New details have emerged in John Elway's fatal golf cart crash that killed his friend, Jeff Sperbeck.
CBS affiliate 9 News reported on Tuesday, May 6, that Elway, 64, left a private function at Madison Club in La Quinta with Sperbeck, Sperbeck's wife Cori, Elway's girlfriend, son Jack and additional friends on April 26. The group reportedly had a caravan of three or four golf carts designated to transport around 10 to 15 people a quarter-mile to Elway's house at the private golf resort's community.
Jack had a group with him and rode in a cart ahead of Elway. In addition to Elway himself, his cart was reportedly transporting his girlfriend, Sperbeck, Cori and The Challenge star Johnny Bananas. Sperbeck told his wife to sit up front with Elway and Elway's girlfriend while he rode in the back with Bananas, 42, per the outlet.
Sperbeck allegedly fell off the cart while Elway was driving. Multiple sources told the outlet that there was 'no swerving or horseplay' and 'no one was drunk.' The golf cart also allegedly did not hit anything.

It was previously reported that Elway, Sperbeck and their group had attended the nearby Stagecoach music festival that day. However, 9 News reported that the group went the previous day and opted not to go the following day due to 'inclement weather.'
News broke on April 30 that Sperbeck died as the result of a traumatic head injury as a result of the accident. It was later revealed that Elway called 911 after Sperbeck hit his head. When paramedics arrived on the scene, Sperbeck was reportedly still breathing and was transported to the hospital. Sperbeck was placed on life support before succumbing to his injuries days later.
Following the news of Sperbeck's passing, Elway released a statement mourning the death of his friend and former manager.

'I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,' Elway said. 'There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.'
Law enforcement subsequently opened an investigation. On Friday, May 2, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told The Denver Post that 'nothing that we have found' indicated law enforcement needed to be involved.
'This appears to be a horrific accident,' Bianco said. 'And unfortunately for all of those involved, one of the people – well, a couple of them – happen to be very high-profile celebrities. And that makes this more of an issue than it probably should be.'

Unbelievable video shows Aussie reporter shot in the leg by police during LA unrest

Unbelievable footage has captured the moment an Australian journalist was shot in the leg by a police officer while reporting from the violent protests currently sweeping across downtown Los Angeles in response to sweeping deportations by the Trump administration. Nine reporter Lauren Tomasi was filming a live TV cross in the city's central business district during the protests when an officer suddenly takes aim and appears to intentionally shoot her with a rubber bullet from behind. The unrest has followed a wave of mass deportation raids that began on June 6, triggering outrage across the country's second most populous city. "After hours of standing off, this situation has now rapidly deteriorated... the LAPD moving in on horseback, firing rubber bullets, moving them on through the heart of LA," she said. The camera briefly pans to the left to show a row of armed officers, one of whom lifts his rifle and appears to aim directly at Tomasi. "You just f*****g shot the reporter," a voice can be heard yelling in the background, as she screams in pain. Nine reports Tomasi was left sore but otherwise unharmed. The live broadcast was suddenly cut short in order to allow Tomasi and the cameraman to move to safety. U.S. Correspondent Lauren Tomasi has been caught in the crossfire as the LAPD fired rubber bullets at protesters in the heart of Los Angeles. #9NewsLATEST: — 9News Australia (@9NewsAUS) June 9, 2025 Tensions flared after federal immigration agents carried out coordinated operations, arresting over 100 people in areas like the Fashion District and Paramount on Friday. What started as demonstrations quickly turned volatile, with clashes between protesters and authorities escalating into violence. Police responded with crowd-control measures after objects were thrown at officers, prompting the declaration of a citywide tactical alert. Los Angeles police declared one rally near City Hall to be an "unlawful assembly", alleging that some protesters threw concrete, bottles and other objects at police. The unrest deepened after President Trump ordered the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops to Los Angeles, a move that drew sharp condemnation from state and city officials. Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass criticised the federal response as excessive and politically driven. As protests continue, concerns are mounting over public safety and the impact on major upcoming events, including international sports tournaments scheduled in the city. Demonstrators shouted "shame on you" at police, and some appeared to throw objects, according to video. A group of protesters blocked the 101 Freeway, a major thoroughfare in downtown Los Angeles. California Governor Gavin Newsom said he requested the Trump administration withdraw its order to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops in Los Angeles County, calling it unlawful. Newsom accused Trump of trying to manufacture a crisis and violating California's state sovereignty. "These are the acts of a dictator, not a President," he wrote in a post on X. The White House disputed Newsom's characterisation, saying in a statement that "everyone saw the chaos, violence and lawlessness". Trump called the demonstrators "violent, insurrectionist mobs" and said he was directing his cabinet officers "to take all such action necessary" to stop what he called "riots". I have formally requested the Trump Administration rescind their unlawful deployment of troops in Los Angeles county and return them to my command. We didn't have a problem until Trump got involved. But the sweeping enforcement measures have also included people legally residing in the country, some with permanent residence, and have led to legal challenges. Trump's justification for the National Guard deployment cited a provision of Title 10 of the US Code on the Armed Forces. However, Title 10 also says the "orders for these purposes shall be issued through the governors of the States". with Reuters, AAP Do you have a story tip? Tonys broadcast hit with sound complaints as viewers beg CBS to ‘turn on the mics'

Viewers tuning into the 78th annual Tony Awards have complained about sound issues affecting the broadcast. Live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City, the awards ceremony is being shown on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. While fans were impressed with the performances, they were disappointed by the sound while presenters, winners, and performers — like Sarah Snook and Jonathan Groff — were at the mic. 'Who's on the sound at the tonys right now TURN ON THE DAMN MICS,' one frustrated fan wrote on X. 'They need to fix these sound issues while it's still early,' someone else said, while another agreed: 'Terrible sound.' 'The sound problems are really putting a hamper on the show performances. I could barely hear what Jonathan Groff was singing sometimes,' another shared. 'Why cant the #Tonys ever get the sound mix right on the Broadcast? The shows on Broadway do this 8 shows a week, its insane that @CBS can't ever get this right for one night a year,' someone else said. 'The sound mixing on the Tonys is horrendous,' another complained. The sound problems are really putting a hamper on the show performances. 'The sound issues are crazy to me. Really messing up Nicole's big moment and everyone's big moment. Get it together before Hamilton,' one viewer wrote. The original cast is reuniting to celebrate the hit musical's tenth anniversary on Broadway. Hamilton received a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations in 2016 and ultimately won 11 awards, including Best Musical. Also performing during the main broadcast were the companies of nominated musicals Death Becomes Her, Maybe Happy Ending, Buena Vista Social Club, Floyd Collins, Gypsy, Maybe Happy Ending, Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical, Pirates! The Penzance Musical, Sunset Blvd., Just In Time, and Real Women Have Curves. The first part of this year's ceremony, The Tony Awards: Act One, began streaming promptly at 6:40 p.m. ET on Pluto TV. The national broadcast, hosted by Cynthia Erivo live from Radio City Music Hall, began at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. Succession star Snook took home the evening's first acting award for her expansive, one-woman take on The Picture of Dorian Gray. Paul Tazewell won for Death Becomes Her, marking the first time in 73 years that a costume designer has won an Oscar and a Tony in the same year. He won an Oscar earlier this year for Wicked: Part I. Kara Young also made history later in the evening when she became the second person to win back-to-back Tonys in the featured actress in a play category. She's already made history this year by earning her fourth consecutive acting nomination.
