Florida assistant Kevin Hovde relishes Final Four run before leaving to coach Columbia

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Decked out in a Final Four T-shirt, Kevin Hovde answered a FaceTime call from Columbia athletic director Peter Pilling, who offered congratulations and his patience in giving the Florida assistant another week before reporting to his new gig as the Lions' coach.
What a thrilling last hurrah for Hovde alongside longtime friend and Florida coach Todd Golden before he departs to begin leading his own program at age 36.
'We'll finish this out,' a beaming Hovde said Saturday night outside top-seeded Florida's celebratory locker room following an 84-79 win over No. 3 seed Texas Tech. 'It's amazing really being a part of it and seeing how far we've come being three years at Florida, where the program was three years ago when we took it over and now for it to culminate in this.'
Hovde, who was hired on March 24 as Columbia's coach, will help guide the Gators to their first Final Four since 2014. After that, he will relocate to New York City, leaving the Southeastern Conference for the Ivy League.
'I'm just glad that Peter Pilling, the AD at Columbia, made the right choice and gave this opportunity to Kevin,' Golden said. 'They're really fortunate to have him, and he's fortunate for the opportunity. And he's going to do a great job. There's no doubt in my mind about that. I'm going to miss him. But I think the sign of having success is when guys work with you or they play for you and as they move on, their opportunities continue to get better.'
Hovde isn't the only Florida assistant on the move to become a head coach once the season ends. John Andrzejek is taking over at Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
First, 'we're going to cut some more nets down,' Hovde said of his chat with Pilling about the immediate priorities before the big move. 'Unreal.'
For Hovde, this is a return to Columbia, where he spent five seasons — two under Golden — after starting as the director of basketball operations in 2011 before being promoted to assistant coach the following season. The Lions finished 25-10 during his last season in 2015-16 and won the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Hovde then went to San Francisco and Richmond before going to Florida with Golden in 2022.
'It's amazing,' Hovde said while also mentioning former Columbia coach Kyle Smith, now at Stanford. 'He's kind of the one who started it all, all of us back at Columbia, which is just amazing I'm going back there and it's connecting back to that. Myself, Todd, Carlin (Hartman), John Andrzejek, Jon Safir are on our staff. It all started in New York City 15 years ago.'
And Golden isn't quite ready to let Hovde go. There's scouting to do, an offensive game plan to develop, logistics to sort out. The Gators are headed back to Gainesville, where they expect to arrive on campus in time to watch fellow No. 1 seed Auburn take on second-seeded Michigan State in the Elite Eight to determine Florida's next opponent.
'He's an amazing man and we've shared a lot of times together in our coaching career,' Golden said of Hovde. 'I've worked with him I think every year but three of my coaching career. He's made me a much better coach. He's always run my offense. But he's like having another head coach in the program. Just incredibly bright, just super mature, great leader, super consistent. He deserves this opportunity.
Senior guard Will Richard, who has been with this coaching staff all three years, is thrilled for Hovde.
'I'm definitely proud of him for getting that job,' Richard said, 'but we need him for another week. We've got two more games left.'

