Texas fires coach Rodney Terry after Longhorns make another quick exit from NCAA Tournament

Yahoo23-03-2025
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The University of Texas fired basketball coach Rodney Terry on Sunday after a disappointing first season in the Southeastern Conference and another quick exit from the NCAA Tournament.
The move comes two years after Terry led Texas to the Elite Eight in the 2022-2023 season when, as an assistant coach, he took over the program at midseason after then-coach Chris Beard was arrested on a felony family violence charge and was fired. The charge against Beard was later dismissed.
Terry's ability to keep the team together and thrive amid the turmoil saw Texas win the Big 12 Conference Tournament, then make its deepest run in the NCAA Tournament since 2008. He was rewarded with the full-time job and a five-year, $15 million contract.
But duplicating anything close to that success was a struggle, and he was fired with three years left on his deal. Terry was 40-29 in his two full seasons as head coach.
'My philosophy has always been to wait until the end of the season and review every facet of our program before making any final decisions, and we've been doing that since our heartbreaking First Four loss in the NCAA Tournament," athletic director Chris Del Conte said in a statement. 'In looking at everything over the past three seasons, our first year in the SEC this past year, and where we're headed in the future, Coach Terry and I have decided it is in the best interest of The University of Texas to move in a different direction.'
Texas joined the SEC in 2024 and started this season ranked No. 19. But the Longhorns lost their season opener and were unranked by the following week. Conference play started with a 0-3 skid as Texas played three straight opponents ranked in the Top 10.
The Longhorns lost seven of their last nine games in the regular season and went 6-12 in league play despite having the SEC scoring leading Tre Johnson, who was named conference freshman of the year.
Texas still earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament behind two strong victories in the conference tournament but only as an 11-seed, forced to win a play-in game to join the final 64 teams playing for the national championship.
Texas' season ended when the Longhorns blew a 13-point lead in a 86-80 loss to Xavier and finished 19-16 overall. Texas lost in the second round of the tournament last year.
'It was a dream of mine to be the head coach of the Longhorns, and I've been able to live that dream,' Terry said in a statement released by the school. 'I'll forever be a Longhorn.'
Terry struggled to stitch together cohesive rosters in the new era of the open transfer portal and players earning money for their name, image and likeness. While he signed Johnson, who likely will be a high NBA draft pick this summer, other top recruits have not flocked to the Texas campus.
Before his first full season, top recruits Ron Holland and A.J. Johnson both turned pro instead of playing for Texas, and Terry had no top high school players set to join the Longhorns next season.

Eight Florida Gators named to 2025 Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team

The 2025 edition of the coaches' preseason All-SEC Teams was released on Tuesday and included eight members of Florida football's roster for the upcoming campaign. Redshirt senior offensive linemen Jake Slaughter and Austin Barber both earned first-team honors to lead the Gators, while redshirt senior defensive lineman Caleb Banks, senior kicker Trey Smack, and redshirt senior long-snapper Rocco Underwood were second-team mentions. Sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Eugene Wilson III and edge defender Tyreak Sapp round out the nominations on the third team. For Slaughter, this is his seventh first-team nomination and second for an All-SEC first team while Barber earned his second preseason All-SEC first-team nomination after being named to the media's first-team selection following SEC Media Days. Banks earned his third preseason All-SEC second-team honors entering his third season in Gainesville, Smack got his second preseason All-SEC second-team call for both the place kicker and kickoff specialist positions, and Underwood also earned his second All-SEC second-team nomination following his Patrick Mannelly Award-winning campaign in 2024. Lagway got his first All-SEC honor after not being chosen by the media following SEC Media Days while Wilson, who is coming off a season-ending injury last fall, is looking to pick up where he left off. Sapp was named to the preseason Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List following a season in which he led the Gators with seven sacks and 13 tackles-for-loss for 48 yards while tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles. Matthew and Camilla McConaughey tee up tequila deal with New York Mets

