The Swedish embassy in Cairo celebrated Sweden's National Day by emphasizing shared commitments to climate action and showcasing Swedish innovations driving sustainable development in Egypt.
Sweden celebrates its National Day every year on 6 June.
The day highlights two historical events: Gustav Vasa's election as King of Sweden on 6 June 1523 and the approval of an important constitution on 6 June 1809.
Both occasions are important milestones in the kingdom's history and laid the foundation for Sweden's development as a modern European nation state.
To mark the anniversary, the Swedish embassy in Cairo hosted a grand event on 18 June 2025 at the residence of Swedish Ambassador to Egypt Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt in Zamalek.
This year's National Day celebration in Cairo carried a special message: a shared commitment to climate action, sustainability, and green innovation.
The event brought together Egyptian and Swedish partners to commemorate the contribution of Swedish cutting-edge innovations in addressing climate change.
The day highlighted Sweden's global leadership in sustainable development and its strong cooperation with Egypt on environmental issues.
In his speech, Ambassador Juhlin-Dannfelt said: "Climate change is not just an environmental issue but a human issue, a development issue, and a matter of justice."
"Sweden has set ambitious goals to become one of the world's first fossil-free welfare nations. We are investing in clean energy, circular economy models, and sustainable urban development not only at home, but through partnerships around the world,' he added.
The Swedish ambassador also underlined Sweden's support for Egypt's environmental agenda, highlighting the growing number of Swedish companies contributing to sustainable development in Egypt.
'Swedish businesses are key drivers of this transformation. Across industries from transport to textiles, from digital infrastructure to design, Swedish companies are embedding sustainability into their core. They are showing that green growth is not only possible, but profitable and indeed necessary for our planet,' the ambassador noted.
Furthermore, he expressed his pride in seeing the growing collaboration between Sweden and Egypt in many of these areas.
"Together, we are exploring new opportunities in areas such as sustainable energy and transport. We believe that by working together across borders and sectors, we can build a more sustainable and inclusive future for all,' he stated.

Iran says arrests 'European' accused of spying for Israel - Region

Iranian authorities arrested on Monday a European national on suspicion of spying for Israel, state TV reported, as fighting raged between the foes for the 11th day. State television cited judicial authorities as saying that a spy for Israel was arrested in the western province of Hamadan, adding that the "spy is a citizen of a European country", without elaborating. "The spy entered the country disguised as a tourist and continued the mission of networking, gathering information, and disrupting offensive and missile systems in Iran," it added. Fighting between Iran and Israel erupted on June 13 after Israel launched devastating strikes on the Islamic republic. Iran has since vowed swift trials for people arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Israel. Iranian media has reported multiple arrests of individuals accused of spying for Israel in several parts of Iran. Authorities have meanwhile announced the execution of several people convicted of collaborating with Israel's spy agency, the Mossad. On Friday, media reported that another European national was arrested on suspicion of espionage. Mehr news agency later that day published a video saying the Revolutionary Guards took in custody a German national in Markazi province, west of Tehran. It said he was suspected of being "a spy who had entered Iran disguised as a tourist". He was also accused of approaching an "ammunition depot, an army barracks, missile tunnels and an air base to get information from them". Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

President El-Sisi, Greece PM discuss Israel-Iran war, ongoing Gaza tragedy - Foreign Affairs

