get to the championship. With that young group, they're headed in the right direction. Great everything, man. From the front office to the equipment manager to the video guy. They're all around great. The culture over there is great. I'm just happy to be part of it now," said Harper. Growing up, it is easy to deduce that he got his basketball influence from his dad, 5-time NBA champion Ron Harper. It is, of course, correct, but not quite the entire picture. 'My mom. I mean my mom coached me from first grade to senior high school so definitely her,' Dylan talked about his mom's impact on his basketball journey. Filipina Maria Pizarro Harper has been guiding her kids since they first started dribbling a basketball. Her resume is also quite impressive. She played Division 1 basketball for the University of New Orleans in the '90s, a time when Asians had difficulty breaking into the sport in the United States. After her stint, she transitioned to coaching, which has been her profession for the past three decades. Her guidance led to her kids reaching the game's premiere stage. Ron Harper Jr., the eldest of two sons, plays for the Detroit Pistons, while Dylan will start his professional career with the Spurs. 'For her to see this moment and just be there for my journey and see all the good and the bad. This probably means the world to her as much it means to me. I love my mom. Everything I do, it's definitely for her," Harper said. 'My mom always tells me keep the main thing, the main thing. Basically, go worry about basketball, let me take care of the rest. That really stuck with me 'cause it allowed me to work on my craft, work on the things that really matter.' 'I mean, it means everything to me. It means the world, I think. My family's been there for me through thick and thin. Times got rough. To have them here supporting me, either from the table, from the stands. I appreciate them and I truly love each and every one of them.' His strong family ties led to the decision to stay home for college, committing to Rutgers in his hometown in New Jersey. He teamed up with fellow five-star recruit Ace Bailey, who happens to be part of his close circle. The two have been good friends for a few years already before teaming up. This off-court chemistry translated on the court as they provided the Scarlet Knights' one-two combo this past season. 'Just for me and Ace, I think we developed a lot because from the beginning of the season to the end of the season, you can see us really develop, how our game grew and more mature. It felt great because Ace, that's like my best friend. Me and him have been tight for 4-5 years so just being able to play on the same court with him, it was special,' Harper said. Both will stay in the same conference, but will be playing for different teams as Bailey will look to fulfill his potential as a member of the Utah Jazz. 'I love that man, I'm so happy for him. Sky's the limit for him. Utah got a great guy, great prospect and a great family guy who's going to take care of the next person," Harper said of Bailey. The lefty guard looks to build rapport with his new teammates and, arguably, one of the best set of young players in the country; including the last two rookie of the year winners Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle and a veteran star guard in De'Aaron Fox. 'I mean really all the guys. I think Stephon Castle is a big one. Obviously excited for Wemby. So Stephon Castle, De'Aaron Fox. When you play with such good players, it just elevates your game. And when you got that many ballhandlers on the court, it makes the game so much easier for everyone else.' He said of his new teammates. Harper, for the first time in his young career, will be away from home. That's part of the challenge he plans to overcome heading to the biggest chapter of his life. 'Excited, honestly. I'm gonna take it with grace. And I'm also gonna be happy where I end up at.' —JKC, GMA Integrated News

New to Pilates? Everything a first-timer needs to know

Pilates is one of the physical activities that has increasingly gained popularity over the years. It can be practiced using a reformer machine or simply on the mat. Reformer Pilates uses a special machine with springs, ropes, and pulleys to help improve strength and flexibility. The machine's resistance allows the body to move in different ways for a more effective workout. On the other hand, Mat Pilates can be performed without equipment, solely relying on bodyweight and resistance exercises on the mat. Previously, we tackled the common mistakes usually made in the gym, and in this GMA News Online exclusive, we turn our focus on Pilates to give you a beginner's guide for a safe and effective workout. The importance of proper form and breath Understanding the importance of proper form and breath is crucial for a successful Pilates practice. These fundamental aspects not only enhance the effectiveness of your workout but also ensure your safety. According to Angelyn Mae Santos, ONELIFE's lead clinical trainer and licensed physical therapist, one of the most common mistakes that beginners make is holding their breath to concentrate on a certain movement. "Proper breathing plays a key role in movement efficiency, core activation, and overall support," Santos said, adding that breathing is especially important for women recovering from postpartum or managing postural shifts. Meanwhile, another crucial mistake in practicing Pilates is doing it in the wrong form. Santos said proper form is the "foundation of Pilates," ensuring that the right muscles work to prevent injury. "When alignment is off, not only does the effectiveness of an exercise drop, but it can also create strain in areas like the neck, spine, or joints," she said. At ONELIFE, a Reformer Pilates class is done in a 1-on-1 session to ensure the proper form of one's practitioner is implemented throughout each session. Don't rush for results As with any physical activity, there is no such thing as a shortcut to seeing results in Pilates. Santos said rushing yourself to achieve results by going for too much intensity diminishes the effectiveness of an exercise and increases the risk of injury. "We prioritize precision and control over speed," she said. "It's not about how quickly you can get through a workout, but how well you move." "We often remind clients that going slower and tuning in leads to better results and safer progress," she added. Santos also emphasized how some newcomers are influenced by "social media trends or unrealistic expectations." They are often tempted to try advanced movements before building the necessary foundational strength. "True strength is built from the inside out," the coach said. "A foundational approach, supported by expert guidance, ensures that each movement is both safe and effective over time." Mindset matters in body transformation Pilates is not just a weight loss workout. It's about building strength, improving posture, and activating the deep stabilizing muscles that often get overlooked in high-intensity workouts. Santos said a common misconception about Pilates is that it's too gentle to transform the body, "but when done correctly, with focus and form, even the most basic movements can be incredibly challenging." "In reality, Pilates meets you where you are," she said. "You build strength from the inside out, and that's where the most meaningful tone and transformation begin." When doing Pilates or any other physical activity, mindset is everything. But compared to fast, performance-based workouts, Pilates is about moving intentionally. "Progress in Pilates can be subtle. It might show up as improved posture, fewer aches, or deeper breathing," Santos said. "Without the right mindset, those wins can go unnoticed." "That's why we encourage clients to approach their practice with curiosity rather than pressure," she added, saying that when clients let go of the need to be "perfect," the progress becomes faster. Don't disregard rest and proper nutrition Rest, recovery, sleep, and nutrition are all crucial components of a sustainable and effective fitness regimen. Without these, your energy may dip, and progress can stall, even with consistent practice. "The body still needs time to recover and rebuild even with mindful movement," Santos said. "Overtraining in Pilates can show up as fatigue, compromised form, or even tension in areas like the neck or lower back," she added. Getting enough hours of sleep is also vital in muscle repair and supports the mental focus needed for Pilates. As for proper nutrition, Santos recommends consuming adequate protein and essential nutrients daily to fuel the body for both movement and recovery.
