Two upstate bars made the best bars in America list

Time Out3 days ago
Every casual barfly can tell you—there's nothing better than a great bar. And we're not talking about the chic cocktail lounges or fabulous hotel bars, necessarily. We mean the kind of place where, if everyone doesn't know your name, they at least know enough to say hello and remember your drink order.
Those drink dens are one of the great joys of life, and finding them is a boozy pleasure. Not every bar will be the right fit for every person; not every person will be the right fit for every bar. If you're down to try a lot of new places on a regular basis, you're bound to find one that you vibe with. But if you want to cut right to the good stuff (a stiff pour and some friendly chatter with a bartender), USA Today just released its list of the 29 best bars in America —and upstate New York is home to two of them!
Making the list are Marge's Lakeside Inn in Rochester and Horsefeathers in Tarrytown (a quick hop away on the Harlem Metro-North line). What makes either of these bars worth a trek?
Horsefeathers has the kind of history embedded within its walls and menus that makes a casual beer feel historically weighty; how could it not when Tarrytown played such a pivotal role in the early history of New York? Family-owned and open since 1981, the menu includes details about local attractions, and the venue boasts a large mural of famous authors, including Washington Irving and Groucho Marx, whose Marx Brothers 1932 movie Horse Feathers gave the bar its name. Even better: Every cocktail comes with a sidecar of "extra" so you can tell yourself it's a two-for-one situation. And considering its proximity to Sleepy Hollow, expect a lot of Headless Horseman decor come Halloween.
A bit further away from New York City, Marge's Lakeside Inn offers a very different vibe from Horsefeathers' dark and cozy one. Located on the beach (yes, Rochester has beaches) and open since 1960, Marge's has a tiki bar, a vintage jukebox and live music. Marge's venue itself originated as a Prohibition-era bar, which means that the cocktails being surreptitiously poured there came straight from the rum runners' boats, just a few yards from the bar. Talk about fresh!
The rest of USA Today 's bar round-up is an eclectic mix that skips the usual suspects (Manhattan and Los Angeles don't make the cut) to encourage exploration. Did your favorite local watering hole make the list?

B&M launches festive chocolate boxes including Reese's treats

B&M shoppers were flabbergasted to find Christmas selection boxes on the shelves. We're still over two months away from Halloween, yet the festive chocolate treats are already being stocked. 6 6 6 Fans of the budget retailer have expressed conflicted opinions, with some arguing it's too soon, while others admitted they'd still "scoff them". A picture of the seasonal goodies was shared in the Dansway Gifts and Bargains UK Facebook Group. "Festive Chocolate Selection Boxes are BACK at B&M," one shopper wrote. "A few we found whilst in store today, there's lots of other Christmas chocolate to choose from!" But one disappointed customer penned: "We've not even finished summer yet or had Halloween. "I swear Christmas gets earlier and earlier every year, makes you wonder how long these chocolates sit there before we buy and save for Christmas." Another added: "Too soon for Christmas but I'd still scoff them." The post is still garnering shares and likes, with many tagging their pals in the comments. While it may feel premature to start stocking up on Christmas treats, bargain hunters often bag better deals in the off-season. In fact, one expert has shared why now is the ideal time to buy your festive decorations, and where to buy them. FDA issues urgent recall of 'shaped' chocolate sold across US and on online over 'deadly' ingredient The selection boxes advertised in B&M include classics such as Cadbury, Nestle, Galaxy and Reese's peanut butter snacks. This comes as shoppers have also been complaining about Halloween decorations being pushed by major stores across the UK. Clothing and homeware brand Matalan is already giving people a taste of Autumn with its Halloween-themed products. One person complained: "Does someone want to tell Matalan its July. Don't get me wrong my fave time of year is Autumn but we're not there yet. "I've got to get through the hot months before I can look forward to hot chocs and blankets!" 6 6 6 Another one added: "Crazy.. let's have summer first!!" A third commented: "Getting too much with shops they always seem to be pushing things that are months away instead of enjoying the season we're in." One fan said: "Definitely not ready for this yet." Elsewhere, shelves at TK Maxx have been stocked with Halloween tea towels, cushions, blankets and plush toys from four months before the spooky holiday. How to save money on chocolate We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar. Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs... Go own brand - if you're not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you'll save by going for the supermarket's own brand bars. Shop around - if you've spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it's cheaper elsewhere. Websites like let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you're getting the best deal. Look out for yellow stickers - supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they've been reduced. They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged. Buy bigger bars - most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar. So if you've got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger. One shopper shared pictures of Halloween items on the shelves in the retailer's Doncaster store, saying: "It's starting." Others chimed in to say they'd also seen Halloween products in the stores in Preston and Oldham. One person commented: "No no NO ….. let's have summer first before we start seeing autumn things ….. jeeeez way too early !!" Another said: "Wooow really getting earlier and earlier every year huh!! will start seeing xmas stuff next week no doubt." A third person said: "Its June!!!! this is far too early." Some experts have said the growth of online shopping has meant traditional retailers are trying to extend the holiday season to compete. It's also because they have boosted profits during holiday seasons as shoppers spend more. Shops have been putting out their holiday stocks even earlier in recent years. Some experts have said the growth of online shopping has meant traditional retailers are trying to extend the holiday season to compete. It's also because they have boosted profits during holiday seasons as shoppers spend more. Charlotte Harrington, the manager at Summerhill's Garden Centre in Basildon, Essex, previously told The Sun that they open their Christmas department on the August bank holiday. "The stock comes in early and we gradually start putting it out on the shop floor. This is just a small fraction of what we have," she said. "But our Christmas displays are so spectacular it takes time to get everything set up, so we have to start early."