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a phone call on Monday the importance of de-escalating the ongoing war between Israel and Iran, with both stressing that this escalation should not overshadow the tragedy in the Gaza Strip. Presidential Spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy said the Greek prime minister was eager to hear President El-Sisi's views on the latest regional developments. During the call, both parties highlighted the importance of stopping the ongoing escalation between Israel and Iran. They emphasized that a political solution through negotiations is the only way to resolve the conflict and avoid further turmoil. The two leaders also expressed deep concern that continuing military operations could further inflame the region, negatively impact all the Middle East peoples, and threaten regional and global peace and security. Moreover, both sides stressed that the current escalation between Iran and Israel should not overshadow the ongoing tragedy in the Gaza Strip. In this respect, they reaffirmed the urgency of halting the continued aggression on Gaza and ending the civilians' suffering, especially with the restrictions imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid. According to El-Shennawy, the call addressed other key regional issues, including the delimitation of maritime borders in the Eastern Mediterranean and illegal migration from the south toward Greece. They also discussed developments in Libya, underscoring the importance of forming a new, unified Libyan government responsible for holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. El-Sisi and Mitsotakis expressed support for the efforts of the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State to agree on a practical and inclusive roadmap. Bilateral ties El-Shennawy said both parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the positive momentum in bilateral relations and exploring broader horizons for cooperation in various fields, particularly in the economic and energy sectors. Meanwhile, President El-Sisi emphasized Egypt's commitment to protecting all religious sanctities on its soil, expressing respect for Saint Catherine's Monastery in particular, given its religious and spiritual significance. He highlighted that this was evident in the recent ruling issued by the state regarding the monastery. The president affirmed that the monastery would remain protected and stressed the importance of correcting the misinformation circulating in Europe. Earlier in June, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty discussed the status of Saint Catherine's Monastery in South Sinai with his Greek counterpart, Georgios Gerapetritis. FM Abdelatty asserted that the latest ruling regarding the monastery and its associated historic sites is non-negotiable. He explained that the ruling upholds the monastery's spiritual significance and the monks' right to continue using it, its surrounding lands, and its religious and archaeological zones uninterruptedly. Oil prices seesaw as investors await Iran response to US strikes - Economy

Oil prices wobbled and stock markets wavered Monday as traders awaited Tehran's response to US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend. US and European stocks retreated while Asian equities were mixed, with markets keeping a close eye on whether Iran will block the crucial Strait of Hormuz, which carries one-fifth of global oil output. When trading opened on Monday, international benchmark crude contract Brent and US equivalent WTI both jumped more than four percent to hit their highest price since January. They later dipped briefly into the red and then wobbled, standing up 0.3 percent as Wall Street opened for trading. "Will Iran choose to choke off the Strait of Hormuz or not? That is the big question," said Bjarne Schieldrop, chief commodities analyst at SEB bank. But, "looking at the oil price this morning it is clear that the oil market doesn't assign a very high probability of it happening," he added. Iran is the world's ninth-biggest oil-producing country, exporting just under half of the 3.3 million barrels it produces per day. "The prevailing view appears to be that the US involvement will prove limited militarily, yet effective, by seriously undermining Iran's nuclear ambitions," said David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation. "Investors are also speculating that Iran's ability to retaliate has been severely restricted," he added. Tensions remained elevated however as Iran and Israel intensified attacks on each other on the war's 11th day. "The markets are not yet reacting with any degree of panic to the US airstrike on Iran's nuclear facilities as they await to see how Tehran responds," said AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould. Wall Street stocks opened slightly lower, with the S&P 500 index slipping 0.1 percent. In Europe, sentiment on the Paris and Frankfurt stock markets was also hit by a closely watched survey that showed eurozone business activity was almost stagnant again in June. London's stock exchange was lower with shares in airlines, including EasyJet and British Airways-owner IAG, suffering losses on fears of rising energy costs and disruptions in travel to the Middle East. In Asia, Tokyo was lower while Hong Kong and Shanghai gained. "So far, satellite images reportedly suggest that oil continues to flow through the Strait, which may explain the muted market reaction to the news," said Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote Bank. She added that there is optimism that Iran will avoid full-blown retaliation "to prevent its own oil facilities from becoming targets and to avoid a widening conflict that could hurt China -- its biggest oil customer." But "if things get uglier" the price of US crude could even spike beyond $100 per barrel, she said. Brent was trading at above $77 per barrel on Monday while WTI was around $74. The dollar rose against other currencies but analysts questioned to what extent this would hold out. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
