3 arrested for killing businessman on south Delhi road
On May 15, the victim, Arun Lohiya, a businessman dealing in scrap material, was killed while returning from Saket court with his father Rambir Lohiya, 50, in their Mahindra XUV. Police said Lohiya had gone to attend a court hearing in an attempted murder case. At 1pm, on a busy Mehrauli road, two men approached Lohiya and fired 10-12 rounds. Police said the accused and victim had an old enmity over a property dispute.
'CCTVs were analysed and photos of the accused were taken from there and shared within police groups and informers. On Wednesday night, we traced their location to Chirag Delhi-Khanpur stretch,' DCP (south) Ankit Chauhan said.
At 3am, a team was sent there and the men were spotted on a bike. Police said the men tried escaping and fell from the bike. When asked to surrender, they fired at the police with one bullet hitting the bullet-proof jacket of a head constable. Police said they fired in retaliation and the accused were hit in the leg and overpowered.
The two, Deepak Kumar, 31, and Yogesh Kumar, 30, were identified as the alleged shooters. During their interrogation, police said they also found the main conspirator Ajay (single name), 27, and arrested him from Pushp Vihar.

Surat: A 54-year-old Surat businessman has filed a complaint at Khatodara police station against his company's chartered accountant and three of his relatives over an alleged Rs 18.73 crore fraud. The accused, Kailash Chandra Lohiya, is alleged to have removed Vijay Shah's name from the company he founded without his knowledge and failed to return the money Shah had transferred to the firm. Shah, a resident of Bhatar in Surat, lives with his family in Oklahoma, USA, from where he runs businesses in real estate, water purifiers and hotels across the USA, Thailand and India. He appointed Lohiya as the chartered accountant of his company, Hightech Water Solution Pvt Ltd, to manage audits and other operations. As frequent overseas travel kept him from managing all his ventures, Shah, in 2013, handed over the company's administration to Lohiya, made him a director, and transferred 50% shares worth Rs 6.43 crore to him. However, in 2017, Lohiya allegedly appointed his wife Deesha, mother-in-law Usha, and brother-in-law Pradeep Agrawal as directors without Shah's consent. Ltd., to a partnership business, but the money was never returned. This is not the first complaint against Lohiya. Shah had earlier approached the DCB police station accusing Lohiya and his wife of cheating. Khatodara police have registered the latest complaint and begun an investigation. In an Instagram post, Ms Lohiya recounted two separate incidents involving Uber and Rapido drivers that left her feeling deeply unsafe. She described the encounters as traumatic and highlighted how both rides turned into distressing ordeals. Her account has sparked fresh outrage online, prompting renewed discussion about the safety of women travelling alone in Delhi. In the post, Ms Lohiya recalled booking a Rapido ride from Delhi Airport and requested the driver to turn on the air conditioning. However, he angrily refused, saying, "It will be turned on at my will. If you need AC that badly, book another cab." After the altercation, Ms Lohiya approached Rapido's help desk at the airport. NDPL smuggling causes Rs 300 crore revenue loss to Telangana Exchequer
HYDERABAD: A thriving underground network of non-duty paid liquor (NDPL) smugglers is working in tandem with private event organisers, causing an estimated ₹300 crore annual loss to the state exchequer. A recent crackdown by the excise department has unravelled the scale, sophistication, and spread of this illegal trade, particularly within the GHMC limits. In the past three weeks alone, excise officials have stumbled upon multiple NDPL smuggling routes, primarily from Haryana, Goa, and Karnataka, where liquor taxes are significantly lower than in Telangana. Liquor meant exclusively for defence canteens and even customs duty-free bottles meant for inbound air passengers are being illegally diverted to high-paying clientele, often through private parties and event circuits in Hyderabad. On June 21, Patancheru excise officials intercepted a Mahindra XUV with a UP registration plate and seized 408 bottles of premium whisky brands-Chivas Regal, Black Label, Red Label, and Jameson. The vehicle was operated by two Hyderabad-based men, A Tikiya Naik and S Naveen Kumar, who admitted to sourcing the liquor from a wholesale store in Faridabad, Haryana, for ₹5 lakh. With tax differences, liquor worth ₹5 lakh in Haryana fetches ₹15 lakh here. From a single run, they make over ₹10 lakh," said excise inspector Parameshwar Goud. On June 17, two ex-servicemen, Purushotham from Yapral and Siddaiah from Kowkoor, were caught at Malkajgiri with 37 bottles worth ₹75,000 sourced from a Ballari (Karnataka) defence canteen. A week earlier, 115 bottles of defence quota liquor worth ₹2.3 lakh were seized in Serilingampally. In most cases, the liquor was purchased in Karnataka, where defence canteen prices are much lower. "For instance, a Teacher's whisky bottle costs ₹800 in a Karnataka canteen, ₹1,600 in Telangana's defence outlet, and ₹2,200 in a retail store. The margins make smuggling highly profitable," explained an excise official. Smugglers are also ferrying high-end foreign liquor like Royal Salute, which costs ₹14,000 in Haryana but sells for ₹26,000 in Telangana, sometimes via trains or courier services. In Dec 2024, the excise department busted a customs duty-free liquor racket involving a police constable at RGIA, a home guard, two techies and others. The gang allegedly procured 41 bottles worth ₹15 lakh-mostly Royal Salute and Gold Label-using the passport and ticket copies of Gulf returnees in collusion with a duty-free shop worker at Hyderabad airport.
