Mozambique Opposition Head Says He And President Agree to Peace

(Bloomberg) -- Mozambique's most prominent opposition leader, who's orchestrated months of demonstrations that have battered the country's economy, said he agreed with the president to end post-election violence that's left hundreds of people dead.

Venâncio Mondlane, who officially came second to the ruling party's Daniel Chapo in October's presidential election, said the two reached a deal-in-principle at a meeting in Maputo, the capital, on Sunday.
'We agreed to end violence immediately — violence against my supporters, violence inflicted upon police officers, members of the ruling party Frelimo, or any other individuals who do not share our ideas,' Mondlane said of the meeting in a livestream late Monday. 'We agreed 100% on that.'
The informal truce marks the most important step in restoring social and political stability in the gas-rich southeast African nation, after months of unprecedented protests against the election that extended the ruling party's five-decade rule. The unrest has unsettled investors and squeezed the government's already tight finances, as the economy shrank in the final quarter of 2024.
While Chapo met other party leaders earlier this month and reached an initial agreement with them over a path to peace, Mondlane's exclusion from those discussions raised doubts over its impact. He's by far the most popular opposition figure, and the driving force behind the protests.
'The significance of Mr. Chapo's meeting with Mr. Mondlane cannot be overstated,' Louw Nel, an analyst at Oxford Economics, said in a note to clients Monday. 'Images of a smiling Mr. Mondlane shaking a smiling Mr. Chapo's hand on Sunday were particularly striking.'

Japan's Largest Companies 2025: Rare Interest Rate Hikes Lead To A Volatile Year

Toyota and other Japanese automakers have been hampered by Trump's tariffs. Getty Images Japan's stock market has been on a roller-coaster ride over the past 12 months. Its benchmark Nikkei index reached an all-time high in July 2024, driven by corporate governance reforms and robust company earnings, then crashed more than 25% in less than four weeks on a surprise interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan. Though the index rebounded shortly after, its gains were trimmed in early 2025 as U.S. President Donald Trump ignited his trade war. Japan has 180 companies on this year's Forbes Global 2000 ranking of the world's largest public corporations, down slightly from 182 in 2024, making it the third most-represented country after the U.S. and China. The list weighs market value, revenue, profit and assets equally, using the latest 12 months of data as of April 25. Toyota Motor, the highest-ranking Japanese company, is in a sector particularly hard hit by Trump's sweeping tariffs. The U.S. in early April imposed a 25% tax on foreign-made cars, followed in early May by the same levy on auto parts, a blow to Japan's mainstay industry and its export-led economy. The world's top-selling carmaker slipped three places to No. 14 after its stock tumbled 22% over the year. Though its revenues and profits in the year through December were roughly flat at $309 billion and $34 billion, respectively, Toyota warned that the tariffs would result in a $1.3 billion hit to operating profit in April and May. Some of Toyota Motor's peers suffered even steeper declines. Nissan Motor, long plagued by deteriorating financials, sank 366 spots to No. 707 after its profit in the 12 months through December plunged 76% to $702.6 million. After the cut-off date for the list, the automaker posted a $4.7 billion loss for the three months ended March. Nissan is struggling to restructure after merger talks with larger rival Honda Motor collapsed in February. The failed tie-up, together with the tariffs, relegated Honda to No. 117 from No. 91 as its stock fell 17% over the year. Mitsubishi Motors, whose biggest shareholder is Nissan, tumbled 379 places to No. 1,562 as its shares skidded almost 10%. Companies in the AI space were a bright spot. Billionaire Masayoshi Son's SoftBank investment powerhouse climbed 331 spots to No. 130 on a 425% surge in 12-month profit through December to $5.6 billion, driven partly by increases in the value of portfolio companies such as ByteDance, the Chinese parent of TikTok. SoftBank is ramping up its AI bet, with plans to invest up to $30 billion in U.S.-based ChatGPT maker OpenAI while also investing $100 billion to build AI infrastructure stateside as part of its Stargate Project joint venture with OpenAI and Oracle. The AI boom also lifted Advantest, the world's largest semiconductor testing equipment maker by market share and a supplier to AI-chip giant Nvidia. It scaled 509 places to No. 1,231 as its profit in the year through March more than doubled to $1.1 billion on a 52% surge in sales to $5.1 billion. Other notable climbers included companies in the defense industry. IHI Corp, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) were among the best performers on the Nikkei over the year as Japan ramped up military spending. IHI, an engineering company that makes everything from turbines for power plants to rocket systems for space travel, debuted on the Global 2000 at No. 1,349 after its stock skyrocketed 176%. A more than doubling in MHI stock elevated the company 75 spots to No. 372 while KHI vaulted 513 places to No. 1,331 on a 52% share increase.

