High profile defamation suit between ex-nat'l shuttler Robert Lin & Supermax boss set for Aug 6-8

Focus Malaysia14 hours ago
THE Kuala Lumpur High Court has fixed Aug 6-8 this year to hear a defamation suit filed by former national men's double badminton player Robert Lin Woon Fui against Supermax Corp Bhd executive chairman Datuk Seri Stanley Thai Kim Sim and businessman Datuk Teh Chee Kien.
Lin had on March 15, 2022 filed a defamation suit against Thai and Teh seeking RM10 mil in damages from each of them.
Both Thai and Teh filed their defence on May 27, 2022. In addition, Thai also filed a counterclaim against Lin seeking damages.
The defamation suits are expected to attract interest as they involve two high-profile personalities.
Thai, 65, is the co-founder of listed Supermax Corp Bhd which is today ranked as among Malaysia's Big Four glove makers.
The company which has manufacturing plants in Malaysia and the US, exports to over 165 countries. Thai also sat on the board of the Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council from 2010 to 2015.
Meanwhile, Lin, 42, partnered Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari to reach a career-high world No. 4 in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings in 2006. The duo also helped Malaysia win the team bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games.
The Malaysians were dubbed the 'Chinese men's doubles killer' as they defeated Guo Zhendong and Xie Zhongbo in the 2006 Badminton World Federation World Championships in Madrid. – July 7, 2025

Motor racing-Ben Sulayem says F1 could have V8 engines as soon as 2029

Formula One F1 - Miami Grand Prix - Miami International Autodrome, Miami, Florida, United States - May 3, 2025 McLaren's Lando Norris shakes hands with FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem after finishing second during qualifying REUTERS/Brian Snyder/File Photo (Reuters) -Formula One could go back to using noisy V8 engines with fully sustainable fuel by 2029 at the earliest, according to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The sport is entering a new engine era next season but the head of the governing body suggested last February that a return to the naturally-aspirated V8s or V10s was being considered after that. The V8 engines were last used in 2013, before the current 1.6-litre V6 units. "The current engine is so complicated, you have no idea, and it is costly," Ben Sulayem told reporters at the weekend's British Grand Prix. "R&D is reaching 200 million (dollars), and the engine is costing approximately 1.8 to 2.1, so if we go with a straight V8, let's see. "Many of the manufacturers produce V8s in their cars, so commercially it's correct. How much is it? You drop it. The target is more than 50% in everything." Ben Sulayem said the V8 engine would also have significant weight advantages and the sound would be welcomed by both nostalgic fans and the new generation. "To us, the V8 is happening. With the teams now, I'm very optimistic, happy about it. FOM (Formula One Management) are supportive, the teams are realising it is the right way," he said. "We need to do it soon... you need three years, so hopefully by 2029 we have something there, but the fuel is also very expensive, and we have to be very careful with that. Transmissions are very expensive." Ben Sulayem also spoke about the possibility of a Chinese team filling the final 12th slot, something he has mentioned before, and said he still felt the sport needed more cars rather than more races. "The time will come when we feel it is right to open an expression of interest," he said of filling the 12th slot. "We are not here to upset other teams. It won't be just go and do it for the sake of doing it. It has to be worth it for us. The team has to add value to sustaining the business of Formula One." General Motors' Cadillac brand is due to become the 11th team next season, a slot won after initial resistance from the other teams and Liberty Media-owned Formula One. Chinese tourism to Sarajevo surges amid strengthening bilateral ties

SARAJEVO, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Sarajevo received over 11,600 Chinese tourist visits in May, marking a 28.7 percent increase year-on-year, according to data released Monday by the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) national statistics agency. During the same period, the number of overnight stays by Chinese tourists in the capital exceeded 13,200, up 19 percent from May 2024. The growth comes as China and BiH celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025. This year also marks the eighth anniversary of a mutual visa exemption policy between the two countries. The agreement, effective since May 29, 2018, allows ordinary passport holders to stay up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. Chinese tourists ranked among the top five contributors to foreign overnight stays in April, alongside visitors from Serbia, Türkiye, and Croatia.

China's Hebei province a growing tourist hotspot for Malaysians, official says

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Xinhua) -- North China's Hebei Province is fast becoming a tourist hotspot for Malaysians seeking to experience the country, an official from Malaysia's tourism promotion agency said here on Monday. The rich history and cultural heritage of the province, along with its many unique attractions, make it an attractive option for Malaysians seeking to deepen their understanding of China while gaining unique experiences, Nuwal Fadhilah Ku Azmi, senior director of International Promotion Division for Asia and Africa at Tourism Malaysia, said in her remarks at a tourism promotion event at the China Cultural Center in Kuala Lumpur. "Today's event not only opens a window for Malaysians to explore the beauty and spirit of Hebei, but also reinforces the strong cultural ties and growing tourism exchange between China and Malaysia. We believe that events like these foster deeper mutual understanding and pave the way for greater people-to-people connectivity," she said. Minister of the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia Zheng Xuefang said the proximity of Malaysia to China and the strong ties between the two have facilitated people-to-people exchanges, particularly through tourism, which continues to benefit both countries. "Tourism serves as an important vehicle for people-to-people exchange between China and Malaysia. It is a new engine for bilateral economic cooperation and also a vital bridge connecting the hearts of people," he said, adding that China and Malaysia are key source markets for each other's tourism industries. The "Exploring Hebei with Intangible Cultural Heritage" cultural and tourism promotion event featured an exhibition of traditional crafts from the province, including intricate bas-reliefs, paper cutting and pottery, as well as a cultural show demonstrating traditional Chinese opera.
