Pakistan party ends weeks-long protest over arrest of Baloch rights activists
BNP chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal and his supporters have been leading a protest since Mar. 28, days after Dr. Mahrang Baloch, the most prominent rights activist from Balochistan, and others were arrested after they took part in a protest outside the University of Balochistan in the provincial capital of Quetta. Baloch and other activists had been demanding the release of other members of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee rights group, whom they allege have been detained by security agencies.
That demonstration ended in the death of three protesters, according to police documents, and Baloch and others were charged with terrorism, sedition, and murder. The Pakistan army and government have in the past variously referred to Baloch and her BYC as 'terrorist proxies' who are allied with militant separatist groups like the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). The group denies the charge and says it leads peaceful protests for the rights of the Baloch.
'Keeping in mind everything, giving importance to the difficulties of the people, the Balochistan National Party has decided that if the government does not allow us to go to Quetta, we will continue our protest, if not this way, then any other way we deem fit,' Mengal Said at a press conference in Mastung where his party had been holding the sit-in.
He did not elaborate on a future course of action.
The crackdown on BYC leaders followed a deadly train attack in Balochistan last month, in which BLA separatist militants took hundreds of passengers hostage. The army said 23 soldiers, three railway employees and five passengers had died in the attack and rescue mission, which lasted over a day.
Last year, Baloch was barred from traveling to the United States to attend a TIME magazine awards gala after being named on the 2024 TIME100 Next list of 'rising leaders.'
She began her activist career at the age of 16 in 2009 when her father went missing in an alleged 'enforced disappearance.' His body was found two years later. Her BYC says it campaigns against such extrajudicial killings, abductions and other rights abuses against the ethnic Baloch people. The state denies official complicity.
Protests and advocacy among the Baloch are often led by women, who say their male counterparts have suffered the worst in a decades-long state crackdown.
Pakistan has been battling a separatist insurgency in Balochistan for decades, where militants target state forces and foreign nationals in the mineral-rich southwestern province bordering Afghanistan and Iran.

In June, the train narrowly avoided a disaster, when a bogie of its power van derailed near Shikarpur's Mandi Phatak area, according to the APP report. The provincial government has ordered an investigation into Monday's explosion. Pakistan's railway system faces frequent derailments due to poor maintenance and militant attacks targeting rail tracks, especially in Sindh and Balochistan provinces. These incidents underscore an urgent need for infrastructure and security upgrades across the rail network.

Balochistan says provincial action plan against separatists ready amid spike in violence
ISLAMABAD: Amid a renewed wave of separatist violence in Balochistan, Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti said Wednesday a provincial action plan for peace had been formulated, as he warned of the evolving and asymmetric nature of the security threat facing the province. The statement came during the 16th National Workshop on Balochistan in Quetta, where Bugti addressed senior civil and military participants. His remarks followed a recent spike in attacks by ethnic Baloch insurgents, who have escalated their decades-long campaign by launching coordinated strikes on security forces, government officials and non-local workers. The unrest continues despite repeated crackdowns and military operations, complicating stability efforts in a province critical to the multibillion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). 'A provincial action plan for peace in Balochistan has been formed,' Bugti was quoted in an official statement circulated after the event. 'Our response mechanisms have been strengthened, and terrorists cannot hold even an inch of ground permanently.' While acknowledging that the province has long suffered from misgovernance and uneven development, Bugti rejected that unemployment and underdevelopment alone were driving unrest. Cop killed, five security men injured in separate attacks in Pakistan's Balochistan
QUETTA: A policeman was killed and five security men were injured in two separate attacks in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province, provincial authorities said on Friday. In the first incident, unidentified assailants opened fire on a police vehicle in Balochistan's Mastung district, according to provincial government spokesman Shahid Rind. 'One official was martyred and three were injured in the firing,' he said in a statement. 'The injured officials were shifted to hospital for medical assistance.' Security forces reached the site and a search was on for the assailants, according to the spokesman. In another incident, armed men attacked a paramilitary Levies check-post in Sarband area of Mastung and injured two troops, according to a Levies statement. The attackers fled the scene after timely retaliation by Levies personnel. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. Balochistan, Pakistan's largest but most impoverished province, has been the site of a long-running insurgency that has intensified in recent months, with separatist militants attacking security forces, government officials and installations and people from other provinces, particularly Punjab, the country's most populous and prosperous province and a major recruitment base for the military. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) is the strongest of a number of insurgent groups operating in the mineral-rich region bordering Afghanistan and Iran who accuse the central government of stealing their resources to fund development in Punjab. The federal government denies the allegations and says it is working for the uplift of local communities in Balochistan, where China has been building a deep-sea port as part of its Belt and Road Initiative. Earlier this month, dozens of militants armed with guns and rockets stormed Mastung and vandalized a bank, tehsil and other offices, officials said, with a teenager killed and 11 others injured in the attack. On Wednesday, three people were killed and 12 others sustained injuries in Balochistan's Kalat district after unidentified men opened fire on a passenger bus headed toward Quetta, according to officials. The attack followed a similar assault on passenger buses in which armed men kidnapped and killed nine passengers, who hailed from the eastern Punjab province.
