Penang DAPSY calls for cutting political ties with Umno youth chief over extreme conduct

DAPSY claimed that Dr Akmal's recent actions pose 'a serious violation of the country's laws' and contradict the Unity Government's commitment to diversity. Penang DAPSY urges DAP and National DAPSY to cut all forms of political cooperation with Umno Youth Chief, especially ahead of the upcoming general election. Photo for illustration purpose. Photo: BERNAMA FILE PIX GEORGE TOWN – The Penang DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) has urged both DAP and national-level DAPSY to completely end political cooperation with Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, citing his alleged extreme political behaviour and threats to national harmony. In a statement on Friday, Penang DAPSY claimed that Dr Akmal's recent actions pose 'a serious violation of the country's laws' and contradict the Unity Government's commitment to diversity. 'Dr Akmal's action of openly threatening the prosecutor and subsequently organising a gathering is a serious violation of the country's laws. 'This behaviour contradicts the stance of the Unity Government that embraces diversity and deliberately fuels racial sentiments, thereby undermining public confidence in the government's ability to maintain national stability,' it said on Friday. The Youth wing also criticised Dr Akmal for allegedly downplaying past incidents, including when Umno Youth Terengganu and Pas used the wrong version of the national flag. They further accused him of stoking racial hatred in line with the opposition's political narrative. 'Although Umno is part of the Unity Government, he seems to be a tool of Perikatan Nasional to create problems and disrupt the government's administration,' the statement added. Penang DAPSY stressed that any breaches of the Flag Act should be addressed by authorities and not used as political leverage. 'The patriotism slogan often championed by Akmal is nothing more than cheap political capital for personal gain. "When politicians are allowed to act outside the framework of the law while inciting racial hatred, Malaysia will become a country that frightens its own people,' it said. The group reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rule of law, dignity, and safety of every Malaysian citizen. The call came after a 500-strong crowd from Umno, Pas and Bersatu, led by Dr Akmal, marched during the 'Jalur Gemilang Solidarity Gathering – Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku' in Kepala Batas ahead of National Day. The march turned tense when another group, led by Lawyers for Liberty Malaysia Director Zaid Malek, displayed placards reading 'Don't Be a Zionist' and 'Don't Bully'. No arrests or incidents were reported after the gathering dispersed. Meanwhile, Dr Akmal said that any move to sever ties with him should not be viewed in isolation from the organisation he represents. 'Cutting ties with me means cutting ties with Umno Youth, which means cutting ties with Umno. Ok. Bring it on,' he said in a Facebook post on Friday.

DAPSY: Resolve flag blunder issue via law, not UMNO Youth's 'selective mob justice' manner

Editor's Note: This is the reaction by DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) in response to UMNO Youth chief Datuk Muhamad Akmal Saleh over the latest flag blunder incident in Taman Bertam Perdana in Kepala Batas, Penang. Following the latest incident of yet another Jalur Gemilang being flown upside down after an earlier one involving SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson, the outspoken defender of race and religion has rallied his movement to 'march down' to mainland Penang to school the 'two Ah Peks (elderly uncles) on how to fly the Malaysian flag'. THE national level DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) strongly condemn the statement of UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who urged the public to 'visit' a business premise located in Kepala Batas, Penang 'to right' the issue of the Jalur Gemilang being hung upside down. This action not only gives the impression that Dr Akmal wants to act like an authority but such an approach itself does not uphold the rule of law. National DAPSY therefore slams the hypocritical and double-standard attitude shown by Dr Akmal on the Jalur Gemilang issue. Has the Melaka state EXCO ever mobilised the public to 'visit' the Education Ministry (MOE) and the Terengganu PAS headquarters which have also committed mistakes of a similar nature? The answer is negative which clearly shows how hypocritical the current UMNO Youth chief is. Malaysia is a constitutional country based on the rule of law. Any action that violates the law or regulations – including blunders in the flying of the Jalur Gemilang – should be dealt with according to existing procedures and regulations, not through actions that involve intimidation or 'mob justice'. 'Political gimmick' Patriotic awareness cannot be fostered through threats but through consistent education. DAPSY insists that action should be taken against lawbreakers in a manner consistent with the law. However, the act of magnifying the issue and mobilising the public to 'teach the perpetrators a lesson' is just a political gimmick that does not benefit national unity. A representative of the people should play a role in uniting the people, not causing tension. DAPSY believes that errors in flying the national flag constitutes an action that must be punished according to the law. However, what is dangerous to the society today is the attitude of some politicians like Dr Akmal who chooses to politicise such issues for personal gain. Our country does not need 'moral police'; instead, Malaysia needs leaders who prioritise peace, harmony and the integrity of the law. On this note, National DAPSY calls on all parties, especially Dr Akmal who has repeatedly divided the multi-racial community, to stop the culture of confrontational politics which only creates hatred and division. Our country will be more developed if we use the methods of dialogue, continuous education and willingness to obey the law. – Aug 10, 2025 Perak state assemblyman for Pasir Bedamar, Woo Kah Leong, is also the National DAP Socialist Youth (DASY) chief. 'I fear for my family': Father severs ties with son over repeated loan shark debts

