Teetotal Trump hits brewers with surprise beer can tax

Yahoo04-04-2025

Brewers have been hit by a surprise 'beer can tax' after it emerged that lager, stout and pale ale would incur a higher US tariff than other food and drink.
Under sweeping global tariffs announced on Wednesday by Donald Trump, most food and drink imported into the US from Europe incurs a tariff of 20pc. A lower rate of 10pc applies to the UK.
However, the small print of the new US tariff system shows that cans of beer will in fact be subject to the higher rate of 25pc that Mr Trump has applied to aluminium.
Brewers have warned that the decision to extend the 25pc tariff to canned beers could cost thousands of jobs and hammer beer businesses across the UK and Europe.
Emma McClarkin, the chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: 'A 25pc tariff on beer imported into the US is a direct hit to the brewers of the UK, who contribute so much to this country's economy and heritage.
'We urge the Government to defend the great British brewing industry and strike a deal which removes these harmful tariffs.
'With the enormous cost of doing business, many British brewers won't be able to sustain a hit such as this from one of our biggest trading partners.'
European brewers are also lobbying Brussels to defend their interests amid warnings 100,000 jobs could be lost on the Continent – 5pc of all brewing jobs in Europe.
Julia Leferman, the secretary-general of Brewers of Europe, told the Financial Times: 'We are calling on the [European] Commission to use all diplomatic channels and whether through negotiation or retaliation, find a way to de-escalate this tariff in which we have become a collateral victim.'
Dutch brewer Heineken, Denmark's Carlsberg and Dublin-based Guinness are all significant exporters to the US and will be affected by the new tariffs.
Brewers are not yet clear on some crucial details, such as whether the 25pc tariff will be charged on the value of the entire product or just on the value of the can. A BBPA spokesman said it looked from the US government's wording as if the former would be the case.
Mr Trump is a self-proclaimed teetotaller. He has said in interviews that this is because his older brother, Freddie, was an alcoholic – a factor that contributed to his premature death.
The president has said: 'It was a very tough period of time. If you don't start you're never going have a problem. If you do start you might have a problem. And it's a tough problem to stop.'

Rwanda, Congo sign US-brokered peace deal to end fighting that killed thousands

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo signed a U.S.-brokered peace agreement on Friday, raising hopes for an end to fighting that has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands more this year. The agreement marks a breakthrough in talks held by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration and aims to attract billions of dollars of Western investment to a region rich in tantalum, gold, cobalt, copper, lithium, and other minerals. At a ceremony with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, the two African countries' foreign ministers signed the agreement pledging to implement a 2024 deal that would see Rwandan troops withdraw from eastern Congo within 90 days, according to a copy seen by Reuters. Kinshasa and Kigali will also launch a regional economic integration framework within 90 days, the agreement said. 'They were going at it for many years, and with machetes – it is one of the worst, one of the worst wars that anyone has ever seen. And I just happened to have somebody that was able to get it settled,' Trump said on Friday, ahead of the signing of the deal in Washington. Advertisement 'We're getting, for the United States, a lot of the mineral rights from the Congo as part of it. They're so honored to be here. They never thought they'd be coming.' Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe called the agreement a turning point. Congo Foreign Minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner said it must be followed by disengagement. 6 Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo signed a U.S.-brokered peace agreement on Friday, raising hopes for an end to fighting that has killed thousands this year. REUTERS Advertisement Trump later met both officials in the Oval Office, where he presented them with letters inviting Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, to Washington to sign a package of agreements that Massad Boulos, Trump's senior adviser for Africa, dubbed the 'Washington Accord'. Nduhungirehe told Trump that past deals had not been implemented and urged Trump to stay engaged. Trump warned of 'very severe penalties, financial and otherwise', if the agreement is violated. Rwanda has sent at least 7,000 soldiers over the border, according to analysts and diplomats, in support of the M23 rebels, who seized eastern Congo's two largest cities and lucrative mining areas in a lightning advance earlier this year. ECONOMIC DEALS Boulos told Reuters in May that Washington wanted the peace agreement and accompanying minerals deals to be signed simultaneously this summer. Rubio said on Friday that heads of state would be 'here in Washington in a few weeks to finalize the complete protocol and agreement.' However, the agreement signed on Friday gives Congo and Rwanda three months to launch a framework 'to expand foreign trade and investment derived from regional critical mineral supply chains.' A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday that another agreement on the framework would be signed by the heads of state at a separate White House event at an unspecified time. There is an understanding that progress in ongoing talks in Doha – a separate but parallel mediation effort with delegations from the Congolese government and M23 – is essential before the signing of the economic framework, the source said. Advertisement The agreement signed on Friday voiced 'full support' for the Qatar-hosted talks. It also says Congo and Rwanda will form a joint security coordination mechanism within 30 days and implement a plan agreed last year to monitor and verify the withdrawal of Rwandan soldiers within three months. Congolese military operations targeting the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a Congo-based armed group that includes remnants of Rwanda's former army and militias that carried out the 1994 genocide, are meant to conclude over the same timeframe. Reuters reported on Thursday that Congolese negotiators had dropped an earlier demand that Rwandan troops immediately leave eastern Congo, paving the way for the signing ceremony on Friday. Advertisement Congo, the United Nations, and Western powers say Rwanda is supporting M23 by sending troops and arms. 6 Rubio said on Friday that heads of state would be 'here in Washington in a few weeks to finalize the complete protocol and agreement.' AFP via Getty Images Rwanda has long denied helping M23, saying its forces are acting in self-defence against Congo's army and ethnic Hutu militiamen linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide, including the FDLR. 'This is the best chance we have at a peace process for the moment despite all the challenges and flaws,' said Jason Stearns, a political scientist at Simon Fraser University in Canada who specialises in Africa's Great Lakes region. Advertisement Similar formulas have been attempted before, Stearns added, and 'it will be up to the U.S., as they are the godfather of this deal, to make sure both sides abide by the terms.' 6 Trump signs a letter of congratulations as he meets with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Rwanda, Olivier Nduhungirehe, and the Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, in the Oval Office on June 27, 2025. Getty Images The agreement signed on Friday says Rwanda and Congo will de-risk mineral supply chains and establish value chains 'that link both countries, in partnership, as appropriate, with the U.S. and U.S. investors.' Advertisement The terms carry 'a strategic message: securing the east also means securing investments,' said Tresor Kibangula, a political analyst at Congo's Ebuteli research institute. 'It remains to be seen whether this economic logic will suffice' to end the fighting, he added.

