Mariners reliever Trent Thornton carted off field after injury coming off mound in 9th inning
Thornton was using crutches to get around the Mariners' locker room after the game and the team did not have an official diagnosis of the lower left leg injury he sustained on the grounder hit by Adolis Garcia with two outs.
Thornton said he feared it was a significant Achilles injury and that he would have an MRI on Friday.
'It's probably the Achilles, but that's just speculation, so I'll find out tomorrow,' Thornton said. 'Very frustrating.'
Thornton entered the game to start the eighth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. The right-hander then had a full count on Garcia before the righty hitter hit a grounder on his 95 mph fastball on the lower outside corner.
'I threw the pitch, and as soon as I turned, I thought I broke the guy's bat and it hit me in the back of the leg, and I fell,' Thornton said.
Thornton said his first reaction at that point was to try to look at his leg to see what had happened.
'I tried to get up and just couldn't even put pressure on it at all,' Thornton said. 'It didn't hurt. It's just achy and numb. But I guess I don't know. I'm still trying to process this a little bit, and I'll find out more tomorrow.'
Mariners manager Dan Wilson said he thought Thornton pitched 'fabulous' before the injury.
'We'll find out more tonight,' Wilson said. 'Hoping for the best.'

I like volume and Pollard was ninth in the NFL in touches last season. My Kenneth Walker III exposure can't be denied, as he's been a staple of securing a deep backfield. Even with Zach Charbonnet behind him, Walker remains Seattle's top option and explosive playmaker. To complement the RB stack, I took a risk on rookie Tet McMillan in Round 6 — a lesser-known commodity relative to other vets going in this range. I'm lukewarm on Kyle Pitts Sr. However, Darnell Mooney is hurt and the early camp buzz is that Pitts and Michael Penix Jr. are vibing. I understand if he's dead to you, but he's talented and comes at an affordable price. Finally, I picked up one of my favorite backups in Jordan Mason. Rounds 11–15: Value mixed with fliers 11.03 – Cooper Kupp (SEA – WR)12.10 – Tank Bigsby (JAX – RB)13.03 – Baltimore (BAL – DEF)14.10 – Harrison Butker (KC – K)15.03 – Anthony Richardson Sr. (IND – QB) Roster assessment following Round 15 Even if Kupp is somewhat washed, the cost is cheap. Despite the injuries, Kupp still averaged 11 FPPG last year — not bad for a bench piece. Tank Bigsby gave me more RB insurance with touchdown potential and upside if Travis Etienne Jr. falls flat. Lastly, I grabbed Anthony Richardson Sr. in Round 15, a dual-threat quarterback who could explode if he stays healthy. Worst case, I drop him. Best case, he or Dak become tradeable assets to a squad struggling with stability at QB. Key Takeaways I was deliberate about building around six offenses — Bengals, Chargers, Titans, Cowboys, Cardinals and Dolphins. I drafted players from four of those teams, shaping this roster into one of my most balanced so far. I've noticed that at least six or seven RBs are continually getting drafted in the first round. That RB scarcity can get real, so I've made a note to grab at least one in my first three picks. I waited on QB and I got in at the right time because eight QBs were selected across Round 8 and 9 (I got Dak at the end of the 8th round). One of these times, I'll commit to a TE earlier because the pool beyond Round 8 is rough. That's an area I need to work on going forward. My wideouts are ok, not great but more than manageable given my depth at other positions.

Notre Dame transfer wide receiver Malachi Fields named to Biletnikoff Award watch list
Add another preseason accolade to the list for Notre Dame football players ahead of the upcoming season. Virginia transfer wide receiver Malachi Fields is one of 47 preseason watch list members for the 2025 Biletnikoff Award, which is given to college football's best receiver regardless of position. The senior arrived in South Bend via the Cavaliers, where he ranked tied for seventh in the nation among all FBS players in consecutive games with a reception (27). He has played in 36 career games, recording 129 catches for 1,849 yards and 11 touchdowns. Fields had a couple of standout performances in 2024, including career highs of 11 receptions and 148 yards at Wake Forest; scoring twice on four receptions and 65 yards at Coastal Carolina; and scoring the go-ahead touchdown in a four-catch, 63-yard performance at Boston College. Notre Dame has had one prior winner of the Biletnikoff Award: Wide receiver Golden Tate in 2009. Fighting Irish wide receivers Jeff Samardzija (2005-06) and Michael Floyd (2010-11) were also finalists for the award. Hughes on team news and player decisions ahead of Blues' opening game
Mark Hughes has suggested that Carlisle United's recent injury absentees are likely to miss out on the opening game of the season. But the head coach has suggested that sidelined players are not far away from returning to action. Hughes gave a limited update on the injury front two days ahead of Carlisle's first National League game at Woking on Saturday. Asked about players who have missed recent pre-season action, the head coach said: 'Some of them are behind, not to any great extent, only maybe a week behind, but for the most part the squad's fit and healthy, apart from the ones that haven't been available to in the pre-season period. 'There hasn't been any great change from the last couple of weeks, really. 'We're pretty much where we were last week.' Players such as Morgan Feeney and Jordan Jones have not featured at all in pre-season, with others such as Stephen Wearne and Josh Grant having also missed recent games. Asked by the News & Star about Feeney's progress, Hughes said: 'He's one of those that is on track. 'He's working on the pitch now, so that's a positive. Touch wood, he hasn't had any setbacks.' Hughes, asked how far away players such as midfielder Grant were from returning, simply said: 'I'll refer you to my previous answer – about the same. A week better than they were a week ago.' Winger Jones, who is said to have suffered pre-season injuries, has also been the subject of speculation from some fans about his future with the Blues. Former Carlisle United captain Huntington confirms Bradford exit Asked if the 30-year-old remained part of his plans, Hughes replied: 'He's injured at the moment, so that's where he finds himself.' The Blues boss, meanwhile, was giving little away on his intentions regarding United's latest trialist, Harvey Macadam. 'I haven't told the group yet – I'll speak to them first and then you'll know very quickly,' he said. United's boss confirmed he was still looking at midfield as an area to strengthen. He did not rule out making 'a couple' more additions to his squad. Hughes said things were 'pretty quiet' on the incoming front at the moment but added that things can always develop quickly. Asked if any positions had been more difficult than others in terms of recruitment, he said: 'No, not really. I think it's not an exact science, recruitment. You have to wait for the apples to fall from the trees sometimes. 'It's about being patient. We've been able to do good early business, with getting Morgs [Feeney] and Regan [Linney] in fairly early. We're really pleased with that bit of business we did early on. 'So we've reaped the benefit, albeit Morgs hasn't had much luck with the injury that he's had, but he's getting better. 'There have been steady additions to the group and I think I'm more than happy with what we've been able to do. We've brought good players in, players that I think will help us this year. 'That's the reason they're here. It's fair to say we've probably got spaces for one or two, but not too many more than that.' Regan Linney: 'I can't wait to score loads of goals for the fans...' Hughes also said a greater focus over the coming weeks would be on reducing the size of a squad he regards as top-heavy in numbers. Asked if United had found it difficult to move players on at this stage, given the contracts and wages some of the squad were on, he said: 'No, it's just the reality. 'It's easier to acquire players than it is sometimes to move them on, when it's probably better for them to leave or it makes more sense to have those spaces in the squad for the players. 'There's lots of things you have to go through for it to be a win-win for everybody.'
