Rental cabs, their drivers responsible for road accidents in Goa: Minister

Panaji, Jul 29 (PTI) The 'Rent-a-Cab' vehicles were in excess in Goa and road accidents were being caused by their drunk and untrained drivers, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has informed the assembly.
Godinho also said nearly 95 per cent of Goans want mobile app-based taxi services in the coastal state.
Bringing taxis on online platforms will benefit customers and also the owners of these vehicles, he said in the House late Monday evening during demands for grants for his department.
The minister said the Rent-a-Cab vehicles were in excess in Goa, which is the main reason for accidents and loss of lives on roads in the state.
'The rent-a-cab vehicles go berserk. There are too many such rental cars. Road accidents are caused because of them," he said.
Drunk and untrained drivers of these cabs cause accidents, the minister added.
He also said the state government recently published the Goa Transport Aggregators' Guidelines to bring all the taxis on online platforms.
The decision was taken after the survey conducted by the state government indicated that 95 per cent of the people wanted the taxi service to be available on mobile application, he said.
The guidelines have been kept for the public scrutiny and the state government will take the decision on it only after consulting all the MLAs and the taxi operators, he said.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will soon call for a meeting to discuss and resolve the issue, Godinho said. PTI RPS GK

Speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, Gen Dwivedi described future battlefields as ones 'where boots must share space with bots.' He was addressing a session on ' Operation Sindoor – A New Chapter in India's Fight Against Terrorism', and used the occasion to highlight India's evolving military doctrine and readiness. Describing Operation Sindoor as a turning point, Gen Dwivedi said it was an 'intelligence-driven response that redefined India's counter-terrorism doctrine.' As per news agency PTI, he stated that the 88-hour tri-services operation was 'unprecedented in scale, range, depth and strategic impact,' compelling Pakistan to seek a ceasefire within that window. He said it was executed across the DIME spectrum, referring to diplomatic, informational, military and economic efforts. Gen Dwivedi underscored the military's commitment to self-reliance through collaborations under national technology missions like 'INDIAai', 'Chip-to-Startup', and 'Project QuILA', with Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE), Mhow, as a strategic partner. According to PTI, he also appreciated innovation-led efforts of Indian Army cells at institutions such as IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur and IISc-Bengaluru. He noted that programmes like Project SAMBHAV and additive manufacturing partnerships with Army Base Workshops are 'setting new benchmarks' in applied defence technology. 'Trump in high heels': Rep Nancy Mace joins race for South Carolina governor; positions herself as President's strongest ally
Republican Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina officially launched her campaign for governor on Monday, entering a crowded GOP primary where candidates are vying for the coveted endorsement of US President Donald Trump. While her opponents tout their connections to Trump, Mace- who describes herself as 'Trump in high heels'- says she's the one best equipped to carry out his agenda in South Carolina, where he continues to hold strong support among Republican voters. Mace made her run official during a campaign event at The Citadel military college in Charleston, the same institution where she made history as the first woman to graduate. She plans to begin a statewide town hall tour this week, starting in Myrtle Beach. 'I'm running for governor because South Carolina doesn't need another empty suit and needs a governor who will fight for you and your values,' Mace said as quoted by Wate News. 'South Carolina needs a governor who will drag the truth into sunlight and flip the tables if that's what it takes.' In an interview with The Associated Press, Mace outlined her campaign priorities. Though she worked for his 2016 campaign, she later criticised him after the January 6 Capitol riot — prompting him to support a primary challenger against her in 2022. Mace ultimately won reelection and went on to receive Trump's endorsement in her 2024 campaign. 'I'm going to draw the line, and I'm going to hold it for South Carolina, and I'm going to put her people first,' Mace said as quoted by Wate News. Mace, 47, briefly served in the South Carolina House before flipping the state's 1st congressional district in 2020. She also made history as the first Republican woman elected to Congress from South Carolina. Her father served as commandant of cadets at The Citadel during her time there.
