Whanganui rugby: Marist eye playoff comeback with seasoned players and new talent
Marist must solve the puzzle of how to regularly defeat one or more of the Top 4 sides, and it appeared they nearly had the answer in their 22-15 loss to Whanganui Rugby Challenge Shield holders Byfords Readi-Mix Taihape on opening day.
'We forced our hand a bit too much, and the bounce of the ball didn't go our way,' said Koro.
'But we put our best foot forward, and just a bit of patience brought us back into it, and a bit more accuracy in a few areas.'
Much of the improvement could come down to their well-rounded loose forwards, as standout veteran Bradley Graham steps back to a reserve role for the likes of talented Whanganui Under 20's rep Jayden Garland-Lower, 63-game Steelform Whanganui player Samu Kubunavanua and multi-club veteran Brett Joyes.
'They're our senior veteran players now, and they've never shied away from physical work,' said Koro of Joyes and Kubunavanua.
'Having [Samu] around the team has been a boost, the boys see him around and it gives them that confidence that we've got some big bodies here that can help.
'[Brett's] your typical, old-school style of play - 'I'm here, I know my role and that's what I'll do'.
'Jayden done his [injury] rehab on the offseason well enough, now it's just trying to get him to stay on the field this year, and that's just about us managing his minutes, because he's a handy No7 coming through.'
Another addition is Tim Goodwin, adding great utility value to a backline with talent like Akiwa Koro, Daniel Kauika, Jamie Robertson, and CJ Stowers.
Marist will observe with interest Taihape's next Shield defence against Wanganui Car Centre Kaierau at Memorial Park, while Rātana host Waverley Harvesting Border in the Pa.

Coach Derek Manson and his Marist team have been planning this week on how to approach tomorrow's game. "There is a possibility that we could be playing them [POB] again in the semi next week. It could be a good time to rest a few players." One Marist player who might be on limited duties this week is captain Jackson Bevin. The openside flanker has taken on the heaviest workload every week for Marist during the last two seasons. Marist are in a tricky position, not wanting to lose momentum after winning their past five games in a row. "We were happy with how the team [ground] out the victory last week. They have belief and know-how to win." The Barbarians beat competition leaders Pirates Old Boys 29-25 last weekend to book their spot in the semifinals. The Barbarians can determine whether they finish third or fourth when they take on Star at Oreti Park tomorrow. Star will be playing their last fixture of the year, but have enough quality in their team to win this game. Blues will host Woodlands in the third dead rubber at Balmoral Drive. Woodlands had already booked a semifinal on their home ground before beating Star 56-22 last week. Woodlands had lost their previous three games, but bounced back in style to knock the defending champions out of finals contention.

Pair lock in playoff spots
Marist and the Eastern Northern Barbarians locked in their spots in the Galbraith Shield semifinals after winning their penultimate round-robin games on Saturday afternoon. The Barbarians beat competition leaders Pirates Old Boys 29-25 in Te Anau, while Marist had a 29-24 win on their home ground against Blues. Woodlands had already booked a home semifinal before beating Star 56-22 on Wednesday night. Woodlands had lost their previous three games but with Marty McKenzie slotting in at first five in the rare midweek game, they bounced back in style to knock the defending champions out of finals contention. Second five Fletcher Morgan scored four of Woodlands' eight tries and landed all eight conversions. Morgan has been one of the competition's best players this season. The Barbarians scored a try in the last play of the game to claim victory over POB. The Barbarians had dominated the opening 20 minutes in Te Anau and scored the first two tries. During the 10 minutes before halftime, POB front-rowers Alex Fraito and Levi Gage barged over for tries. The Barbarian forwards then scored from a lineout drive on the stroke of halftime to lead 19-12. Fraito scored again in the second half and a couple of penalty goals to Kaea Nikora had the visitors ahead 25-22 with 10 minutes to go. The Barbarians scored in the last play of the game to secure the five competition points. The Baabaas will determine whether they finish third or fourth after their 13th and last game this Saturday against Star. Marist earned a 29-24 over Blues on a heavy surface at Miller Street. Blues started the game well and led 24-12 at halftime. Halfback Connor McLeod and Stags team-mate Faletoi Peni, at second five, took the field in the second half. Marist coach Derek Manson said the two Stags had been a welcome addition in recent weeks, but the whole team were improving. "Our fullback, Aiden Harrington, was out with a broken thumb for the first half of the season but he's been very good for us in recent weeks,'' Manson said. ''Xavier Wright is going good on the blindside. He'd been coming off the bench for first half of the season but he has been nailing the starting role." Manson said the coaching team were happy with how their team ground out a victory on Saturday. "It wasn't pretty but the boys had belief and knew how to win. They (Blues) made us work hard for it." Marist No 8 Ben Fotheringham was man of the match. Marist scored five tries to three, backline players Keanu Kahukura and Riley Hika scoring two tries each in the second half. By John Langford