KUALA LUMPUR: A heartbroken father has cut ties with his 22-year-old son, who repeatedly borrowed money from loan sharks and racked up debts totalling around RM150,000. Lim Kian Boon, a night market hawker, said the decision was necessary to protect the rest of the family – including elderly and young members – from harassment by loan sharks. He revealed that his son first borrowed RM50,000 three years ago. Although the family helped settle the amount, the son later took another RM55,000 loan without their knowledge, China Press reported. "I only found out about the second loan when the loan sharks called me directly," he said during a press conference today, accompanied by Selangor DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) secretary Lee Woon Bin. His son, who is also a night market vendor, offered little explanation for his borrowing – only citing cash flow problems related to his business. Despite promising not to repeat his actions, he went on to take a third loan of over RM20,000 in May. Loan sharks eventually turned up at the family's doorstep. When the family confronted him, he again promised to stop. But Lim said a fourth loan of RM25,000 was soon taken. "For the first three rounds, I borrowed over RM100,000 from relatives and friends to settle his debts. Even my 70-year-old father chipped in. Though the debts have been cleared, I'm now repaying RM5,000 a month to those who helped," Lim said. He added that during the most recent incident, his son's girlfriend even pawned her gold jewellery to help repay the loan. "I just can't keep helping anymore. I have to protect my family. Our home has elderly people and children. I fear for their safety," he said. Lim noted that his son recently posted on Facebook, hinting at wanting to borrow again – a move he said would test whether cutting ties would deter loan sharks from targeting the rest of the family.

DAP Youth disagree with probe into JAC leak, urge government to prioritise transparency instead

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) has voiced disagreement with calls to investigate the person behind the alleged leak of minutes from a Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting. In a statement today, DAPSY national publicity secretary Ho Chi Yang said the focus should be on addressing public concerns over judicial independence rather than filing police reports against whistleblowers. Ho stated that the government must provide a timely and transparent explanation instead, 'to preserve the independence and sanctity of the judiciary'. The Tanah Rata assemblyman also stressed that the government should address 'mounting public questions surrounding the judicial appointments'. He said that resorting to police action could be seen as suppressing legitimate public scrutiny. While investigations can be conducted to verify the authenticity of the leaked document, Ho emphasised that such efforts must not discourage accountability or openness. 'Transparency and accountability are the fundamental spirits that we must all uphold to preserve judicial independence and further reinforce Malaysia's democratic institutions,' he said.

Hold inclusive consultations before policy announcements, Dapsy S'wak treasure tells Putrajaya

Wong says the government's initial announcement of the SST had sparked widespread public concern. KUCHING (June 27): The federal government has been urged to conduct thorough consultations involving all relevant stakeholders prior to announcing and implementing any new policy, said Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak treasurer Wong King Yii. He said the government's initial announcement of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) had sparked widespread public concern. 'I welcome the recent announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to exempt imported apples and oranges from the SST. 'This decision reflects the government's willingness to listen to the voices of the people, especially at a time when many are grappling with the rising cost of living,' he said in a statement. Wong added that a more inclusive and communicative approach would result in a more stable, forward-thinking policymaking, thereby reducing the need for reversals. He also pointed out that apples and oranges are essential sources of daily nutrition for many households that are not easily substitutable. 'By exempting the fruits from SST, the government not only eases the financial burden on the people, but also helps safeguard public health and basic nutritional needs,' he said. 'That said, while I acknowledge the positive impact of this adjustment, I remain concerned over the recent trend of frequent policy U-turns. 'Inconsistencies in major policy decisions can weaken public trust and create unnecessary confusion for both businesses and consumers,' he added. Moving forward, Wong hopes the government would adopt a more open, considerate decision-making process, which incorporates public input and helps rebuild confidence in the country's public institutions.
