Charles Leclerc crashes out of Canada first practice as Max Verstappen sets pace
Verstappen, who is a point away from a one-race ban following his collision with Mercedes' George Russell at the recent Spanish Grand Prix, ended the session just 0.039 seconds clear of Williams driver Alex Albon.
Carlos Sainz finished third in the other Williams with Russell fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth. Lando Norris was only seventh while his McLaren team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri finished down the order in 14th.

Verstappen, who heads into this weekend's race 49 points behind Piastri in the standings, produced the quickest time in the opening action of the weekend at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to lay down an early marker.
But Leclerc's preparations for the 10th round of the campaign were dealt a blow when he suffered a heavy accident with just nine laps on the board.
The Monegasque crashed into the barrier on the entry to turn four and sustained significant damage to the left-hand side of his Ferrari. The force of the impact sent him sideways and across the other side of the chicane.
'F***,' said Leclerc on the radio. 'Sorry, I am in the wall. My bad. I should have gone straight but I thought I would make the corner and I hit the wall.'
Leclerc's Ferrari mechanics will now face a race against time to ensure his car is ready for the concluding practice session of the day which begins at 17:00 local time (22:00 BST).
The session was red-flagged for eight minutes as Leclerc's stricken Ferrari was retrieved and repairs to the barriers were completed.
As Verstappen launched his Red Bull to the top of the order, Norris appeared to be struggling with the handling of his McLaren and finished 0.458 seconds behind the Dutchman.
Piastri, who has won five of the nine rounds so far and leads Norris by 10 points, was even further back, one second off Verstappen's pace.
The British team were experimenting with a new front wing and will be expected to improve in the day's second session.

George Russell snatched pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix at the last, knocking Max Verstappen off the top of the timesheets. Oscar Piastri was third quickest behind them but Lando Norris had to settle for just seventh on the grid. Norris was quickest in final practice but couldn't find his groove and never looked likely to be in the fight for pole. And so it proved with the Brit some way off the pace and team-mate Piastri also unable to secure top spot. News came shortly after the start of qualifying that Yuki Tsunoda had been handed a 10-place grid drop for ignoring red flags in practice. That meant he needed to make it to Q3 to have any hope of avoiding being last on the grid and cleared the first hurdle at least. Not so luck was Carlos Sainz, who suffered a shock Q1 exit though it soon became clear why. Replays showed he had been impeded significantly by Isack Hadjar during his final flying lap, with a grid penalty likely coming for the Frenchman, though that will not make the Williams driver he got in the way of feel much better. Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson were also very frustrated to have been eliminated in a very tight Q1, with just eight-tenths of a second covering the whole grid. Lance Stroll could only manage to go 18th fastest in his hometown, while Gabriel Bortoleto was the other driver stuck in the bottom five. A bizarre moment saw the session red-flagged when the engine cover came off Alex Albon's car during that first part of qualifying. He was able to make it back to the garage to have another fitted and, crucially, went quick enough to avoid an early exit along with his team-mate. Tsunoda's quest to avoid being marooned in last place on the grid failed as he was quick enough only for 11th on the road, before that 10-place drop was applied. So Franco Colapinto would inherit 11th on the grid from the Japanese with Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman the others out at the end of Q2. ---

Atletico Madrid are reportedly keen to land the Scotland skipper this summer and with Robertson in the last year of his Anfield contract and Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez about to arrive as Arne Slot 's new left back, the 31-year-old might recognise it as a good time to bow out. Talks have taken place over a new deal but Robertson admits his future remains far from certain. A switch to the Spanish capital would put him back in best mate Trent Alexander-Arnold's orbit as well after the right back made his move to Real Madrid this summer - a move which did not go down well with the red half of Merseyside. Robertson is held in high regard by both club and fans in the city, having arrived for a bargain fee from Hull City and helped deliver one Champions Leagues, two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup. First of all, fans will be annoyed at not getting to give Robertson a proper send off after seven years as a red. Secondly, and perhaps more worryingly, it would leave Liverpool needing to retain their league crown in a way they;ve never done before. That's because the club have never won one without at least one Scot in their squad. Going back to the turn of the last century, the squad that claimed the club's first ever championship in 1900/01 had more Scottish players than any other nationality, with nine making up the bulk of the team. The class of 05/06 was down to just five, before going back-to-back in 1921/22 and 22/22 with three players from north of the border. The 1946/47 champions featured five Scots and then one more 20 years later when they were champions again. They were back down to three in 1972/73 and just two a couple of years later in Peter Cormack and Brian Hall. Cormack was the sole Scot in 76/77, but the club's domination of English football was just beginning and Scottish stars would be at the heart of it. 78/79 was the first title winning campaign featuring Graeme Souness and Kenny Dalglish and from then on, Liverpool never looked back. Seven league crowns went to Anfield in the next ten years, with the likes of Alan Hansen, Frank McGarvey, Steve Nicol, John McGregor, Gary Gilespie, John Wark, Kevin MacDonald and Alan Irvine all playing their part in various victorious campaigns until Robertson continued the incredible run two decades later. Ben Doak remains on the Anfield books so technically, the Scottish safety net is still there, although after spending last season on loan at Middlesbrough and recent injury problems, his invovlementin Slot's first team plans is far from certain.
