Moose Wala documentary: BBC challenges civil suit, singer's father to file reply by June 23
The BBC World Service on Monday challenged the civil suit filed by slain singer Sidhu Moose Wala's father, Balkaur Singh, before a Mansa court, against the screening of a documentary on the singer 'The Killing Call'.
Hearing the matter, duty magistrate Ankit Airi, an additional civil judge, directed Balkaur to file a reply at the next hearing on June 23.
BBC lawyer Balwant Bhatia confirmed that no reply was filed today by the broadcaster, but an application was moved in the court pleading that the case is not maintainable.
Bhatia said that the court passed no order on the documentary.
Satinder Pal Singh, who is representing Balkaur, said that the plaintiff will respond to a BBC plea about the improper inclusion of parties in a suit.
Balkaur filed a suit against BBC, investigative journalist Ishleen Kaur and programme producer Ankur Jain on June 10.
Two other respondents were represented by GS Manna in the court on Monday.
The documentary, focusing on the murder of Moosewala, was initially scheduled to be screened publicly in Mumbai on June 11, but due to the growing controversy and legal challenges, it was released on YouTube.
The release went ahead despite a legal request from the singer's father, Balkaur Singh, who had approached the Mansa court seeking a stay.

Dipika said, 'Sabse pehli jo cheez karni thi, jo I think mere liye sabse zyada…one of the most difficult things is pure ek mahine mein rahi hai, was weaning off Ruhaan in one night. Mere paas option hi nahi tha. I had to do that and main bohot royi us raat ko. Main bohot zyada royi. (The very first thing I had to do -- and I think this has been one of the hardest things for me in the entire past month -- was weaning Ruhaan off in just one night. I had no other option. I had to do it, and I cried a lot that night. I cried so much)'. She mentioned that while Ruhaan was nearing two years old and would eventually have to stop breastfeeding, she hadn't anticipated it would happen in this manner. The actor was seen getting emotional at multiple points in the video. The actor added, 'But ab body mein hazaar dawaiyaan jayengi, treatment hoga, and aisi situation mein bachhe ko aap na feed karo wohi better hota hai. (But now, with so many medicines going into my body and treatment starting, it's better not to breastfeed a child in such a situation)'. Dipika Kakar was diagnosed with a tumour in her liver in May. Earlier this month, Dipika underwent a 14-hour-long surgery for her stage 2 liver cancer. In his Vlog video on YouTube, Shoaib shared that during the surgery, Dipika's gall bladder as well as a small portion of her liver were removed. "Her tumour was taken out nicely. The gall bladder was also taken out after surgery because of a stone. Because the liver had a tumour, some portion, a small percentage of it, was also cut. There is nothing to stress about it since the liver is an organ that regenerates itself," he said. The actor also took to Instagram to update her fans and followers about her health, revealing that she has been diagnosed with stage 2 liver cancer. A part of her note read, "As you all are aware last few weeks have been quite difficult for us... walking into the hospital for a pain in the upper area of my stomach... and then finding out its a tennis ball size tumour in the liver and then Finding out that the tumour is Second stage Malignant (Cancerous) ... it has been one of the most difficult time we have seen, experienced!" Dipika met Shoaib Ibrahim on the set of Sasural Simar Ka, and the couple later tied the knot in 2018 in the presence of friends and family. They welcomed their first child, son Ruhan, in 2023.

Katie Boulter says death threats and abuse highlight dark side of tennis betting
LONDON — British tennis player Katie Boulter has told the BBC she received death threats targeting her and her family during the French Open, saying in an interview that online abuse has become the norm and that she is worried about the impact it will have on younger players. Boulter, who is 28-year-old and ranked No. 39 in the WTA, said she believes many of the abusive messages are sent by people who are placing bets on tennis matches, The message threatening her loved ones was sent during her French Open first-round match against Carole Monnet on May 29. After losing the first-set tie-break, Boulter won the match 6-7 , 6-1. 6-1. But the loss of the tiebreaker prompted the outrage. 'Hope you get cancer,' said one message. Another mentioned damaging her 'grandmother's grave if she's not dead by tomorrow' and 'candles and a coffin for your entire family.' A third said: 'Go to hell, I lost money my mother sent me.' Boulter, who shared with the BBC screenshots of the messages, said she is worried about the toll the widespread abuse takes on younger players. 'At the very start of my career, it's probably something I took very personally... getting comments about the way you look," she said. "It becomes more apparent every single time you go on your phone. "I think it increases in number and it also increases in the level of things that people say. I don't think there's anything off the cards now.' Many other players have previously reported online abuse. In a bid to try to protect athletes from that sort of abuse, the International Tennis Federation , Women's Tennis Association , All England Lawn Tennis Club and United States Tennis Association in 2023 launched the Threat Matrix. The program monitors public-facing social accounts for abusive and threatening content on social networks. It also provides support for players. According to statistics provided to the BBC by data science firm Signify, the ITF and WTA, about 8,000 abusive, violent or threatening messages were sent publicly to 458 tennis players through their social media accounts in 2024. Boulter, who received abuse after wins as well as losses, said a lot of it comes from people who have placed bets on her matches. 'As far as death threats, it's just not something you want to be reading straight after an emotional loss,' she said. 'A lot of the time you get it after you win as well.' According to Signify, angry gamblers sent 40% of all detected abuse, with messages clearly related to betting activity because of the timing or content of the abuse.
