Pressure? What pressure? Spain eves eye more history in Euro final
Basel, Switzerland
World champions Spain go into Sunday's Euro 2025 final with England looking to create more history and say their love for the game means there is no extra pressure.
The Spanish beat England 1-0 in the World Cup final in Sydney two years ago and they meet again in Basel with the Lionesses this time defending Euro champions.
'I don't think about pressure,' coach Montse Tomé told a news conference on Saturday.
'I think during the whole tournament we have been writing history - getting to semis and the final for the first time, beating Germany for the first time. We have been accomplishing objectives and that's the reason we're here.' They two sides have met twice this year in the Nations League, with one win each. England meanwhile have won the quarter- and semi-finals in Switzerland with late comebacks.
'They showed in this tournament that even if they don't play well they win,' added Tomé, whose squad have no fitness concerns.
'It's a final. We know it's a complicated game against a big national team and the current champion. We played twice against them this year, we know it will be hard. For the team, I have 23 players.' Spain captain Irene Paredes agreed with her coach about a lack of pressure.
'I said that for my favourites, England were there. Both teams deserve the final,' she said. 'We don't like the idea of being favourites. We know what it takes to be here, what we suffered.
'We are a team who don't see this game as a pressure but as an opportunity to continue writing history, do something big and to show ourselves and let people enjoy.' Spain's World Cup win is remembered internationally because of the kiss scandal involving former Spanish FA head Luis Rubiales.
The captain said they hope this final is remembered for football.
'Since 2023 we made big steps forwards. This idea (that women don't belong in football) is disappearing from society,' Paredes remarked.
'I still believe we have to continue opening doors to normalize situations which are more and more normal. We broke many obstacles, we are references for boys and girls in society but we still have things to do.'

Barca lauch disciplinary case against Stegen
MadridcTypeface:> Barcelona are set to launch disciplinary proceedings against their German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen in connection with his back injury. A club spokesman confirmed to dpa a report by daily Mundo Deportivo that they are taking action because Ter Stegen refuses to allow Barca sending the injury report to the medical commission of the Spanish league. Medical details are confidential which means that a player must consent that they are passed on. The club is aware of the player's rights but also sees an obligation of players towards their employer. Ter Stegen has said on social media he expects to be sidelined for three months. Barca see him out for four months, which according to La Liga rules would allow the club to spend 80% of the injured player's salary to register a new player. The man in question is Joan Garcia who has arrived from crosstown rivals Espanyol and is the designated new number one between the posts of the Spanish league and cup champions. Financially struggling Barca also had problems registering new players last year in the form of Dani Olmo. German international Ter Stegen is to be demoted from first choice to number three in the keeper hierarchy. (dpa)

Bayern Munich happy as Diaz shows his potential in debut
dpa Munich Luis Diaz didn't score in his Bayern Munich debut but he showed enough potential to create a little bit of pre-season euphoria at the Bundesliga champions. 'Luis Díaz is someone who loves football and always has a smile on his face. That's what we need,' midfielder Joshua Kimmich said Diaz' debut in Saturday's 2-1 win over Olympique Lyon. Diaz arrived on Wednesday from Liverpool for a reported €75 million from Liverpool ($87 million). It was the only good summer news so far for Bayern after Florian Wirtz snubbed then and went to Anfield instead, and VfB Stuttgart are so far unwilling to let Nick Woltemade join Bayern. In addition, Jamal Musiala is out injured for many months. Immediate impact The 28-year-old Colombian Diaz came on for the second half, set up the penalty which Michael Olise converted for the opening goal, and also had three chances to score himself. 'I had some good chances. Unfortunately I couldn't score, but I hope I can score in the next game. My goal is to help the team and win titles,' Diaz said. 'I feel very comfortable, I'm happy to be here and to have played my first game. We put in a good performance and were in control of the game.' Robbery comparison Diaz had a lot of pace on the left and together with the as lively Olise on the right brought back some momories of Bayern's famous winger duo of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. Sporting director Christoph Freund didn't want to get carried away, warning: 'Don't believe the hype, don't believe the drama.' But he added that 'we can expect many scorer points' from Diaz and Olise, who also netted Bayern's second against Lyon. Kane and Kompany impressed Striker Harry Kane was also duly impressed by Diaz, saying: 'Luis Díaz did a great job today. We've only had a few training sessions together so far, but he looks hungry and eager. 'You can tell he's happy to be here. He plays with a smile on his face. Today you could see how effective he is in the final third and we're going to need him this season, so I'm delighted he's here.' Coach Vincent Kompany, who only started pre-season training with the team earlier in the week after a post-Club World Cup holiday, was also satisfied. 'Luis Díaz is full of positive energy. We've already seen his qualities and abilities in training. He will help us,' Kompany said. Pre-season countdown Bayern kick off the season in a fortnight with the German Super Cup match against domestic cup winners VfB Stuttgart before starting their Bundesliga title defence on August 22 against RB Leipzig. 'It's an atypical preseason period - a short holiday, short preparation and then we're right back to it. But we're up for it. We don't have much time. We want to be physically ready for the first games,' Kompany said. Freund said that midfielder Joao Palhinha is set to leave Bayern after one year with little playing time, with Tottenham Hotspur the reported destination. He also said that midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic could be back in training in 3-4 weeks from an eye socket fracture. Bayern face Spurs on Thursday and Swiss club Grasshoppers on August 12 in their other pre-season games, and Freund was upbeat overall.
