Mohamad Hasan joins others to back Akmal's ‘peace rally' over upside-down flag
Earlier, UMNO Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi had already come to Akmal's defence, lauding his patriotism for protesting at the Penang hardware store.
Yesterday, Mohamad cautioned against making Akmal the sole target of enforcement, stressing that the law must apply fairly to all. He also warned that mocking national symbols could stir public anger.
Defending Akmal's rally as a peaceful one despite provocation, Mohamad took the chance to remind the DAP and its youth wing, DAPSY, to act with rationality.
DAPSY had urged Pakatan Harapan leaders to cut ties with Akmal after the rally, a call to which the UMNO Youth chief retorted that such a move would effectively mean severing ties with UMNO itself.
'I hope everyone remains calm. The police already summoned Akmal to give a statement,' he reportedly said after launching the Rembau UMNO Wanita, Youth and Puteri divisional meetings in Seremban on Saturday.
On Akmal's rally in Kepala Batas, Mohamad maintained that the Merlimau assemblyperson had gone there with a 'peaceful mission' and was not seeking to create chaos.
'However, he was provoked, and fortunately nothing untoward happened,' he said, according to Sinar Harian.
He also emphasised that political stability is crucial for attracting investors, warning that trivial issues should not escalate into national instability.
'The law on flag installation already exists. If someone puts up the flag incorrectly, the necessary action should be taken.
'We cannot only act against one party while letting others off. If UMNO Youth has to take matters into their own hands, then what's the point of having enforcement agencies?' he asked.
On the other hand, Puad argued that displaying the flag incorrectly, even unintentionally, showed apathy and deserved reprimand.
He dismissed criticism that Akmal's actions were 'political gangsterism,' stressing the gathering was peaceful.
Akmal, who faces police action for defying orders, said he was ready to be punished in defence of national dignity.
Puad added that attempts to suppress such patriotism were misguided, calling critics the 'real hoodlums.'
Meanwhile, Damansara UMNO Youth Committee member Ali Amir Razali also chipped in to defend Akmal's actions, saying the latter is a 'real leader' who is not 'yielding an inch' in the face of intimidation.
'Not merely writing on social media, he faces reality on the ground. This is an example of a young leader who is neither afraid nor intimidated, and who will not yield even an inch when the nation's dignity is challenged,' he said in a statement to UMNO Online.
Nevertheless, Mohamad Hasan got a bashing from Malaysiakini subscribers who, in droves, criticised his statements on Akmal.
Many felt he was criticising the wrong people, pointing out that the businessman had already apologised and explained the flag was only raised briefly to take measurements before being properly installed.
User GP2025 wrote: 'Akmal provoked? He didn't provoke Chinese sentiments by bullying and intimidating a shop owner who made a mistake about flying the Malaysian flag?
'There's no basis for Akmal's anger. There was no intentional crime. And Tok May is defending him? Do these leaders have a moral compass?'
Some users like SRMan are also criticising the foreign minister for saying the laws must be upheld, which they think only applies to some.
'Mohamad Hasan, your stance seems contradictory. On one hand, you maintained that existing laws must be enforced so that people continue to respect the law and do not act as they please. However, on the other hand, you supported the Merlimau assemblyperson's supposedly 'peaceful mission' all the way to Penang to teach others the correct way of hanging a flag.'
One user 'OrangePanther1466' thought the minister only added more pain to the matter when he spoke.
'Mat Hassan, it would have been better if you had not spoken. If you have nothing intelligent to say, zip it up.
'That young man is having you eating out of his palm by putting you in a position of having to defend his actions.
'You are a national leader, so act like one. Being bias does not endear you to the people.' —Aug 17, 2025

