Two men were arrested after a gunfight in Chirag Delhi in south Delhi on Thursday for gunning down a 24-year-old businessman three weeks ago near the Chhatarpur metro station, police said, adding that the accused's interrogation also led to the arrest of another man who planned the murder. The exchange of fire occurred at 3am and 11 rounds were fired from both sides, said police.
On May 15, the victim, Arun Lohiya, a businessman dealing in scrap material, was killed while returning from Saket court with his father Rambir Lohiya, 50, in their Mahindra XUV. Police said Lohiya had gone to attend a court hearing in an attempted murder case. At 1pm, on a busy Mehrauli road, two men approached Lohiya and fired 10-12 rounds. Police said the accused and victim had an old enmity over a property dispute.
'CCTVs were analysed and photos of the accused were taken from there and shared within police groups and informers. On Wednesday night, we traced their location to Chirag Delhi-Khanpur stretch,' DCP (south) Ankit Chauhan said.
At 3am, a team was sent there and the men were spotted on a bike. Police said the men tried escaping and fell from the bike. When asked to surrender, they fired at the police with one bullet hitting the bullet-proof jacket of a head constable. Police said they fired in retaliation and the accused were hit in the leg and overpowered.
The two, Deepak Kumar, 31, and Yogesh Kumar, 30, were identified as the alleged shooters. During their interrogation, police said they also found the main conspirator Ajay (single name), 27, and arrested him from Pushp Vihar.

Two shoot dead man on busy road in Delhi

Two on a motorcycle intercepted a car on a busy Mehrauli road on Thursday afternoon and shot dead its 24-year-old driver before fleeing, in what police described as a premeditated murder linked to a property dispute. The victim was identified as Arun Lohiya, a businessman dealing in scrap and based in southwest Delhi's Aya Nagar. On the passenger seat of the black Mahindra Scorpio was his 50-year-old father, Rambir Lohiya, who police said was not targeted. The father and son were returning from the Saket court after attending a hearing in an attempted murder case. The shooting unfolded in full public view near Chhatarpur Metro station around 1pm, bringing traffic to a standstill. According to locals and police, the assailants fired over 10–12 rounds — some aimed at Lohiya and his car, others into the air. Eyewitnesses said they tried to stop the attackers, even hurling helmets at them, but the duo managed to escape. Police have identified the suspects and are probing the murder, which they said was due to personal enmity — the victim and the accused hail from the same village. DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan said, 'Arun was rushed to the hospital but was declared brought dead. His father was unharmed. Preliminary investigation shows they were returning from a court hearing in an attempted murder case registered in Fatehpur Beri, in which Arun was the accused.' 'There's a history of cross-complaints between the families. Arun had assaulted one of the accused last year, who was hospitalised for months. The accused plotted this attack as revenge,' said an officer. Chauhan said teams are searching the suspects. Police are also probing the suspects' links to the Rohit Chaudhary gang.

Man shot at near Chhatarpur Metro station in Delhi; police say case of personal enmity

A man was shot at multiple times by assailants in broad daylight while he was driving an SUV near the Chhatarpur Metro station in South Delhi's Mehrauli area Thursday. A Delhi Police officer said 10 rounds were fired at Arun Lohiya, who was driving a Scorpio and was near the Commander Chowk in Mehrauli, when he was intercepted at 1 pm by the alleged assailants. 'The accused knew Lohiya and belonged to the same village as him. They had a dispute with him over some land in the village. Prima facie, it seems like a case of personal enmity,' the officer said. Lohiya, a resident of Aya Nagar, was taken to the nearby hospital, where his condition is said to be serious. While confirming the incident, Ankit Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), also pointed towards a possible case of personal enmity. 'On prima facie inquiry, it has been found that the victim, namely Arun Lohia, who was in his car, sustained bullet injuries. It seems to be a case of personal enmity wherein the alleged perpetrators are known to the victims as they are residents of the same village. There is a previous case history between the two parties,' he said. 'The accused involved in the incident have been identified, and multiple teams have been formed to trace them,' Chauhan said. In November 2024, The Indian Express reported that 14 cases of extortion were reported in South Delhi in 2024, and 16 in 2023, as compared to 10 in 2022. Another report by The Express in July 2024 said Aya Nagar, from where Lohiya belongs, was one of the hotspots of the Rohit Chaudhary gang. Crime data given by the Delhi Police showed that 107 cases of murder were reported between January 1 and March 31 in 2025, a slight uptick from 105 in 2024 during the same period, but lower than 2023, when it was 115. Attempt to murder cases, though, went down by 17.24 per cent to 168 as compared to 203 in 2024.