UN agencies say a violence-hit part of South Sudan is on the brink of famine

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — Three United Nations agencies warned on Thursday of looming famine in a conflict-stricken part of South Sudan. People in 11 of 13 counties in South Sudan's Upper Nile state now face emergency levels of hunger, the World Food Program, the U.N. Children's Fund and the Food and Agriculture Organization said in a joint statement. Upper Nile is the scene of fighting between government troops and armed militias that oppose the government of President Salva Kiir. The fighting has escalated in recent months, 'destroying homes, disrupting livelihoods and impeding the delivery of humanitarian aid,' the statement said. Some 32,000 people are in hunger conditions categorized as 'catastrophic,' more than three times the previous projection, it said. Although some other parts of South Sudan are seeing improvements in food security, some 57% of the east African country's 11.5 million people face acute food insecurity. Famine was declared in parts of South Sudan in 2017. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the leading international system to designate hunger crises , considers an area to be in famine when three things occur: 20% of households have an extreme lack of food, or essentially are starving; at least 30% of children suffer from acute malnutrition or wasting, meaning they're too thin for their height; and two adults or four children per every 10,000 people are dying daily of hunger and its complications. The IPC unites experts from more than 20 organizations, including U.N. agencies, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, the European Union, and the World Bank. Nasir, one of the counties facing a famine warning, is a stronghold for anti-government militias and the scene of fighting that has left mounting civilian casualties . 'Once again, we are seeing the devastating impact conflict has on food security in South Sudan,' Mary-Ellen McGroarty, the World Food Program representative in South Sudan, said in the statement by the U.N. agencies. 'Conflict doesn't just destroy homes and livelihoods, it tears communities apart, cuts off access to markets and sends food prices spiraling upward. Long-term peace is essential, but right now, it is critical our teams are able to access and safely distribute food to families caught in conflict in Upper Nile, to bring them back from the brink and prevent famine.' ___ Muhumuza contributed from Kampala, Uganda. The Cost of Living Comfortably in America's 50 Largest Cities

Homeowners in 10 of the nation's largest cities need to earn at least $191,000 annually to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. While nine of these cities are based on the West Coast and the Hawaii-Pacific Islands — not unusual given each region's high cost of living — Americans might not be able to guess which East Coast city requires making more than $217,000 to live comfortably. Discover More: Check Out: To determine the income needed to live comfortably in America's 50 largest cities, GOBankingRates identified the 100 largest U.S. cities by their total population, households and household median income. We kept the top 50 cities for this article with comfortable incomes calculated for homeowners and renters in each city. The average mortgage was calculated using the average home value, assuming a 10% down payment and using the most recent national average 30-year fixed mortgage rate. For renters, the total cost of living was calculated using the average rental cost and average expenditure cost. Using the 50/30/20 finance rule, the total cost of living was doubled to determine the income needed to live comfortably for a homeowner and renter. Irvine, California, ranked first place for the highest comfortable income for homeowners ($326,645) and renters ($130,943) in the nation. The Southern California city's median household income is $129,647, which needs to be more than double the amount for homeowners to live comfortably. Nine of the top 10 cities with the highest comfortable incomes for homeowners are based on the West Coast and the Hawaii-Pacific Islands with one on the East Coast. Irvine aside, these remaining nine include Fremont, California (#2), San Jose, California (#3), San Francisco (#4), Honolulu (#5), San Diego (#6), Arlington, Virginia (#7), Los Angeles (#8), Anaheim, California (#9) and Seattle, Washington (#10). location. First, the largest 100 cities were identified along with their total population, total households, and household median income all sourced from the US Census American Community Survey. The cost of living indexes were sourced from Sperling's BestPlaces and include the grocery, healthcare, housing, utilities, transportation and miscellaneous cost of living indexes. Using the cost of living indexes and the national average expenditure costs, as sourced from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey, the average expenditure cost for each location can be calculated. The livability index was sourced from AreaVibes for each location and included as supplemental information. The average single family home value was sourced from Zillow Home Value Index for April 2025. Using the average single family home value, assuming a 10% down payment, and using the most recent (5/22/25) national average 30-year fixed mortgage rate, as sourced from the Federal Reserve Economic Data, the average mortgage can be calculated. Using the average mortgage and average expenditure costs, the average total monthly and annual cost of living for a homeowner can be calculated. The average rental cost was sourced from Zillow Observed Rental Index for April 2025 and using the average rent cost as well as the average expenditure cost, the total cost of living for a renter can be calculated. Using the 50/30/20 finance rule that says that needs should not exceed 50% of total household income so taking the total cost of living and doubling it will give the income needed to live comfortably for a homeowner and renter. The cities were sorted to show the highest comfortable income needed for a homeowner. All data was collected on and is up to date as of May 28th, 2025.