Panthers rout Oilers in Game 3 of Stanley Cup Final before things get chippy late
There was no close game to worry about, no late comeback, overtime thriller to wait out. Just simple domination by the Florida Panthers on their home ice that has the potential to flip the Stanley Cup Final fully in their favor. Florida played its game to a tee and got contributions from throughout the lineup in its 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 3 on Monday at Amerant Bank Arena. The Panthers now lead the best-of-7 series 2-1, with Game 4 at 8 p.m. Thursday in Sunrise. After the first two games of the series saw the Oilers tie the game in the third period and go to overtime — with Edmonton winning Game 1 4-3 and Florida winning Game 2 5-4 in double overtime — the Panthers took the lead in the opening minute on Monday and never looked back. Florida got goals from Brad Marchand, Carter Verhaeghe, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad and Evan Rodrigues while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 31 of 32 shots he faced — including all 17 at even strength — to stymie Edmonton's offense. By the opening minutes of the third period, the Panthers' onslaught was so strong that Edmonton pulled goaltender Stuart Skinner, who gave up five goals on just 23 shots against. And by the midway mark of the third period, a full-out brawl ensued after Trent Frederic tried to punch Bennett in the back of the head, missed and then cross-checked him. That set of a slew of skirmishes, with the headliner being Florida's Jonah Gadjovich dropping the gloves with Edmonton's Darnell Nurse. A half-dozen players — Florida's Gadjovich, Bennett and A.J. Greer; Edmonton's Frederic, Nurse and Mattias Ekholm — were ejected afterward. A seventh in Edmonton's Evander Kane was sent off a few minutes later after slashing Verhaeghe while Verhaeghe was down on the ice. A few more Edmonton cheap shots followed in the final minutes of the game. But all of this came after the Panthers were in complete control of the game. Florida went up 1-0 just 56 seconds into regulation with Marchand scoring his fourth goal of the series and eighth of the postseason off a feed from Anton Lundell from behind the left post. It was the fastest goal ever scored by a Panthers player in the Stanley Cup Final, surpassing Bennett's mark of 2:07 set in Game 2 on Friday. At 37 years old, Marchand is the oldest player to score in each of the first three games of a Stanley Cup Final, replacing Frank Mahavolich, who was 35 when he did it in the 1973 Stanley Cup Final for Montreal against the Rangers. Florida then doubled its lead on a Carter Verhaeghe power play goal with 2:15 left in the opening period with a snipe from the left circle on a feed from Evan Rodrigues. It capped a first period that had eight penalties, similar to Game 2 in Edmonton. The Oilers cut their deficit to one goal on a Corey Perry power-play goal 1:40 into the second period, but the Panthers would attack in waves from there to rebuild their lead. Reinhart made it 3-1 three minutes into the second period after Aleksander Barkov forced John Klingberg to turn the puck over near the boards in the Florida zone. Verhaeghe recovered and fed the puck to Reinhart up close. Bennett then pushed Florida's lead to 4-1 7:26 into the middle frame on a breakaway after splitting Edmonton's defense on a feed from Eetu Luostarinen. And then Ekblad and Rodrigues capped Florida's scoring with power-play goals in the third period. This story will be updated.

By JIMMY GOLEN AP Sports Writer Jake Mangum had four hits, and Junior Caminero drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning on Monday night as the Tampa Bay Rays took advantage of Boston mistakes to win 10-8 and spoil the debut of top Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony. Tampa loaded the bases off Zack Kelly in the 11th and Caminero took a 3-2 pitch for a walk. Mangum followed with a chopper to the right side that was fielded by first baseman Romy Gonzalez, but his throw to Kelly (1-3) was awkward and late. Ian Seymour pitched two innings in his major league debut for the victory as Tampa won for the sixth time in seven games. Anthony was hitless in four at-bats, with one walk and an RBI groundout in the ninth that cut the deficit to 7-6. Kristian Campbell followed by hitting a high chopper over the mound and beating the throw to first for a game-tying single. Anthony also let a single roll under his glove in right field for an error that led to an unearned run in the fifth - one of two official errors to go with a run-scoring wild pitch, a hit batsman and a botched infield fly. Anthony was due to lead off the bottom half of the 11th, but Rob Refsnyder pinch hit for him and walked. With two on and two out, Gonzalez took a 3-2 pitch for a third strike and was ejected for arguing the call; the Red Sox had no other batters to replace him. No matter, Ceddanne Rafaela lined the next pitch to short for the third out. Key moment Taylor Walls hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to give Tampa an 8-7 lead. Boston tied it in the bottom half when first baseman Jonathan Aranda dropper a grounder that would have been the final out, then threw wide of Seymour for a second error, this one allowing the tying run to score. Key stat Anthony's line was 0 for 4 with one RBI, one walk, one strikeout and one fielding error. Up next Tampa RHP Ryan Pepiot (3-5) faces Boston RHP Lucas Giolito on Tuesday in the second of three games in the series.