This Midwest city is transforming into a real-life Goosebumps story for Halloween

Remember getting goosebumps reading Goosebumps as a kid? This October, you can relive those middle school scares as R.L. Stine's hometown gets a Fear Street makeover, just in time for Halloween. Columbus, Ohio will celebrate the beloved series all month with loads of events and a meetup with the author himself. Columbus will transform into a living, breathing Goosebumps book, bathed in an eerie, slime-green light. The takeover coincides with several spooky milestones: the tenth anniversary of the Goosebumps film, the Disney+ reboot's continued buzz and the August release of Stine's latest page-turner, The Last Sleepover. This celebration is set to be a Halloween experience that's equal parts nostalgia trip, pop culture celebration and spine-chilling party. The scares kick off October 2 with a free outdoor screening of Goosebumps at Columbus Commons, part of the Sunset Movie Series. From there, the fright factor only ramps up. On October 23, Stine will unveil an actual "Fear Street" sign before his public author talk and signing at Columbus Metropolitan Library. That night, look up—City Hall, the Short North arches, Franklin Park Conservatory and other landmarks will glow neon slime-green in his honor. Even more local institutions are joining in to celebrate the hometown horror. Franklin Park Conservatory will host a Goosebumps -themed scavenger hunt, ZipZone Outdoor Adventures will offer spooky night flights and the Columbus Crew will debut an MLS-first: a UV-reactive slime-covered jersey designed with Adidas. And because no Halloween is complete without themed bites and drinks, the city's award-winning dining scene is going all in. Law Bird (a 2025 James Beard semifinalist) will serve a special Goosebumps menu, Budd Dairy Food Hall is crafting cocktails inspired by the books and Land-Grant Brewing Co. is transforming into "Nightmare on Town Street" with cauldrons, cobwebs and a signature green lime slushie. From a witch-and-warlock paddle on the Scioto River to story time challenges at local bookstores, this celebration is for fans old enough to remember the '90s TV series and new readers discovering the scares for the first time. Columbus isn't just honoring R.L. Stine—it's inviting you to step inside his twisted imagination.

Original stars of iconic 00s horror spoof franchise return for reboot

Scary Movie fans, it's time to get excited as Regina Hall and Anna Faris have officially returned for the upcoming reboot. The first film hit the big screen in July 2000, and became a huge hit, parodying some of the biggest horrors around, including I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream, Halloween and the Blair Witch Project. Keenen Ivory Wayans directed the first two films, while Shawn and Marlon Wayans wrote and starred in them. Last year, it was announced that another instalment of the spoof franchise was on the way with the Wayans brothers on board, more than a decade after the fifth one was released. After intense speculation, Anna and Regina – who played Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks in the first four films – have now confirmed they will be returning to the fold. In a joint statement via Deadline, they said: 'We can't wait to bring Brenda and Cindy back to life and be reunited with our great friends Keenen, Shawn and Marlon – three men we'd literally die for (in Brenda's case, again.)' Unsurprisingly, fans were delighted by the announcement and flocked to social media to share their excitement for the sequel. Reddit user Sully9614 celebrated: 'The world needs Anna Faris in dumb comedies again. Excited to see these 2 again!!' 'I can't wait to see what they do with the amazing influx of horror we have had the last few years,' TakedownMoreCorn cheered. Fontainesmemory commented: 'For me personally they litrealyl couldn't make this without Regina lol she was sooo funny [sic].' As Radioactivetoon added: 'Regina Hall is the real star of this series. She's absolutely hilarious. Without her, it's not the same. I'm glad she's back.' According to the outlet, the Wayans brothers are penning the script with Rick Alvarez, with untitled Scary Movie 6 project slated to be released next June. The first Scary Movie followed a group of teenagers accidentally hitting a man with their car and dumping his body in a lake – before they find themselves stalked by a killer in a Ghostface mask a year later. It raked in more than $270million at the global box office and spawned an entire series, with Scary Movie 2 released the following year. Marlon confirmed their involvement in the sixth instalment last year, posing with a Ghostface parody in a picture. 'WE'RE BACK!!! After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they've been asking for… a return to the SCARY MOVIE franchise,' he cheered. 'We're looking forward to having fun on the big screen again.' More Trending Teasing the upcoming follow-up, the brothers told Deadline: 'We couldn't be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. 'This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. 'We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It's a double reunion.' Got a story?
