The Scottish town set for a new Aldi as seaside spot branded 'priority location'
Aldi is expanding its UK portfolio by announcing a list of 20 potential locations for new stores. Included among them was one much-loved Scottish seaside town.
The budget German supermarket has revealed that Largs in North Ayrshire is one of its "priority locations", as it seeks sites for new stores in a multi-million pound investment to bring its budget prices to more people.
According to Aldi, the potential location for a new site should be able to accommodate a 20,000 sqft store with around 100 parking spaces, with access to a main road that offers good access and visibility being desirable.
As the UK's fourth largest supermarket, the discounted retailer currently operates more than 1,050 stores across the UK, with 109 based in Scotland alone.
However, the firm has set its sights on expanding even further, as it has invested £650million this year alone into opening new stores, with a long-term goal of 1,500 overall.
And Largs, known for its Viking history as well as top class ice cream and fish and chips, appears earmarked for one of the new sites, providing a suitable spot can be found in the town.
Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: "We want to make high-quality, affordable food accessible to everyone, and that means opening new stores in the communities that need them most.
"The response from the public has been invaluable in helping us identify where demand is greatest, and where we need to focus our efforts on finding the sites that can become new stores."
It comes after it was announced that four Scottish Aldi stores were set for a "refresh" over the summer months, with the move affecting Inverness, Ayr, Cowdenbeath, and Cupar.
The plan would see each store undergo a set of refurbishments and enhancements that would "enhance the customer experience."
Alongside refurbishing the Scottish based stores, the discounted supermarket also announced that it would be expanding even further with 10 new stores this summer across West Yorkshire, the Midlands and London.
It also comes after we reported that Aldi has resubmitted plans to Perth and Kinross Council for a £4.8 million new store on Necessity Brae replacing the existing one on Glasgow Road.
While the plans were initially approved unanimously by councillors in May 2022 and February 2023, they were quickly quashed by Tesco and the Court of Session in April 26, 2024.
It marks the third time the firm has resubmitted plans, and it came after it had been "inundated" with support from over 800 Perth residents who signed a petition to get the new Aldi.

Discounted retailer launches up to 50% off sale as three Scots stores to shut
The high street firm is set to close a total of 26 stores as part of restructuring plans. A major UK retailer has been spotted launching closing down sales with up to 50 percent off. It comes as the firm has announced more closures. The Original Factory Shop is in the midst of restructuring plans that will see it close down a total of 26 stores, with even more now being announced to close in the coming weeks. As part of the move, the discounted firm has already closed 17 stores across the country, with four being based in Scotland alone. Closures across Scotland include Perth, Arbroath and Peterhead on June 28, while the Cupar store was shuttered on July 27. Blairgowrie, Kinross and Nairn are also on the list, although dates have not been confirmed. Two more stores in England have now been added to the list of ongoing closures, with sales at the affected stores offering half-price off absolutely everything in a bid to clear stock. As reported by the Sun, among the new wave of closures will be the Chard store, with a Facebook post announcing that it would permanently cease trading on September 7. The post told customers: 'We are sorry to let you know… This store is closing. Thank you to our wonderful colleagues for your support throughout our time here in the local community.' Ahead of its closing date, the store has announced that it is offering a massive clearance sale with up to 50 percent off all stock. The high street chain offers a variety of ranges in store including fashion, homeware, toys and beauty, with products from its own labels and big name brands such as Bold, Nike, L'Oréal Paris and more. The full post read: "We'll soon be closing the store and would like to take this time to thank all of our customers at Chard store. We have loved serving you and being part of the local community. "Our last trading day is Sunday 7th September. We hope you will pop in to see us before we close. All stock is reduced - up to 50% off original price." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! A further two stores also made similar posts confirming closures, with the Whitchurch, Shropshire and Mexborough, South Yorkshire being earmarked for closure, although the date has not been confirmed for both. The Original Factory Shop has been a high street staple since it first opened in 1969. It was recently sold to Modella Capital, the firm that bought over WHSmith and Hobbycraft, in February 2025. To help renegotiate rents at 88 stores, the private equity firm drafted up restructuring plans before drawing up plans to initiate a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) for the retailer in April. A CVA is often used by companies to prevent insolvency, which could otherwise force stores to close or trigger the collapse of the entire business. The Scottish island beachside B&B that was named 'friendliest' in the country
