Swedish embassy National Day celebration in Cairo focuses on climate action, green innovation
The Swedish embassy in Cairo celebrated Sweden's National Day by emphasizing shared commitments to climate action and showcasing Swedish innovations driving sustainable development in Egypt.
Sweden celebrates its National Day every year on 6 June.
The day highlights two historical events: Gustav Vasa's election as King of Sweden on 6 June 1523 and the approval of an important constitution on 6 June 1809.
Both occasions are important milestones in the kingdom's history and laid the foundation for Sweden's development as a modern European nation state.
To mark the anniversary, the Swedish embassy in Cairo hosted a grand event on 18 June 2025 at the residence of Swedish Ambassador to Egypt Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt in Zamalek.
This year's National Day celebration in Cairo carried a special message: a shared commitment to climate action, sustainability, and green innovation.
The event brought together Egyptian and Swedish partners to commemorate the contribution of Swedish cutting-edge innovations in addressing climate change.
The day highlighted Sweden's global leadership in sustainable development and its strong cooperation with Egypt on environmental issues.
In his speech, Ambassador Juhlin-Dannfelt said: "Climate change is not just an environmental issue but a human issue, a development issue, and a matter of justice."
"Sweden has set ambitious goals to become one of the world's first fossil-free welfare nations. We are investing in clean energy, circular economy models, and sustainable urban development not only at home, but through partnerships around the world,' he added.
The Swedish ambassador also underlined Sweden's support for Egypt's environmental agenda, highlighting the growing number of Swedish companies contributing to sustainable development in Egypt.
'Swedish businesses are key drivers of this transformation. Across industries from transport to textiles, from digital infrastructure to design, Swedish companies are embedding sustainability into their core. They are showing that green growth is not only possible, but profitable and indeed necessary for our planet,' the ambassador noted.
Furthermore, he expressed his pride in seeing the growing collaboration between Sweden and Egypt in many of these areas.
"Together, we are exploring new opportunities in areas such as sustainable energy and transport. We believe that by working together across borders and sectors, we can build a more sustainable and inclusive future for all,' he stated.

The celebration featured an exhibition by 18 Swedish companies operating in Egypt, where they showcased their innovative products and services.
Guests had the opportunity to engage with industry leaders, discuss how Swedish companies contribute to addressing climate change in Egypt, and explore potential collaborations.
The exhibition highlighted the significant contributions made by Swedish businesses to Egypt's economic and environmental development.

"The embassy is charged with sustaining and developing relations between Sweden and Egypt within a wide range of political, commercial, economic, and cultural matters of mutual interest,' he concluded.
