‘The Naked Gun' Review: A Chip Off the Old Blockhead

New York Times21 hours ago
Frank Drebin Jr., the blissfully, unselfconsciously silly hero played by Liam Neeson in 'The Naked Gun,' has a genius for disaster. Frank is a detective in Los Angeles, where he fights crime and bends the law, intentionally and not. With his loose ties and weary mien, he resembles a cop right out of central casting, like one of those precinct old-timers who crack cynical in a television police procedural. If Frank seems especially suited for the assignment it's because he's a chip off the old blockhead, and is following — with elaborate pratfalls and many, many nonsensical misunderstandings — his father's bumbling, stumbling example.
The original blockhead, of course, was Frank Drebin Sr., played to doltish perfection by Leslie Nielsen in a trilogy that started with 'The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!' (1988). A spinoff of a short-lived TV series, 'Police Squad!' (1982), the movies wrung laughs from the gulf between their hero's deadpan self-seriousness and his and the world's wholesale absurdity. At one point in the first film, Frank goes undercover as a baseball umpire and flamboyantly calls strikes while Reggie Jackson threatens to kill Queen Elizabeth and a villainous Ricardo Montalban bites down on a severed human finger tucked in a hot dog bun.
The new movie largely adheres to the formula created by the wisenheimers (Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, Pat Proft) behind the first 'Naked Gun.' As before, the new movie is fronted by a performer better known for clenched-jaw sobriety than slipping on banana peels. Nielsen, among other roles, played the doomed captain in 'The Poseidon Adventure.' Neeson has a tonier, more diverse résumé and the peer recognition to go with it, having earned an Oscar nod for his title role in 'Schindler's List.' Beginning with 'Taken' (2009), though, he has also become a fixture in the kind of violent, elaborately plotted thrillers that go so over the top they verge on, and at times regress into, unwitting self-parody.
The story here is certainly the least of it and involves Frank's getting in and out of trouble as well as in and out of his car amid goofy word play and set pieces, like an early bank robbery that turns into a slapstick free-for-all. He's soon making eyes at the resident slinkstress (a winning Pamela Anderson), crossing paths with a power-grubbing tech villain (Danny Huston, spot on) and engaging in much foolishness at the precinct and elsewhere. CCH Pounder shows up as Frank's beleaguered boss while Paul Walter Hauser plays his work bestie. There are nods to the earlier movies, including an unfunny bit about O.J. Simpson, a fixture in the trilogy, and some digs at police brutality that are almost offensively toothless.

'Daily Show' Calls 'Bulls**t' On Right-Wing Defense Of Sydney Sweeney Ad

'Daily Show' correspondent Desi Lydic on Thursday hit back at right-wing media figures over their reaction to backlash against Sydney Sweeney's controversial American Eagle ad. Lydic referred to those accusing the ad — which declares that the blonde, blue-eyed 'Euphoria' star has 'great jeans' — of being a 'racist dog whistle' before turning to clips of conservative media figures who, in turn, reacted with a 'dog megaphone.' The supercut featured ex-Fox News host Megyn Kelly, who took aim at so-called 'nonsense where you are not allowed to ever celebrate' someone who is white and blonde with blue eyes. Fox News' Greg Gutfeld, in a separate clip from 'The Five,' imagined the backlash was due to Sweeney not being 'a plus-size swim model on the cover of Sports Illustrated' or a 'male prom queen.' Lydic — who mocked Kelly and Gutfeld for gushing over how Sweeney's body appears in the ad — swiftly advised right-wingers to 'calm down.' 'This is such bullshit, blonde women have had constant representation, OK? Inentertainment, infashion, in letter turning,' Lydic said. She proceeded to slam conservatives, 'It's not that they want to see more white women, it's that they want to see none of anyone else. For a story about boobs, it sure has a hell of a lot of assholes.' Her comments arrived moments after she called out Kelly's sudden change in tone toward Sweeney, who she once suggested to be the 'new toast of the town' due to her 'amazing breasts' roughly one month ago. The 'Daily Show' correspondent pointed to several instances where Kelly ripped famous women for their looks. 'Yeah, yeah! That's right, women, you listen to Megyn Kelly and hide your sexuality unless your body makes liberals mad, in which case it's a kickass body! Hell yeah! Go girl!' Lydic quipped. 'You motorboat those liberals here but not so much that it threatens Megyn or so help me God, she will destroy you ho bags!' Check out more of Lydic's Thursday monologue on 'The Daily Show.' Fourth man accused in D'Vontaye Mitchell's death outside a Milwaukee hotel pleads guilty to felony murder

The last of four Milwaukee hotel workers accused of killing a man by pinning him to the ground has pleaded guilty to being a party to felony murder. Former Hyatt Hotel security guard Todd Erickson entered the plea in connection with D'Vontaye Mitchell's death in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Thursday morning, online court records indicate. Erickson was set to go on trial on August 11. He faces up to 15 years in prison when he's sentenced September 3. His attorney, Kerri Cleghorn, didn't immediately return a voicemail left at her office. Erickson's plea moves a massive criminal case reminiscent of George Floyd's death a step closer to resolution. According to investigators, Mitchell ran into the Hyatt's lobby in June 2024 and went into the women's bathroom. Two women later told detectives that Mitchell tried to lock them in the bathroom. Security guard Brandon Turner pulled Mitchell out of the bathroom and together with a guest dragged him out of the lobby onto a hotel driveway. Turner, Erickson, bellhop Herbert Williamson and front desk worker Devin Johnson-Carson continued to struggle with Mitchell before taking him to the ground and piling on top of him, according to a criminal complaint. Hotel surveillance video shows Johnson-Carson holding Mitchell's legs while Erickson, Turner and Williamson held down his upper body. They kept him pinned for eight to nine minutes. By the time emergency responders arrived, Mitchell had stopped breathing. A medical examiner later determined that Mitchell was morbidly obese, suffered from heart disease, and had cocaine and methamphetamine in his system. The medical examiner concluded that he had suffocated and ruled his death a homicide. Attorneys for Mitchell's family have likened his death to the murder of Floyd, a Black man who died in 2020 after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for about nine minutes. Floyd's death sparked a national reckoning on racial relations. Mitchell was Black. Court records identify Erickson as white and Turner, Williamson and Johnson-Carson as Black. The four workers told investigators that Mitchell was strong and tried to bite Erickson, but they didn't mean to hurt him. Ambridge Hospitality, the company that manages the Hyatt, fired all four of them in July 2024. Turner, Williamson and Johnson-Carson were all charged with being a party to felony murder along with Erickson. Turner pleaded guilty to that count this past March. Williamson and Johnson-Carson both pleaded guilty to a reduced count of misdemeanor battery that same month. All three are set to be sentenced Sept. 3, the same day as Erickson.
