Bengaluru Commuters Slam Uber For Up To 70 Percent Fare Hike Amid Monsoon Chaos
According to the authorities, the city might see some more pre-Monsoon showers due to cyclonic formations over the Andaman Sea.
Bengaluru, the Silicon Valley of India, is currently on high alert due to heavy overnight rains on Monday. It triggered severe waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city, leaving residents stranded and struggling to book cabs and autorickshaws to commute. Amid the chaos, Uber, the popular cab-hailing service app, is being questioned for charging extremely high fares from passengers.
Taking to X, a user shared his shocking experience of booking a cab via Uber for a mere 12km distance. He slammed the app, calling them 'Mafias' for charging him high fares during the heavy rainfall, as he and his family were stuck in the rain with a small kid.
Sharing a screenshot of the prices shown in the application, the user wrote, 'Why such high prices? @Uber_India If a family is stuck in the rain with a small kid, is this what we expect from you? This is beyond shameless monopoly and utter nonsense. For 12 km in rain, how much can you charge? Humanity is lost. Bangalore traffic and then these mafias."
Going by the picture, for a 12km ride in Bengaluru, the app was showing a fare of Rs 1314 for the UberXL, while the basic UberGo was charging Rs 810 and Uber Premiere at Rs 967. The Uber Go Sedan, on the other hand, costs Rs 826.
In no time, the comment section was flooded with reactions from several users. While many lashed out at the company for high prices, others said it was 'justified.'
An X user commented, 'This is a normal thing for @Uber_India @rapidobikeapp in rain, they keep increasing the prices, they have no shame in hiking prices which are not at all justifiable, and the sad part is the govt is not even looking into these things." Another one wrote, 'Boycott Uber."
According to the authorities, the city might see some more pre-monsoon showers due to cyclonic formations over the Andaman Sea. Due to the heavy rainfall and flooded roads, many tech companies have asked their employees to work from home.
Notably, Bengaluru's cab prices have been a topic of discussion, and recent government laws aimed to establish a more standard and stable fare structure. The city's reputation for high taxi fares, especially in the ride-sharing industry, is due to factors such as heavy traffic, which can increase travel time and distance, and the dynamic pricing models used by certain apps.
Last year, the Karnataka transport department implemented the One City, One Fare policy, which aims to standardise taxi pricing throughout the city, including those provided by ride-hailing applications such as Ola and Uber.

Metro Rail tickets can now be booked via Uber mobile app
Chennai Metro Rail commuters who book their tickets through Uber mobile app will get a 50% discount for a month. Additionally, those who book a ride to or from Metro Rail stations, on Uber Auto or Uber Moto, will get another 50% off up to ₹20. During the launch of this initiative, M.A. Siddique, managing director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited, said the move would benefit thousands of passengers. 'They get one more option of buying a ticket. We want the tickets to be available on as many platforms as possible for the convenience of commuters. We are expanding rapidly, and will change the way people commute in Chennai,' he said. Manikandan Thangarathnam, senior director, mobility and platforms, Uber, said this was a crucial step towards creating a seamless multimodal integration. 'For a passenger, metro is only one leg of his journey. To come to the station, they walk or take an auto. But now we can cover the first and second leg of the journey [in one click with a single payment]. This [move] builds the foundation for people to plan the journey in a single click. That's the experience we want to create,' he said. However, he said that they had to solve some real time variables such as traffic, availability of vehicles, and weather, which determined the time and pricing, and it involved a lot of machine learning and AI algorithms.

Lyft misses quarterly revenue estimates on competition, weak US travel demand
Lyft missed second-quarter revenue estimates on Wednesday, pressured by mounting competition from Uber and softening U.S. travel demand, sending its shares down 7 per cent in after-hours trading. Larger rival Uber Technologies, which offers ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery business globally, beat revenue estimates and issued an upbeat forecast for the third-quarter earlier in the day. Demand for travel to the U.S. has fallen this year, and analysts expect the slump to continue through 2025 as economic uncertainty, trade tensions and visa backlogs make the country less appealing to international visitors. Lyft, which is expanding beyond its North America, posted revenue of $1.59 billion in the second quarter, missing estimates of $1.61 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Rides on its platform grew 14 per cent to a record high of 234.8 million, slightly below estimates of 235.9 million, according to 27 analysts polled by Visible Alpha. Lyft recently completed its nearly $200 million acquisition of European mobility platform FreeNow and has signed a deal with China's Baidu to introduce the search engine giant's robotaxis in the region. Meanwhile, Uber, which has 20 global partnerships for self-driving technology, said it was in talks with private equity firms and banks to finance the deployment of robotaxis. Lyft on Wednesday also announced a partnership, set to launch later this year, with United Airlines that will allow the carrier's customers to earn rewards on all Lyft rides. With partnerships including DoorDash and Chase already in place, Lyft's entry into Europe positions the company to extend such collaborations into international markets. Lyft said it expects gross bookings to be between $4.65 billion and $4.80 billion for the third quarter, well above estimates of $4.59 billion. The company also reported earnings of 10 cents per share for the June quarter, more than double analysts' expectations of 4 cents. With growth stagnating in major U.S. metros, ride-hailing companies are shifting their focus to medium and smaller car-dependent cities to tap into new markets and drive revenue. Lyft recorded an adjusted core earnings of $129.4 million in the second quarter, above the average estimate of $124.5 million. It forecast current-quarter core earnings of $125 million to $145 million, largely in line with Wall Street estimates.
