Charges against Rama reek of political payback, says DAP's Santiago

PETALING JAYA : Former Klang MP Charles Santiago has expressed concern over the 17 criminal breach of trust charges levelled against former Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy, saying it raises suspicions of political payback.
Santiago said the timing of the charges against Ramasamy, who has been critical of the government since he quit DAP in August 2023, was suspicious when the allegations involving the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) were not new.
The DAP man warned that this move would tarnish public trust in the integrity of government institutions, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
'The sudden urgency to press charges conveniently timed after Ramasamy's outspoken criticism of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on issues such as nepotism, governance, and institutional decay raises legitimate suspicion of political retaliation.
'This is not just about Ramasamy. It is about the integrity of public institutions that must operate free from political influence.
'When state machinery appears to be weaponised to silence dissent, especially against veteran leaders who have spent decades in public service, it undermines public trust in both the justice system and the government's reform agenda,' he said in a statement.
Santiago said the unity government must not revert to the 'playbook of persecution' employed by past administrations.
He said Putrajaya must value independent voices that question, critique and hold them accountable, and not meet them with legal intimidation.
'At a time when racial polarisation, economic disparity, and democratic fatigue are real and growing, the last thing Malaysia needs is to distract itself with anything that vaguely hints of political vendettas,' he said.
Earlier today, Ramasamy claimed trial to 17 charges of CBT by using RM859,131.29 in PHEB funds between May 2019 and February 2022 without obtaining the board's formal approval.
Thirteen of the charges against Ramasamy, who chaired PHEB from 2010 to 2023, were linked to the procurement of a RM779,131.29 gold-plated Thaipusam chariot in 2019.
Two charges are linked to RM65,000 in medical assistance to individuals, while two other charges are linked to RM15,000 in education sponsorships.

The 14-year-old from Matang, Sarawak, pleaded guilty to eight charges of voluntarily causing hurt when brought before three separate magistrates' courts in Kuching today, Bernama reported. Magistrates Ling Hui Chuan, Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan and Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali separately recorded his guilty plea. The offences took place between 12.30am and 2am on May 2 at a school hostel in Matang, when the victims, aged between 13 and 15, were asleep. According to the facts of the case, the teenager pressed a hot iron on the victims' arms, ankles, necks and calves, leaving them with burn injuries. His action was witnessed by other students in the dormitory. He was also ordered to be placed under the supervision of the social welfare department for one year. His parents will be allowed to visit him once every two months. The prosecution was led by Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin and Arman Ibrahim. The teenager was represented by lawyers Russel Lim and Brandon Ling.

(Bernama pic) SHAH ALAM : The position of Kota Raja Umno chief is now held by Abdul Raof Mokhtar, according to Selangor Umno liaison committee chairman Megat Zulkarnain Omardin. He said Raof, who is currently the division's deputy chief, would act in the position until the next party election. He said this followed the resignation of Kota Raja Umno chief Tengku Zafrul Aziz, who expressed his intention to join PKR on May 30. 'Automatically, the deputy chief of the (Kota Raja) Umno division will act in the position of division chief. 'We will send an official letter to Umno president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) for the matter to be brought to the Supreme Council meeting,' he said at a press conference here last night. Megat added that his friendship with Tengku Zafrul continued as usual, and called on Selangor Umno to continue working and moving forward. Tengku Zafrul, the investment, trade and industry minister, announced his resignation from Umno in a May 30 statement on Facebook, saying he had sent a letter of resignation to the party leadership on the same date. Tengku Zafrul to go to Washington again for tariff talks

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz will travel to Washington on June 18 to continue negotiations over US tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. Speaking after an event in Kuala Lumpur today, Tengku Zafrul said he briefed the Cabinet earlier today on the upcoming visit. 'I will be going to the United States next week, and we will continue in-person negotiations. Previously, discussions were held online,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Tengku Zafrul added that he was scheduled to meet US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and other US officials, investors and key business groups, including the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and the US-Asean Business Council. Tengku Zafrul's follow-up visit comes after his visit in April, during which he met with Greer and US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. Malaysia faces a 24% tariff on certain exports to the US unless both sides reach an agreement before the current 90-day pause ends on July 8. Tengku Zafrul previously said that talks with the US would focus on three specific areas, namely reducing the 24% rate, non-tariff trade barriers and trade imbalance between the two nations.
