43 roads highlighted as Powys completes 20mph zone review

More than 40 sections of Powys road have been highlighted as needing new speed limits in a review by the county council into the blanket 20mph roll-out in Wales.
The review into the new 20mph limits in Powys has been concluded, after Powys County Council collected people's feedback on the roads in the Welsh Government's "listening exercise".
It saw 53 responses come back requesting the 20mph policy be revoked, 97 supporting the lower limit, and 67 requesting either that a 20mph limit be amended to a 30mph zone or vice versa.
In total 43 sites were highlighted, with some respondents duplicating each others' requests.
There were also 25 responses requesting speed limits that fall outside of the remit of Welsh Government's 20mph review, which could be reviewed once the new Setting Local Speed Limits in Wales is published by Welsh Government.
The requests were all shared with county councillors for the relevant areas, plus town and community councils for further comment, and that has informed a Portfolio Holder Delegated Decision paper which will now come before councillors.
If approved, the proposals will be subject to a legal statutory traffic regulation order (TRO) process, before any changes are implemented.
Every TRO will involve a public consultation, where residents can show support or raise objections which would be published at https://en.powys.gov.uk/trafficconsult
'We are grateful to those who took the time to provide us with feedback during the Welsh Government's recent listening exercise, and for the further comments and discussions we have had with councillors and town and community councils,' said Cllr Jackie Charlton, cabinet member for a greener Powys whose role includes transport.
'It was pleasing to receive so many positive comments in support of the 20mph policy and how residents felt it had improved road safety and the local environment in their communities.
'We have reviewed the 43 identified individual sites or section of roads identified by the public and are pleased to have worked with the communities to bring this review to a close with a set of sensible proposals.
'For the roads where the speed limit is proposed to change, we will now be going through the formal legal process which allows the people of Powys to have another look at the plans any comment further, if they wish. These details will be available on the council website shortly.'

John Griffiths MS on Newport's role in technology industry

In the past few days and weeks, there have been some significant developments, which put Newport and the wider region on the map. I was pleased to visit KLA in Ringland a couple of The weeks ago, following their recent announcement to expand its operations at Imperial Park, which is hugely positive. Their growth and the semiconductor industry more widely is absolutely fantastic for our area. It is proof that Newport is becoming a key player in the future of advanced technologies, and is at the centre of the UK's growing tech industry. As your Member of Senedd, I'm determined to see local people benefit from these investments and ensuring there are more easily accessible pathways into secure, well-paid employment for residents within the city. These opportunities are not just for today, but for the next generations as well, something I know many families are thinking about as young people get their exam results this month. And with schools now out for the summer, it's important that we all take some time to rest and recharge (if we can), while making the most of what our wonderful city has to offer. Newport Live is running a wide range of family activity sessions during the summer break, many of which are free or low-cost. From sewing to skateboarding, welly walking to watching films, or Football for All, the team at Newport Live have put together a fantastic programme of activities for kids to enjoy this summer. Check out their website to find out more about how to get involved. Lots of these activities combine physical activity with a healthy meal, helping ease some of the holiday pressures on families. The Welsh Government is also funding the Food and Fun programmes in schools across Newport and Monmouthshire again this year. These provide enriching and inclusive opportunities for children and young people, from creative arts to outdoor adventures, all designed to boost wellbeing during the break. As always, I encourage residents to support our local businesses, cafes and events throughout the summer. Whether it's a visit to Beechwood Park, an explore on the beautiful Gwent Levels, or a day in Wentwood Forest, there is so much on our doorstep. Newport Transport have also recently announced a new '45' bus service going to and from Newport Bus Station to the Sports Village and the Wetlands, making accessing these facilities even easier. I also hope to see some familiar faces at Rodney Parade again this year, as we cheer on Newport County during the new football season! As always, if I can be of any help on issues relating to transport, schools, health, housing, rural and environmental issues, or sport and culture, please don't hesitate to get in touch. John Griffiths is Senedd member for Newport East.

Wrexham MP reflects on the 'incredible' National Eisteddfod

MP for Wrexham What an incredible week in Wrexham with the National Eisteddfod bringing thousands of visitors to Isycoed and to the city centre. The atmosphere on the Maes was fantastic with Pentref Wrecsam showcasing what our city has to offer in terms of bold ideas and vision: the 2029 City of Culture bid, Stori Brymbo which will be such a unique attraction when it opens, and This Is Wrecsam amongst many others all showing what a destination Wrexham is. I was delighted to see so many local groups and organisations represented as well as ones from across Wales, showing the diversity of Wales and its inclusivity. As a Welsh learner myself it was an ideal opportunity to practise and thank you to those who were patient with me! I also know that the city centre has seen lots of visitors taking the opportunity for some time out from the Maes. It's been great to see businesses able to take the opportunity to extend their opening or diversify their offering or increase their production to meet the demand. The Eisteddfod also coincided with the Play Day on Wednesday where so many children and their families were enjoying the activities on offer. A huge thank you to all involved in this wonderful annual event. There are plenty of excellent developments in the city centre, such as the Butchers' Market and the updating of High Street which are part of Welsh Government's Transforming Towns fund which Cabinet Secretary Jane Bryant was able to see for herself last week. The transformation of the old library into an arts and cultural hub and of course the Museum of Two Halves which will be open next year. The Eisteddfod also saw the announcement of a partnership between Coleg Cambria and Wrexham University working together with Bangor University and Grŵp Llandrillo Menai to form the North Wales Tertiary Alliance (NWTA). The aim is to strengthen education, skills and support economic growth and opportunity across North Wales. This can only be of benefit to young people and learners across Wrexham and could not be more welcome.
