Muscat – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has launched a meteorite corner at Mandarin Oriental, Muscat as part of its strategy to harness the sultanate's geological heritage and enhance the cultural and tourism experience for visitors.
The corner features a collection of rare meteorite samples discovered in Oman's Jiddat al Harasis desert, offering hotel guests a chance to closely view and learn about their scientific significance, historical context and the country's efforts to preserve these under the Cultural Heritage Law.
Among the highlights is a sample from Jiddat al Harasis 91, the largest documented meteorite fall in Oman. The fall's path spans 52km, with over 700 pieces collected, weighing a total of approximately 4,600kg. Scientific studies date the fall to more than 12,600 years ago.
Also on display is a sample from Jiddat al Harasis 73, classified as a stony chondrite meteorite of the L6 type. Considered the second largest meteorite fall discovered in Oman, this specimen is estimated to have fallen 15,600 years ago during the Paleolithic period. It had a scattering path extending 25.8km, with 3,638 pieces recorded, totalling 620.9kg.
The meteorite corner aims to introduce local and international visitors to the importance of meteorites in understanding the formation of the solar system. It also highlights the scientific and cultural value of these finds and the regulatory frameworks that govern their study and preservation in Oman.

Sunshine draws tourists to Dhofar's waterfalls, heritage sites

SALALAH: After weeks of heavy monsoon rainfall, clear skies returned to Dhofar last week, revealing a breathtaking green carpet stretched across the governorate's mountains and plains. The sunshine, which broke through from the beginning of last week continued throughout the week, drawing large crowds to Dhofar's natural wonders and heritage sites. One of the most anticipated sights was the reappearance of waterfalls at Ayn Korr, a popular natural spring in Salalah. These seasonal cascades typically begin flowing in mid-August as rain-fed groundwater levels rise — marking the peak of the Khareef Dhofar Season. 'The view today is absolutely stunning', said an Omani visitor. 'Just a few days ago, the area was blanketed in heavy fog. Now, the green mountains and blue skies are like something out of a dream — especially for those of us living in the Gulf'. Tourists from across the region have been arriving in growing numbers, drawn by Dhofar's unique monsoon climate, which offers a refreshing escape from the intense summer heat elsewhere in the GCC. 'I've lived in the Gulf for nearly a decade', said an Indian tourist based in the UAE. 'But I never imagined a place like this existed — rain, greenery and pleasant temperatures in the middle of summer. After seeing photos online, I brought my family here and it has exceeded all expectations'. Sunshine draws tourists to Dhofar's waterfalls, heritage sites Many travellers are combining nature excursions with cultural discovery. A Saudi visitor to the ancient site of Sumhuram in the Wilayat of Taqah expressed his surprise at the depth of the region's historical significance. 'I had no idea the Arabian Peninsula held such rich heritage', he said. 'The site is beautifully maintained and well-documented. I truly appreciate Oman's commitment to preserving and showcasing its historical landmarks'. Sumhuram, once one of the oldest known ports in the Arabian Peninsula, has become a major heritage attraction during the Khareef Dhofar Season, drawing history lovers and families alike. This year's Khareef Season has seen a notable surge in tourism, bolstered by targeted government initiatives, improved infrastructure and active promotional campaigns. Authorities have also stepped up inspection efforts to ensure service quality, while Dhofar Municipality and the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism continue to roll out a wide range of cultural and family-oriented events. With monsoon rains still feeding the region's springs and valleys; and the sun now casting light on its natural beauty, Dhofar has once again reaffirmed its place as the Gulf's ultimate summer destination.

‘Rumana' event in Jabal Al Akhdar attracts 8,953 visitors till July

Jabal Al Akhdar: The third edition of the 'Rumana' event, held at Janaen Farm in Jabal Al Akhdar, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, attracted 8,953 visitors from its launch on 4 July until 31 July. The event offers a rich selection of interactive experiences and family-friendly activities in the heart of Oman's natural landscapes. Running until 27 September, the event is supported by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in partnership with Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, in collaboration with 'Tibi' Company and the Agrotourism Development Company 'Janaen'. It is part of an integrated vision aimed at transforming the natural and cultural assets of Al Jabal Al Akhdar into inspiring tourism experiences. This initiative reinforces Oman's position as a leading regional tourism destination, promotes sustainable agritourism, empowers rural communities, and leverages agricultural resources to enhance the tourism experience. One of the key attractions of this year's 'Rumana' event is the fig-picking experience, which has become one of the most popular activities during the Al Jabal Al Akhdar season. Visitors begin their journey with an introductory tour led by a local farmer, followed by the hands-on experience of picking figs directly from the trees. This activity fosters a unique connection between visitors and nature, while also providing opportunities for memorable photos. The experience is both educational and entertaining, making it ideal for families and local agriculture enthusiasts. Coinciding with the Jabal Al Akhdar Festival, the 'Rumana' event celebrates the agricultural and tourism potential of the wilayat, blending authentic agritourism with vibrant family-friendly atmospheres. This year, visitors can enjoy direct fruit-picking experiences—including pomegranates, figs, and pears—during their harvest seasons, in addition to weekly educational and recreational workshops catering to all age groups. The event's open-air stage features interactive performances and family competitions, while children can enjoy a dedicated entertainment zone with various games and a miniature car racing track.
