Govt extends social welfare schemes to Vanarmare tribe
The social welfare department on Monday interacted with the Vanarmare tribe at Nirankal-Ponda to create awareness about govt schemes. It was found that although in dire need, none of the tribals benefited from any social welfare schemes, including educational schemes of govt.

The social welfare department has several pre and post matric scholarships that the community was not aware of let alone availing benefits of it.
The traditional occupation of the tribe, as their name suggests, involved killing monkeys and making a living by selling their meat. However, most have kept their bows and arrows aside to comply with the forest and wildlife acts to work as daily wage labourers.

We felt it was our duty to reach out to this community and explore the possibility of extending govt schemes to them,' said director of social welfare Ajit Panchwadkar.
A special camp will be organised with the panchayat to complete documentation and required formalities to extend benefits to the primitive tribe, he said. 'Although documentation will be a hurdle, it is our duty to resolve it for them. They are the most underprivileged community, cut off from society, and it is our responsibility to extend a hand to them,' Panchwadkar said.
The team, also comprising deputy director Medora D'Costa, assistant director Rashmi Rawal, district welfare officer Anette Gomes, and the village panchayat secretary and field worker of Bethora Nirancal, interacted with the community and explained various schemes of the social welfare department to them, who were largely unaware of them.
TOI
reported in the past that the community was deprived of all govt welfare schemes meant for the underprivileged class of society, as they didn't possess any documents to establish their identity.
TOI
also reported that members of the tribe voted for the very first time in the 2017 assembly elections.

