RAIPUR:
Enforcement Directorate
arrested on Friday Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, from his residence in Bhilai after the agency conducted an early morning search at his premises in connection with an alleged Rs 2,100 crore liquor scam during his father's tenure as CM.
Chaitanya was presented at a special PMLA court in Raipur which sent him to five-day ED custody, an agency official said, adding that Chaitanya did not cooperate during the searches. The father-son duo stays in the same house, while Baghel also has an MLA residence in Raipur. When ED carried out searches, Baghel was at his Raipur residence and was proceeding to Vidhan Sabha.
The timing of the raid, on the last day of the assembly session, triggered sharp political reactions, particularly from the opposition Congress.
Bid to suppress debate on tree-felling: Congress
ED's early-morning raid and the subsequent arrest of former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel's son Chaitanya set off sharp reactions, with Congress alleging that the move was designed to suppress discussion on deforestation in Tamnar region of Raigarh district linked to a particular industrialist.
ED had earlier searched Chaitanya Baghel's premises on March 10 while probing some transactions allegedly linking him and his entities to 'proceeds of crime' in the liquor 'scam' case.

The agency did not disclose details of the charges against Chaitanya, but in an earlier press note, it had claimed that some senior bureaucrat, having protection of 'top executive of the state', carried out the scam.
Reacting to the arrest, Baghel Senior said the Centre was misusing its agencies to target opposition netas. 'To please their master PM Modi and Amit Shah, they have sent ED to my house. We won't be scared or bow down,' he said.
He, however, said he would cooperate with the probe.
In this case, ED had in Jan arrested former excise minister Kawasi Lakhma; Anwar Dhebar, brother of Raipur mayor and Congress's Aijaz Dhebar; and senior babus, including IAS officer Anil Tuteja and a telecom service officer, Arunpati Tripathi.
After the arrest of Lakhma, ED had claimed that he was 'aware of the complete affairs of the liquor scam, yet he did nothing to stop it'.
The agency has accused Lakhma of receiving Rs 2 crore every month from the syndicate involved in illegal liquor trade.
ED had also said Lakhma played an important role in policy change, which led to the introduction of FL-10A licence in Chhattisgarh. 'He was an integral part of the syndicate and assisted it by manoeuvring the process and procedures as per their direction,' it said. The agency has so far attached assets worth over Rs 200 crore in the case.
Baghel later said, 'The adjournment motion moved by Congress in the Chhattisgarh assembly over tree felling being carried out by Adani Group in Tamnar was disallowed by Speaker Raman Singh. The opposition alleged that there has been no adherence to the PESA Act, no compliance with directives issued by the National Green Tribunal, and even the resolution unanimously passed by the state assembly has been disregarded.
Not even a discussion was permitted.'
Bringing an adjournment motion in the assembly, leader of the opposition Charandas Mahant and Baghel alleged in their speeches that 'Tamnar coal mine, which has been allotted to Maharashtra State Power Generation Company with its mine operator and developer being Adani, is being run solely for the benefit of a single industrialist, while local residents are being harassed and displaced'.

Riyal-life trap: Bengaluru merchant loses Rs 4.5 lakh to currency-exchange fraudsters

Bengaluru: In a stunning drama involving foreign currency, an elderly woman seeking help and sympathy, and a shocking lapse of judgment, a 42-year-old cloth-seller walked into a trap stitched together by fraudsters and was defrauded of Rs 4.5 lakh in a currency exchange deal gone awry. According to his complaint with police, Zia-ul-Haq, a resident of Shivajinagar and from Assam, sells clothes by the roadside in Indiranagar. Late June, a woman met him on the pretext of purchasing clothes. During interaction, she asked him if he knew anyone who could exchange Saudi riyals for Indian currency. When Haq informed her Shivajinagar has a foreign currency exchange office, the woman took down his number and said an aged woman staying one floor above her house had a bundle of notes and sought help in conversion. Around 9pm the same day, Haq received a call from the woman, who handed the phone to her neighbour, said to be a pourakarmika. The elderly woman claimed she had stumbled upon a packet of 1,626 Saudi riyals with 50-riyal face value while clearing the road. She claimed she was a widow, her son was mentally ill, and her two daughters didn't have much knowledge about financial matters. Haq told TOI that he informed the woman the notes might be fake. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dolly Parton, 79, Takes off Her Makeup and Leaves Us Without Words The Noodle Box Undo But she forced him to verify a few notes at the currency-exchange desk. Initially, she offered to accompany the cloth vendor to the currency exchange shop, but beat a hasty retreat with the now-known ruse: "I'm busy with work, please help me." She pestered him with endless phone calls seeking help. "I agreed to buy the riyals for Rs 4.5 lakh. I borrowed money from my acquaintances and called the woman. She asked me to come over to her home. When I reached Nagawara bus stop on June 30, she insisted I meet her near the bus stop as a few persons fought near their house and one person was attacked with lethal weapons and police were at the spot. The woman who first visited him in Indiranagar came with a male friend. They said they would exchange the notes on the road. When I refused, they showed a bundle wrapped in cloth. Admittedly, I went completely blind for a few seconds, took the bundle without opening or examining it and handed them Rs 4.5 lakh as promised," Haq said. And the couple vanished out of sight in seconds. After returning home, Haq opened the bundle only to find newspaper cuttings. He called the woman's number, which was switched off. A senior police officer said Haq filed a complaint two weeks after the crime. A case of cheating has been registered, and efforts are on to nab them, he added.

SIT to probe illegal kidney racket

1 2 Namakkal/Trichy: A special investigation team (SIT) led by S Vineeth, project director of Tamil Nadu Health System Reform Programme (TNHSRP), has been set up to probe the illegal kidney sale racket in Namakkal. Official sources said the team will investigate transactions between donors, who allegedly sold their kidneys for financial gain, and the recipients, in addition to the role of private hospitals suspected of facilitating the process. The team carried out document verification at Tiruchengode revenue divisional officer's office on Tuesday. A team member said they will be conduct investigations in these areas for two days. Tiruchengode revenue divisional officer (RDO) Suganthi, Namakkal joint director Dr Rajmohan, Kumarapalayam taluk tahsildar Sivakumar and Pallipalayam police inspector Malarvizhi were present. Later in the evening, the SIT held an inquiry at a private hospital in Perambalur over allegations that surgeries were done there. "SIT chief S Vineeth is present along with other members, two joint directors of health services, and a deputy superintendent of police," a senior official told TOI, adding that the probe may continue through the night. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The inquiry scheduled for Monday at the private college was called off midway following a review meeting in Namakkal during which the SIT was constituted. The probe also follows a series of statements circulating on social media from kidney donors. Earlier last week, private hospitals in Trichy and Erode came under the scanner. While the hospital in Trichy was served a notice, a hospital in Erode was barred from conducting surgeries until further notice. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, deputy leader of the opposition R B Udhayakumar criticised the state govt over the racket, while TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai called for strict action against those involved. Namakkal police are also on the lookout for the broker M Annandhan, against whom a case has been registered. This follows video clips of donors surfacing on social media along with reports that workers employed in power loom units and dyeing mills in Pallipalayam and nearby areas in Namakkal were being lured by brokers to sell their kidneys for Rs5–10 lakh. Though a few more hospitals in Trichy are being named, JD sources confirmed that the inquiry has not been extended beyond the one hospital as yet.