"Great host, amazing room and fantastic breakfast." Scotland's countless islands are a popular choice for a staycation. Out of the hundreds of isles dotted around the coast, many are renowned as top holiday destinations. Most of Scotland's inhabited islands are home to various hotels and bed and breakfast. One of these was even recently named the "friendliest" in the country. As reported by the Daily Record, Scotland's best bed and breakfasts were crowned in July as part of the annual AA B&B Awards. Among the prizes handed out was the 'AA Friendliest B&B of the Year' award, which went to Broad Bay House on the Isle of Lewis. Broad Bay House is a guest house located on the eastern coast of the island, around 7.5 miles from its capital town of Stornoway. It is situated in a small working crofting community, next to a sandy beach that can be directly accessed from the house. The AA singled out the business's "service, simplicity and style", in addition to its "special" hospitality. Meanwhile, inspectors stated that visitors were "guaranteed to have an extraordinary experience". Following the announcement, Broad Bay House co-owner Sue Reid commented: "We're absolutely delighted to receive this award this year for the friendliest bed and breakfast." The guest house features four luxury en-suite guest rooms, which are all equipped with a flatscreen TV, a Bose Bluetooth speaker, and a DVD player. Each room also has a Nespresso machine, complimentary snacks, and luxury toiletries. Additionally, outside each bedroom is a personal decking area with seating. According to Broad Bay House, the rooms include "soft colours, natural woods and sympathetic furnishings" that "provide a relaxing environment". Other amenities at Broad Bay House include free Wi-Fi, a guest laundry, and a guest study. There is also an EV Charger for the exclusive use of guests. In terms of food, the guest house serves both breakfast and evening meals. Its breakfast menu includes a full Hebridean cooked breakfast, while among the dinner dishes available are Scottish salmon fillet and local scallops. Meanwhile, the house is fully licensed and has a broad selection of wines, gins, and malt whiskies available. Guests can also enjoy various gin cocktails. Broad Bay House has earned very positive reviews from previous guests. On Tripadvisor, the accommodation has a perfect five-star rating after 478 reviews. One visitor wrote: "We had the spacious room with sea view, lounge seats, plenty of tea, coffee and fresh milk in the fridge. The room and place is decorated in good taste, with cozy throws, wood furnishings and leather seating. "Tom—our host—is very accommodating, has a good sense of humour and gave us great tips throughout our visit. His wife is an excellent cook—we had the seafood platter at night and fresh made porridge in the morning. "Nothing was lacking and we can highly recommend Broad House to anyone visiting Lewis Island." Another echoed: "Had a fantastic stay here for four nights with our dog, you can see why this B and B is five stars. Great host amazing room and fantastic breakfast, they do offer evening meals we didn't experience this but if the breakfast anything to go off you wouldn't be disappointed, lovely view from the guest lounge looking at the sea."

Thousands of internet users in rural parts of Scotland are set to benefit from speedier connections after the completion of a £125 million funding round. Edinburgh-based broadband company GoFibre said the investment would support its delivery of two 'Project Gigabit' contracts in the south and north east of Scotland, covering the Borders, East Lothian, Angus, Aberdeenshire and the Moray coast. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The funding round has been led by a £45m debt facility from the Scottish National Investment Bank alongside a further £80m from Hamburg Commercial Bank (HCOB). GoFibre was advised by Deloitte on the transaction. Picture by Michal Wachucik/Abermedia The broadband provider is focused on expanding digital connectivity in underserved rural areas. It contributes to regional economic development by using local supply chains and recruiting talent within the communities it is connecting. Backed by Gresham House's British Sustainable Infrastructure Funds, GoFibre was recently awarded a £105m contract by the Scottish Government for the delivery of the UK government-funded Project Gigabit in the north-east of Scotland. The programme enables harder-to-reach communities to access fast and reliable high-speed broadband. The Scottish Government is playing a key role in delivering project procurements north of the Border, working closely with the UK government to deploy funding. Neil Conaghan, chief executive of GoFibre, said: 'This is a significant step-change in GoFibre's position both as a major independent broadband provider, and as a significant company in Scotland. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Our appointment as the supplier for the biggest Project Gigabit delivery area in Scotland, in the north east, builds on our win earlier this year for the very first Scottish lot to be announced, for the Borders and East Lothian. 'We are excited to play a crucial role in bringing the very best full-fibre broadband connectivity to rural areas in Scotland, as part of our mission to bridge the digital divide,' he added. While connectivity has improved in recent years, Scotland's urban-rural divide remains an issue for many users. Ofcom figures show that 44 per cent of rural communities have full-fibre coverage, compared to 71 per cent of urban communities. Ailsa Young, investment director of innovation at the Scottish National Investment Bank, said: 'GoFibre is a great example of a Scottish scale-up that is targeting growth through delivering tangible local impact. We live in an increasingly digital world where high-speed, reliable internet is essential for accessing services and building and maintaining connections. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Broadband is a critical service for businesses and communities. This continues to be an important sector for us, so we're delighted to support GoFibre as it delivers important connectivity to the north east of Scotland.' The Forfar Indoor Sports Centre is a GoFibre customer. Managing director Mike Ferguson said: 'As a small business, having reliable and fast connectivity is crucial; everything from our tills to our booking system relies on it.