B'deshi Monk With Indian Passport Exposes Big Flaw
1 2 Nagpur: The curious case of Joysen Barua, a Buddhist monk from Bangladesh — one of the first applicants for citizenship under CAA — has shown how it's easy to make an authentic Indian passport with fake documents. On Monday, Barua walked into the regional passport office in Nagpur, handed over his Indian passport and confessed that he had obtained it by submitting forged documents, including Aadhaar card and birth certificate. Barua, who was issued the passport in 2023, is now on the run. The authorities quickly impounded the passport and informed police, who registered an offence. The regional passport officer, Kshtij Gurav, confirmed that a passport was issued to Barua. Police are investigating if his documents were counterfeit. In March 2024 when CAA came into effect, Barua made an application under the new law. Sources told TOI that Barua obtained the passport in the name of Joysen Choudhary, and his date of birth differed from his Bangladeshi documents. In his CAA application, he submitted his school leaving certificate and marksheet issued from Chittagong district in Bangladesh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo When he was expected to get Indian citizenship through CAA, Barua preferred to surrender the passport and approached the office here, but was named in an FIR. Sources in the passport office admitted there's a loophole in the system, which can be exploited. Passports are issued based on an online system in which documents like Aadhar, PAN, birth certificate, and address proof are uploaded. The applicants get an appointment at the respective passport seva kendras, where documents are taken at face value and there's no mechanism to confirm authenticity from the issuing authority, a top official told TOI. Moreover, it's also expected that veracity of claims is done during police verification. If every document is counter-checked at the seva kendra, issuing of passports can get indefinitely delayed, he said. The Digilocker system can prevent such frauds. It is a cloud-based facility, which allows direct access to documents through the issuing authority. If an applicant uses DigiLocker, then only genuine documents get uploaded. For example, in the case of Aadhaar, it would directly access the Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) system. In case no Aadhar has been issued, nothing would be uploaded in the passport application. However, even as the DigiLocker system has been available since 2018, there are not many users, and it has not been made mandatory, said a source in the passport office. Barua came to India on a tourist visa through Bodh Gaya, a Buddhist pilgrimage centre in Bihar. It is a common practice among Bangladeshis to reach Gaya and then move to different parts of the country, said a source. An official involved in the case said it was discussed whether Barua can be deported, but it's also being considered that he hails from a persecuted minority community in Bangladesh and CAA was introduced for them. Barua's community lives in the plains of Chittagong while Chakma tribals, who too are Buddhists, live in the hill tracts. Unfair to say RFI didn't utilise funds: former president Rajlaxmi
Pune: Former president of Rowing Federation of India (RFI) Rajlaxmi Singh Deo has termed as "unfair" the government's submission in the Rajya Sabha that the body had failed to utilise the funds allocated to it for the financial 2024-25. In a written submission in the Upper House of the Parliament, the Centre, citing a set of data it had compiled, claimed that prominent national sports federations including the RFI had not spent even half the money provided for their sports programmes. "They didn't give any sanctions, and they're saying we didn't utilise the money. It is very, very unfair on us," Rajlaxmi told TOI over phone on Thursday. We had a Senior Nationals also last year, (for) which the players had to pay from the pocket. "For the Junior Nationals, (we) kept sending the proposal, they didn't clear. And they didn't clear any camp for the senior Asian Championships, so we could not participate. "We came last after being on the top for many years. We've been on the top right from 2008 in the juniors," Rajlaxmi said. "So we didn't get any exposure since the Asian Games (in 2023). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo We lost out on two years. So it's not fair to say that we didn't utilise the fund. The funds were not released to us." In fact, in June last year, the RFI had sent a reminder letter to the Special Development Officer, in-charge of rowing with TOPS, about the long-pending proposals for national camps in preparation for Asian Indoor Championships for both seniors and juniors as well as participation in the Khelo India Women's rowing league. RFI eventually managed to get a 21-day (much shorter duration) camp for junior rowers sanctioned and the team returned with a ninth-place finish, its worst ever result, from the Asian Junior (U-19 and U-23) Championships in China. "The women programme is in doldrums today," Rajlaxmi, whose term ended in Feb 2024 but was asked to continue to hold charge by the Delhi High Court following a petition filed by the Delhi State rowing body against the RFI elections. She eventually handed over the charge to the new group of office-bearers after the Court disposed of the case in June this year. "The men continuously train and the women are spread out in four-five different cities. So the only way we can get them together is (by having) one central camp. That doesn't happen 12 months a year. "Unless we get support for 12 months a year, we cannot achieve any results." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Nagpurian sculpts Saptamrittika Ganesh idol using soil of seven cities
1 2 Nagpur: Ganpati is considered the Lord of Arts. As this year's Ganeshotsav approaches, the work of crafting the beloved Bappa is in its final stages. One traditional artist, Suresh Pathak, has this year sculpted a Ganpati idol using soil from seven different cities, and named it Saptamrittika. With seven days remaining for Bappa's arrival, sculptors are giving final touches to idols. With no restriction on the sale of Plaster of Paris idols this year, both clay and PoP idols are available in the market. However, in a unique effort, Pathak has made Ganesh idols crafted from seven different types of soil, including soil from Vidarbha as well as from outside states. Pathak's creativity is attracting people's attention. A senior member of the traditional sculptors' association in the city, Pathak has always campaigned against the sale of PoP idols, specially as awareness has grown over the last few years. Against this backdrop, Pathak has this year created a Ganpati Bappa idol in natural colours using seven different types of soil. To create the Saptamrittika Ganpati, he has used soil of special colour and specific type from the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Pathak had crafted 100 idols of this type on an experimental basis, all of which were sold within no time. Some 50 idols of this type have been sent to Pune and 20 idols to Mumbai. Devotees have given a tremendous response to Pathak's unique Bappa. Pathak's is already preparing to go all out with his innovation next year, and take up production of Saptamrittika Bappa on a large scale. A few days ago, Pathak even presented an idol as a special gift to Union minister Nitin Gadkari, drawing effusive praise from him. Box: Soil used To create the Saptamrittika Ganpati, Suresh Pathak has used distinctive multicoloured soil from seven cities in three states of India. This includes yellow soil from Chhindwada and Adasi of Madhya Pradesh, dark coloured soil from Azamgarh of Uttar Pradesh, and distinctive, multicoloured soil from Rajura (Chandrapur), Andhalgaon (Bhandara), Yavatmal and Savargaon of Maharashtra.
