Lamine Yamal stars in six-goal Champions League thriller between Barcelona and Inter Milan
Barcelona and Inter Milan shared a compelling 3-3 draw in a high-octane Champions League semi-final first leg clash on Wednesday.
The Italian side raced into a two-goal lead with superb strikes from Marcus Thuram and Denzel Dumfries, before the unstoppable Lamine Yamal pulled Barca back into it with a sublime solo effort.
Ferran Torres levelled for the five-time champions and although Inter nosed ahead through Dumfries again, a Yann Sommer own goal left the tie on a knife-edge at the halfway stage.
Inter were desperately hoping Thuram would be fit to play after a thigh injury and he showed precisely why, scoring the fastest ever Champions League semi-final goal after 30 seconds.
Barcelona's Copa del Rey final winning goalscorer Jules Kounde hacked a poor clearance to the edge of the box, and Inter capitalised.
Dutch wide man Dumfries aimed a low cross towards Thuram and Inigo Martinez slipped at just the wrong time, allowing the France striker room to finish with an impudent back-heel flick.
30 seconds is all it takes Inter to hit the back of the net 🤯

Quadruple-chasing Barcelona seized control and pushed forward, roared on by a nervous 50,000 strong Olympic stadium crowd.
Yamal, on his 100th Barcelona appearance, appealed for a penalty after he was shoved by Alessandro Bastoni and then set up Torres, who fired wide.
The Spaniard, standing in for Barca's injured top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski, lashed a volley narrowly off target.
Against the run of play Inter, whose treble hopes crumbled after three consecutive domestic defeats prior, scored their second, with another fine finish.
Francesco Acerbi nodded on a corner and Dumfries reached the dropping ball first to score with a stunning acrobatic effort.
Another outrageous finish from Inter ðŸ'¥ This time coming from Denzel Dumfries!

Barcelona teams over the past few years may have crumbled but Hansi Flick's youthful side are not burdened by the series of European failures since they last won the competition in 2015.
Least of all teenage wizard Yamal, who pulled Barcelona back into the game just three minutes later with a wonderful individual goal that made him the youngest player ever to score in the semis.

On the eve of the game the Spaniard rejected comparisons to all-time Barca great Lionel Messi, but his goal was straight from the Argentine's playbook.
Yamal shook off Thuram, floated inside from the right flank and past Henrikh Mkhitaryan into the box, drawing defenders towards him but before they could stop him, stroked an inch-perfect shot in off the left post.
Minutes later Yamal nearly repeated the trick. This time he darted outside, pausing to let Federico Dimarco lunge past him and off the pitch.
From a tight angle the youngster flashed a shot that Sommer tipped onto the crossbar.
High on confidence Yamal set up further chances for Torres and Dani Olmo that went begging, before Barca pulled level.
Pedri hooked a ball into the area for Raphinha to head across goal and Torres to convert from close range after 38 breathless minutes.
Kounde limped off before half-time in a blow for Barca, who also replaced the inexperienced Gerard Martin with Ronald Araujo at the break.
A classic team effort to level the game 😬

Dimarco hammered over early in the second half before Simone Inzaghi hooked him, after a torrid night up against the relentless Yamal.
Inter took the sting out of the game early in the second half and then sucker-punched Barca, scoring from another corner, with Dumfries' header bouncing in off Olmo.
Barcelona equalised within two minutes, with Yamal stepping over a corner on the edge of the box, allowing it to run to Raphinha.
This game keeps on giving 🤯 Raphinha launches this rocket to level again!

