Abdul Raof made acting Kota Raja Umno chief
SHAH ALAM : The position of Kota Raja Umno chief is now held by Abdul Raof Mokhtar, according to Selangor Umno liaison committee chairman Megat Zulkarnain Omardin.
He said Raof, who is currently the division's deputy chief, would act in the position until the next party election.
He said this followed the resignation of Kota Raja Umno chief Tengku Zafrul Aziz, who expressed his intention to join PKR on May 30.
'Automatically, the deputy chief of the (Kota Raja) Umno division will act in the position of division chief.
'We will send an official letter to Umno president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) for the matter to be brought to the Supreme Council meeting,' he said at a press conference here last night.
Megat added that his friendship with Tengku Zafrul continued as usual, and called on Selangor Umno to continue working and moving forward.
Tengku Zafrul, the investment, trade and industry minister, announced his resignation from Umno in a May 30 statement on Facebook, saying he had sent a letter of resignation to the party leadership on the same date.
In the letter, Tengku Zafrul expressed his intention to resign as a member of the Supreme Council, Kota Raja Umno chief and party member.

UMNO deputy president Mohamad Hasan has joined party colleagues in backing Youth Chief Dr Akmal Saleh's firm stance against the Kepala Batas businessman who flew the Jalur Gemilang upside down. Earlier, UMNO Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi had already come to Akmal's defence, lauding his patriotism for protesting at the Penang hardware store. Defending Akmal's rally as a peaceful one despite provocation, Mohamad took the chance to remind the DAP and its youth wing, DAPSY, to act with rationality. DAPSY had urged Pakatan Harapan leaders to cut ties with Akmal after the rally, a call to which the UMNO Youth chief retorted that such a move would effectively mean severing ties with UMNO itself. 'I hope everyone remains calm. The police already summoned Akmal to give a statement,' he reportedly said after launching the Rembau UMNO Wanita, Youth and Puteri divisional meetings in Seremban on Saturday. On Akmal's rally in Kepala Batas, Mohamad maintained that the Merlimau assemblyperson had gone there with a 'peaceful mission' and was not seeking to create chaos. 'However, he was provoked, and fortunately nothing untoward happened,' he said, according to Sinar Harian. He also emphasised that political stability is crucial for attracting investors, warning that trivial issues should not escalate into national instability. 'The law on flag installation already exists. If someone puts up the flag incorrectly, the necessary action should be taken. 'We cannot only act against one party while letting others off. If UMNO Youth has to take matters into their own hands, then what's the point of having enforcement agencies?' he asked. On the other hand, Puad argued that displaying the flag incorrectly, even unintentionally, showed apathy and deserved reprimand. He dismissed criticism that Akmal's actions were 'political gangsterism,' stressing the gathering was peaceful. Akmal, who faces police action for defying orders, said he was ready to be punished in defence of national dignity. Puad added that attempts to suppress such patriotism were misguided, calling critics the 'real hoodlums.' Some users like SRMan are also criticising the foreign minister for saying the laws must be upheld, which they think only applies to some. 'Mohamad Hasan, your stance seems contradictory. On one hand, you maintained that existing laws must be enforced so that people continue to respect the law and do not act as they please. She said that the Malaysian flag, which serves to instil patriotism among the people, must be given due prominence. Dr Zaliha also advised the public to fly the flag according to the prescribed guidelines. Minister says Cabinet won't tolerate ‘irresponsible politicians' who stir tensions over flag gaffes, calls it ‘bullying'
KLANG, Aug 17 — The Cabinet has vowed to take firm action against politicians who inflame public tensions over the recent reversed Jalur Gemilang incident in Penang, a row that erupted after a hardware shop in Kepala Batas displayed the national flag incorrectly during Merdeka celebrations. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said one such politician had already been summoned for police investigation under three separate Acts, news portal Malaysiakini reported. 'This is a highly irresponsible act! It's not only irresponsible, it is an act of bullying. Everyone knows who I am talking about. 'I believe no one would deliberately hang the national flag upside down. And even if it did happen, we are a nation and society governed by the rule of law. If there is a problem, lodge a police report and let the authorities take action. 'You are not an enforcement agency, you cannot just bring a group of people to someone's shop, disrupt their business, and bully them,' he was quoted as saying in a speech here last night. According to the news report, he did not name anyone in his speech. Chang said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and other Cabinet members were very concerned that the issue would dampen public enthusiasm for national day celebrations and decided that firm action is required against such 'irresponsible politicians'. 'We shall wait and see whether anyone will eventually be charged in court,' he was quoted as saying.
