WHO says Israeli military 'attacked' its staff residence, warehouse site in Gaza

The World Health Organization has accused the Israeli military of attacking its main warehouse and staff residence in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, on Monday—seriously impacting its ability to operate in the region.
According to the UN agency, three airstrikes hit the WHO staff compound, causing a fire, major structural damage, and putting staff and their families—including children—at risk.
On the same day, Israeli tanks advanced into southern and eastern parts of Deir al-Balah for the first time. The Israeli military reportedly suspects hostages may be held in the area. Shelling struck homes and mosques, killing at least three Palestinians and injuring others, according to local medics.

In a statement, the WHO said Israeli forces entered its premises, forcing women and children to flee on foot amid ongoing hostilities. Male staff and relatives were allegedly handcuffed, stripped, and interrogated at gunpoint.
Two WHO staff members and two family members were detained; three have since been released, while one staff member remains in custody, the agency said in a post on X.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for the immediate release of the detained staff and demanded full protection for all humanitarian personnel.

Deir al-Balah, now crowded with Palestinians displaced by more than 21 months of war, saw hundreds more flee west or south after Israel issued new evacuation orders. The Israeli military said the move aimed to dismantle Hamas's infrastructure and operational capabilities in the area.

Gaza's population of more than two million people is facing severe shortages of food and other essentials, with residents frequently killed as they try to collect humanitarian aid at a handful of distribution points. "Twenty-one children have died due to malnutrition and starvation in various areas across the Gaza Strip," Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza, told reporters. Abu Salmiya said new cases of malnutrition and starvation were arriving at Gaza's remaining functioning hospitals "every moment", warning there could be "alarming numbers" of deaths due to starvation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called Gaza a "horror show" in a speech on Tuesday, with "a level of death and destruction without parallel in recent times". "This is after Israel facilitated the aid entry into Gaza," he wrote on X. The US State Department said later that President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff was heading to the Middle East for talks aimed at finalising a "corridor" for aid to Gaza, without giving further details. - Latest attacks - Earlier Tuesday, Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli strikes had killed 15 people, after the World Health Organization said Israel attacked its facilities amid its expanding ground operations. Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that Israeli strikes on the Al-Shati camp west of Gaza City had killed at least 13 people and wounded more than 50. Most of Gaza's population has been displaced at least once during the conflict and the Al-Shati camp -- on the Mediterranean coast -- hosts thousands of people displaced from the north in tents and makeshift shelters. Chikungunya, for which there is no specific treatment and which is spread primarily by Aedes mosquito species, including the 'tiger mosquito' which also transmits dengue, and Zika, can cause rapid and large outbreaks. 15 Palestinians die of hunger, malnutrition in Gaza in 24 hours
CAIRO/GAZA: A six-week-old infant was among 15 people who have died of starvation in Gaza in the past 24 hours, local health officials said, with malnutrition now killing Palestinians faster than at any point in the 21-month war.
