NGO seeks reduction in CLAT fees
In a letter to the consortium, Asra president Sanjay Thul pointed out that the current fees of Rs4,000 for general category candidates and Rs3,500 for SC/ST candidates is significantly higher compared to other national-level examinations such as UPSC civil services and SSC exams, which charge only Rs100 or are free for reserved categories.
"CLAT is a gateway to prestigious National Law Universities, which play a pivotal role in shaping legal profession in India.
However, the high fees creates a barrier to access for many deserving candidates, especially in a country where a significant proportion of the population earns modest incomes," the letter stated.
For context, the average annual per capita income in India is about Rs1.8 lakh, making the CLAT fees a substantial expense for families supporting multiple aspirants.
The organisation proposed several reforms, including a tiered fee structure based on family income, enhanced fee waivers for SC/ST, EWS, and other marginalised groups, and greater transparency in how the collected fee is utilised.

It also suggested exploring cost-effective measures to conduct the exam.
"Reducing the CLAT fees will not only make legal education more accessible but also align with the govt's vision of ensuring affordable education for all," Thul said. Asra expressed willingness to collaborate with the consortium to develop sustainable solutions.

Maha churn again? Raj meets CM Fadnavis; a day after Thackeray brothers draw blank in 'BEST' polls
File photo NEW DELHI: Raj Thackeray met Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, with the timing of the talks fueling curiosity as it comes after the Thackeray brothers (Raj and Uddhav) failed to win any of the 21 seats in the BEST Employees' Cooperative Credit Society poll. While the details of the talks remain under wraps, the catch-up is hard to brush off for its political significance as Mumbai awaits the long-pending BMC polls. The meeting comes after the first joint electoral contest by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in the BEST Employees' Co-operative Credit Society elections ended in a humiliating defeat on Wednesday. 03:59 Fadnavis 'Thank Raj' Jab After Thackeray 'Cousins Reunite' & Share Stage After 20 Years The Shashank Rao-led BEST Workers' Union panel won 14 seats, while a BJP-backed panel led by Prasad Lad and Pravin Darekar took seven. The defeat is a setback for Uddhav and Raj ahead of BMC polls, with observers calling it a 'wake-up call' that exposed weak ground-level mobilisation. After the results, Fadnavis said the outcome showed rejection of 'Thackeray brand,' while Lad claimed workers punished 25 years of exploitation. Sena (UBT) neta Suhas Samant alleged cash-for-votes, a charge rivals denied. Last month, Uddhav Thackeray and cousin Raj Thackeray shared the stage at a mega rally in Mumbai organised by their parties to mark the withdrawal of government resolutions (GRs) related to the three-language policy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Allahabad HC quashes Abbas Ansari's conviction in hate speech case; restores his Assembly membership
The Allahabad High Court has overturned the conviction of gangster-turned politician Mukhtar Ansari 's son, Abbas Ansari , Mau MLA , in a 2022 hate speech case and restored his Assembly membership. On Wednesday, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party MLA Abbas Ansari received major relief after the Allahabad High Court overturned the MP/MLA court's order of his conviction. He was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly after his conviction in a hate speech case. Speaking to ANI, his advocate Upendra Upadhyay said, "Abbas Ansari's membership of UP Vidhan Sabha was revoked, and he was sentenced to two years by the CJM court. In response, he filed an appeal in the Sessions Court, which granted him bail but did not stay the punishment, preventing the restoration of his membership. Subsequently, he went to the High Court, which today stayed the punishment, resulting in the restoration of his membership." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 most beautiful women in the world Undo Reacting to the High Court's order, Mukhtar Ansari's elder brother, Sibgatullah Ansari, termed this a "victory of justice and fairness." He said, "This is the victory of justice and fairness. We all believed we were innocent and would definitely get justice, with the punishment given to Abbas Ansari being cancelled. Speaking in court cases is also a crime in today's time... the only thing is that we have got justice; this is the victory of justice... even today justice is alive in the judiciary, due to which the country is moving forward." Live Events Abbas Ansari had filed a petition in the High Court on July 17 to stop the two-year sentence given by the MP/MLA Special Court Mau in the hate speech case. On May 31, the Chief Judicial Magistrate (MP-MLA) court in Mau district had awarded two years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 3000 on Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party MLA and dead mafia don Mukhtar Ansari's son Abbas Ansari in connection with the hate speech case of 2022. On this basis, he lost his MLA post on June 1, 2025. Abbas Ansari's close aide, Mansoor Ansari, was also sentenced to six months of imprisonment. Ansari was booked for delivering a provocative speech against the Mau district administration while the model code of conduct was in place. Earlier, the Allahabad High Court refused anticipatory bail to him in the same case. He approached the top court against the High Court's December 2023 order. On December 19, 2023, the High Court rejected the anticipatory bail application of Ansari and said that, looking at the facts and circumstances of the case, the offence was made out. The FIR was lodged in March 2022 at Kotwali police station in Mau district against Abbas Ansari, Umar Ansari, and others. It was alleged in the FIR that on March 3, 2022, at Pahadpura ground, Abbas Ansari, Umar Ansari, and organiser Mansoor Ahmad Ansari, in a public meeting, called for settling a score with the Mau administration. Abbas Ansari fought and won on a ticket from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), the then alliance partner of the Samajwadi Party , in the 2022 state assembly elections from the Sadar seat in Mau. As per the Representation of the People Act, a sentence of two years or more can lead to disqualification from holding public office, pending appeal.