These overbought stocks need to cool off as the market trades back at record highs

Some stocks are due to cool down after this week's big market rally, according to one popular metric. The S & P 500 reached an all-time high and closed at a record Friday, marking an incredible turnaround after investors' more intense tariff and trade concerns have dissipated. Though President Donald Trump said that trade talks between Canada and the U.S . have been terminated, traders managed to look past that development and all three of the major averages ended the week on a strong note. Stocks that have soared during this rally could see a pullback in the coming weeks, however. We used the CNBC Pro Screener to find the most overbought and oversold stocks by measuring their 14-day relative strength index, or RSI. An RSI above 70 suggests a stock could be overbought and could see a near-term decline, while an RSI below 30 implies a stock is oversold and may bounce. Take a look at the overbought group below: Tech stocks and artificial intelligence beneficiaries are some of the most overbought names after this week's run-up. Jabil, a maker of electronic components and an Apple supplier, is the most overbought name this week with an RSI of 90.8. Shares jumped more than 5% this week and they touched a a fresh 52-week high on Friday. Earlier this month, the company lifted its full-year outlook for core earnings per share and net revenue. Microsoft , Netflix and chipmakers Advanced Micro Devices and Micron Technology also each have high RSIs, implying their shares could see a dip. Microsoft, which has an RSI of 79.1, saw its shares jump nearly 4% this week. Morgan Stanley this week increased its price target on the stock to $530 from $482, saying the firm sees the "yields on Microsoft's investments in generative AI becoming increasingly apparent." Wells Fargo also lifted its price target on Microsoft this week, citing "its early AI lead." Advanced Micro Devices saw a 12% gain this week. It's one of the stocks that has aided the S & P 500's comeback since the April low. Data storage stocks Western Digital and Seagate , which have also ridden the AI wave, have high RSIs of 88.6 and 84.8, respectively. Seagate shares have rallied 8% this week and nearly 64% year to date, benefiting from expected growth in storage demand and data centers. Other names that are overbought according to their RSI of roughly 80 are financials JPMorgan Chase & Co and Goldman Sachs . Here are the most oversold stocks on the Street, meanwhile: Food and beverage stocks Molson Coors , Conagra Brands and Campbell's are considered among the most oversold companies. Molson Coors is the most oversold with an RSI of 18.3. The stock lost 1.3% this week, and it's down more than 17% year to date. Bank of America downgraded the name to neutral from buy this week. The firm cited ongoing market share loss within the U.S. beer industry and said that the stock's "valuation reflects uncertainty." Other oversold stocks are retailers Ross Stores and Lululemon Athletica , which have RSIs of 24.3 and 29, respectively. Lululemon earlier this month exceeded fiscal first-quarter earnings expectations but cut its earnings guidance for the full year.