Shahelmey will contest under GRS, says Hajiji
Hajiji speaking to reporters after the Anak Muda N22/N23/N24 2025 programme. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): It is now essentially confirmed that Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya will contest under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) banner in the upcoming state elections. GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, in his speech at the Anak Muda N22/N23/N24 2025 programme in Putatan on Sunday, voiced the coalition's aim to capture all three state seats in the Putatan parliamentary constituency — Tanjung Keramat, Petagas and Tanjung Aru. Responding later to a reporter's question on Shahelmey's 'difficult' political situation — reportedly suspended from Umno for six years and facing the risk of triggering the Anti-Hop Law if he were to defend his Tanjung Keramat seat — Hajiji brushed it off. 'What's so difficult about it? He is both an assemblyman and Member of Parliament. Tatap menang punya (win for sure),' Hajiji said cheerfully. When asked whether Shahelmey would contest under the Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket, Hajiji, who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) president, replied: ''Dia ikut' (he will follow) 'siurang' (us in Sabahan slang).' Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin maintains Shahelmey remains part of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) and has repeatedly stated Umno will not renominate him. Meanwhile, Hajiji emphasised the state government's continued commitment to safeguarding the interests of youths in Sabah, noting that youth development is one of the pillars of the Sabah Maju Jaya agenda. 'Youths are not merely beneficiaries, but also agents of change. In a world full of challenges, young people must be leaders of community harmony, guardians of cultural heritage, and supporters of technological progress,' he said. Hajiji said that between 2021 and 2025, a total of 14 new youth-focused initiatives have been introduced with allocations of RM164.14 million, benefitting over 210,000 students. He added that the government has also implemented youth grants, skills training, innovation and entrepreneurship programmes to provide young people with platforms to grow. At the event, Hajiji presented the Young People Programme grant worth RM300,000 to youth NGOs in Tanjung Aru, Petagas and Tanjung Keramat.

Keep legal, political issues separate to safeguard unity government, says Zahid
PASIR SALAK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has advised all political leaders to distinguish between legal and political matters to preserve harmony within the unity government. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, said that legal action must be taken in cases of law violations, while political disputes should be resolved through proper political channels. "We do not want any incident to force a political decision to be made, as this could shake the unity among the 18 parties in the Madani Government. In my view, we must separate legal matters from political matters," he told reporters here on Sunday (Aug 17). He said this after officiating the 'Program Santunan Desa' organised by the Community Development Department (Kemas) in Perak, in collaboration with Village Development and Security Committees and Kemas communities here on Sunday. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, further urged all quarters to respect party decisions to maintain tolerance among component parties. "Do not sensationalise an issue or try to become the most popular figure, only to end up damaging good relations between party leaders and at the grassroots level," he added. – Bernama

Hajiji: Shahelmey will join us for Sabah polls
PUTATAN: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor confirmed today that his deputy, Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, would be joining his team for the upcoming 17th Sabah state election (PRN17). "He will follow siurang (us)," Hajiji said when asked about Shahelmey's status. Despite his six-year suspension from Umno Sabah in 2023, Shahelmey is still regarded as part of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN), according to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. The term siurang, a local Sabahan expression meaning "us", refers to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which Hajiji leads. Bung Moktar has repeatedly said that Umno would not nominate Shahelmey again following his decision to support Hajiji and the GRS government in January 2023, after Sabah Umno withdrew its support for the chief minister. Speaking after attending the Youth Programme for Tanjung Aru, Petagas and Tanjung Keramat this afternoon, Hajiji expressed confidence that GRS could capture all three state seats in the Putatan parliamentary constituency in PRN17. He also voiced confidence in Shahelmey, who is also the Putatan MP, to defend the Tanjung Keramat seat, which he won under a BN ticket during the 16th state election (PRN16) in September 2020. "It will not be difficult… he will surely win. He is still the assemblyman, and he is also the member of parliament," Hajiji said. Shahelmey, however, risks losing his eligibility as Putatan MP if he contests under a GRS ticket in PRN17 due to the anti-hopping law, as the parliamentary seat was won under a BN ticket in the 15th General Election (GE15) in November 2022. Earlier in his speech, Hajiji, who is also GRS chairman, said the coalition could secure all three state seats in Putatan if the people remain united in supporting the government. "Putatan is fortunate to have a deputy chief minister and elected representatives who actively serve the people. God willing, in this election GRS will take all three state seats. The people of Putatan must unite to ensure this good government is returned," he said. Currently, the Tanjung Aru state seat is held by opposition party Warisan, while Petagas and Tanjung Keramat are aligned with GRS. In PRN16, Petagas was also won by Warisan, but its assemblyman Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari quit the party in February 2023 to join Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), a GRS component party.