The Brazilian's rasping effort smashed against the crossbar and then in, off the back of the unfortunate diving Sommer's head.
Pau Cubarsi made a vital recovery tackle to stop Thuram after he got in behind Barcelona's high line, and Mkhitaryan had a goal ruled out for an extremely tight offside.
Yamal looped a second strike onto the crossbar late on but the sides could not be separated.
The second leg takes place in Milan next Tuesday, with the winner to face Paris Saint-Germain or Arsenal on May 31 in the Munich final.rbs/jc

Eight is great as Dutch dish out World Cup demolition
Memphis Depay has tied the scoring record for the Netherlands men's national team with two goals in the side's 8-0 World Cup qualifying win over Malta. In another key match-up, Finland beat Poland 2-1 in a game that had a lengthy delay because of a medical emergency. Depay scored in the ninth and 16th minutes for his 49th and 50th goals for the Netherlands at Euroborg Stadium in Groningen on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST). In doing so he equalled the Dutch record set by team great Robin van Persie. Depay hit 50 goals in his 102nd game for the Netherlands, while van Persie's 50th came in his 101st game in 2015. Finland's game against Poland in Helsinki was suspended because of a medical emergency in the stadium with Finland leading 2-1. The game later resumed and the home side hung on for the win. It was Poland's first game since star Robert Lewandowski vowed he will not play for the country again under coach Michal Probierz, who stripped the Barcelona striker of the captaincy. It followed Lewandowski's decision not to make himself available for the game against Finland and last week's friendly against Moldova. Finland lead Group G by a point from the Netherlands, but have played two more games. Poland dropped from first to third. The top team in each group qualifies automatically for next year's World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico. The second-placed team goes into play-offs. In other World Cup qualifiers in Europe, Austria beat San Marino 4-0, Romania won 2-0 against Cyprus, Serbia beat Andorra 3-0, and Latvia and Albania fought out a 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, Chile will miss their third straight World Cup after losing 2-0 at Bolivia on Tuesday to remain last in South America's 10-team round-robin competition. Bolivia kept their hopes alive for an inter-continental play-off spot in a bid to reach the 2026 tournament. The top six teams in South American qualifying secure direct berths in the World Cup. Defending champions Argentina have already qualified. Bolivia opened the scoring through Miguel Terceros in the fifth minute and added a second in the 90th from Enzo Monteiro at the 4150-metre high El Alto Stadium, outside La Paz. The hosts now have 17 points to put pressure on Venezuela, who have 18 and will play later at Uruguay. Both are fighting for seventh place, which secures the inter-continental play-off spot. Sixth-placed Colombia have 21 points.

Goldfields product tipped for lucrative Italian contract
Goldfields-born water polo star Luke Pavillard is set to continue his decorated career with Pro Recco as the Italian powerhouse looks to bolster its ranks after a long line of departures. Pavillard has been linked to Pro Recco since early this year after an official contract offer. The 29-year-old is not on Pro Recco's 2025 team list and club officials have yet to confirm any incoming reinforcements. However, a European source last week reported Pavillard would be among the star non-European replacements for up to seven departures that include fellow Australian Aaron Younger. Founded in 1913, Pro Recco has won the lucrative Champions League a record 11 times. Pavillard was last year among the best performers in national men's team the Aussie Sharks that finished eighth at the Paris Olympics by scoring 14 goals in seven games. He also boasts a gold medal and a silver medal playing for Australia in tournaments dating back to 2017 and 2022, respectively. The Aussie Sharks have been in the US training with the American team before heading to similar camps in Thailand alongside the Croatian and Serbian national teams. Serbia are the reigning Olympic champions, with the Asian camps considered vital lead-ups for the Sharks ahead of the World Cup that starts in Singapore on July 12. Pavillard took up water polo in Perth during his early teens thanks to the influence of his father Hugh. Hugh Pavillard arrived in the Goldfields in the mid-1980s and was a key figure when water polo was among the biggest participation sports at the old Lord Forrest Olympic Pool. It included a mid-1990s stint on the State League roster of the now-defunct Goldfields Vikings. After the family left the region in about 1998, a young Luke began his water polo journey with the Melville Sharks at the Bicton Baths. He missed selection for the Tokyo Olympics, but moved into the professional ranks with a three-year contract with Barceloneta in the Champions League.