Matthew McConaughey – regularly spotted on the sidelines of University of Texas football games – makes it no secret he loves sports. The Texas alum, who is also the Longhorns "Minister of Culture," is now pitching Pantalones Organic Tequila, the brand he and his wife Camila Alves McConaughey co-founded, to sports teams. Earlier this year, Pantalones became the official tequila of Major League Soccer's Austin FC (McConaughey is also a part owner of the soccer team). Now, Pantalones is heading to the big leagues of baseball, becoming the official organic tequila of the New York Mets, the brand announced Wednesday, Aug. 20. Watch video: SUV crashes into restaurant during food influencers' review Pantalones will be served at Citi Field, becoming the only organic tequila available at the stadium. Fans can sip the spirit in a new cocktail called the Citi Field Sunset, made with Pantalones Organic Tequila, orange juice, lime juice, cranberry juice, and topped with a cherry and orange garnish. You can also order the tequila in other cocktails at the stadium. The McConaugheys have had fun with their tequila brand. "No. The world doesn't need another celebrity Tequila," they said on the company's website when they debuted Pantalones nearly two years ago (and the comment is still there). But goodness gracious the Tequila industry sure could use a shot of fun. And that's exactly what Pantalones is: Really good, really clean fun." Back in November 2024, the couple released a new Pantalones ad spoofing the film "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," the 2003 film starring McConaughey and Kate Hudson. In the ad entitled, "How to Lose Your Pants in 10 Ways," Alves wears a dress similar to the one Hudson wore in the movie's official poster. McConaughy is shown without pants with his lower body pixelated. The couple have released several on-brand photos and social media posts regarding the lack of pants ("pantalones" is Spanish for "pants") since launching Pantalones with a commercial in which they McConaughey calls the tequila, "Quite possibly the best thing Camila and I have made with our pants on." CBS Sports makes 'bold prediction' for Alabama football in Year 2 under Kalen DeBoer

Year 2 is always an important year for any college football coach at a Power Four program, especially one at a school as rich in tradition as the Alabama Crimson Tide. Kalen DeBoer is hoping his 2025 Alabama team, ranked No. 8 in both the preseason top 25 polls, avenges a four-loss campaign from last year and, at a minimum, returns to the College Football Playoff. Many analysts, including Fox Sports' Joel Klatt, ESPN's Mark Schlabach and others, believe they will. With kicking less than two weeks away, it's the time of year when the sport's top "insiders" lend themselves to bold predictions for the upcoming season. CBS Sports' Chip Patterson did the same with regard to Alabama in 2025: Patterson believes the Crimson Tide will win the SEC championship on December 6 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. In CBS' annual "SEC expert picks," Patterson said: "Big bodies still matter in college football, and Alabama has plenty of them -- experienced, well-developed linemen forged in one of the country's premier NFL-talent incubators. Kalen DeBoer arrived relatively late in the cycle and inherited a significant roster exodus after Nick Saban's departure. Now, with a full year to settle in, the return of offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, and a roster reshaped in his image, 2025 should be the first fair look at the DeBoer era. For a coach who has won at every level, it was never a matter of if but when he'd have Alabama competing for championships. The pieces are in place for that to happen this fall." After SEC media days wrapped up in July, the Texas Longhorns were named the runaway favorite to win the conference champion with 96 first-place votes. Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs received the second-most first-place votes (44) by media members, while Alabama placed a distant third with 29 first-place votes. Patterson explained why he likes Alabama's chances to win the SEC this year. In short, it's the defense. "Alabama will have a top-five scoring defense nationally. The Crimson Tide have a pretty high floor when it comes to this category, annually ranking inside the top-20 and usually inside the top-15, but it's been a while since we looked to Tuscaloosa to find one of the country's truly dominant units. Alabama is old, big and experienced up front, and after the secondary had to grow up a bit, that side of the ball is looking like a real strength in 2025." It's been a while since Alabama went back-to-back years without an SEC championship. Since Nick Saban's first conference title at Alabama in 2009, the Crimson Tide have gone more than one year in between SEC crowns just once: in 2010 and '11. In 2011, Alabama played for the national championship anyway and mauled LSU in a 21-0 shutout. The Tide may not be the preseason favorite on everyone's ballots, but no one should be dismissing their chances outright. Alabama football schedule 2025 Alabama's season opener against Florida State at Doak Campbell is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on Aug. 30. The game will be televised on ABC.
