Southeast Asian currencies opened lower and the region's stocks look set to drop after Asian emerging nations were given some of the biggest tariff increases by US President Donald Trump.
The Thai baht slipped as much as 0.8% against the dollar, while the Malaysian ringgit and South Korean won also weakened. Equities in the region, which are some of the world's worst performers this year, are set to extend this year's losses as the higher tariffs weigh on regional economies.

Taiwan Aims to Placate Trump With 2026 Military Spending Boost

(Bloomberg) -- Taiwan has proposed stepping up defense spending next year, a move intended to mollify President Donald Trump, who has called on the democracy to do more to defend itself from China's threats. The government is proposing a military budget of NT$949.5 billion ($31.2 billion) for 2026, according to a statement from the cabinet in Taipei on Thursday – a figure that for the time includes spending on the Coast Guard and veteran pensions. The new plan represents a nearly 23% increase from last year's proposal. Why New York City Has a Fleet of New EVs From a Dead Carmaker Trump Takes Second Swing at Cutting Housing Assistance for Immigrants Chicago Schools Seeks $1 Billion of Short-Term Debt as Cash Gone A London Apartment Tower With Echoes of Victorian Rail and Ancient Rome The cabinet said the figure would raise defense spending to 3.32% of economic output — higher than a 3% target set by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te in February. Part of the reason Lai wants more money for defense is Trump has questioned the self-ruled archipelago's commitment to defending itself from China, which sees Taiwan as part of its territory that must be brought under its control by force if needed. The final amount Taiwan spends on the military in 2026 will likely be different because the budget will have to go before the legislature, where the opposition holds a slim majority. Potentially foreshadowing how difficult the approval process for the spending plans might be for the government in Taipei, a special bill that provided billions of dollars of new funding for the military was subjected to weeks of wrangling between opposition and ruling party lawmakers before it was approved last month. --With assistance from Chien-Hua Wan. JPMorgan Says Ethereum Is Poised for ‘Meteoric' Growth. Should You Buy ETH Now?

Ethereum (ETHUSD) is tearing higher in 2025, outperforming Bitcoin (BTCUSD) with its nearly 60% rise over the past six months. Generally, Ethereum is seen as the only altcoin, or alternative cryptocurrency, with true 'staying power,' as countless other projects are based on the Ethereum blockchain. These projects mint their own tokens on the Ethereum blockchain following certain standards, like ERC-20 for new cryptocurrencies and ERC-721 for non-fungible tokens (NFTs). In exchange for granting use of its network, people pay 'gas fees' in ETH that go back to the blockchain. In recent years, though, Ethereum has had to battle it out with Bitcoin as BTC has become more accessible to the mainstream through spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Things are changing, and investors are reaping the rewards, as evidenced by the YTD win. Ethereum now has its own spot ETFs, so both Bitcoin and Ethereum are seeing significant inflows. And JPMorgan believes Ethereum could eventually come out on top. Why JPMorgan Is Bullish on ETH If you are a crypto veteran, you may remember the Terra Luna controversy. The Luna algorithmic stablecoin depegged from the U.S. dollar, and the entire project collapsed quickly. Trust in stablecoin projects was at an all-time low in the summer of 2022. In 2025, the environment is completely different due to governments and institutions legitimizing stablecoins, and cryptocurrencies at large. President Donald Trump, in particular, has spearheaded this, as he and First Lady Melania Trump both have their own cryptos. The Trump family's World Liberty Financial launched its own stablecoin called USD1. Even Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA) have been spooked into partnering up with crypto-related companies as an increasing number of merchants are accepting stablecoins. You may wonder how ETH benefits if it is not a stablecoin. Ethereum is a major beneficiary of this stablecoin boom as most stablecoins are also issued as ERC-20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. This is precisely why JPMorgan is bullish here. Approximately $138 billion worth of stablecoins are on the Ethereum blockchain, which is a 51% share of the stablecoin market. U.K. bank Standard Chartered sees the stablecoin market at $750 billion by the end of 2026. Why Stablecoin Issuers Like Ethereum Ethereum has made itself the most optimal chain for transacting with stablecoins. For example, Tron (TRXUSD) is a popular chain for transacting Tether USD (USDT), which is the most popular stablecoin at the moment. However, each transaction can run you back nearly $10. On the other hand, recent upgrades to the Ethereum network now allow USDT transactions for mere cents. This means that Ethereum is likely to remain the default Web 3.0 choice. Time to Buy ETH? While ETH is up over 211% from its trough in April, I still believe it can deliver significantly more upside. It is a buy hand-over-fist if you believe that the altseason is around the corner. If you are unaware of the term, it refers to a period of time where Bitcoin stalls out and altcoins start gaining rapidly. Each time Bitcoin has gained significantly, altcoins have followed suit a few months later. It is taking much longer this time for altcoins to catch up, but with Ethereum and potentially many other cryptos receiving their own spot ETFs soon, I wouldn't rule it out. ETH could soar past $10,000 or more in the next 12 months if the overdue altseason does happen. Will Ford Cut, Maintain, or Increase Its Dividend in 2025?

With a dividend yield of 5.2%, Ford (F) has one of the highest dividend yields among S&P 500 Index ($SPX) constituents. However, the company hasn't increased its regular dividends since 2022. In this article, we'll look at whether Ford will increase its dividend or rather cut it amid the hit from President Donald Trump's tariffs. To begin with, let's look at the recent history of Ford's dividend. Ford announced a dividend of $0.15 per share in January 2020, which was suspended as quickly as March of that year, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Ford's dividend was restored in October 2021, with a quarterly payout of $0.10 per share. The company increased its payout by 50% and announced a quarterly dividend of $0.15 in July 2022 as its earnings and cash flows rebounded. The company has since maintained the same quarterly dividend. Ford intends to return between 40% and 50% of its free cash flows to shareholders, and the company has been paying special dividends to help reach its distribution targets. This year, Ford paid a supplemental dividend of $0.15 to mark the company's third consecutive special dividend, after dishing out $0.18 last year. Ford paid a special dividend of $0.65 in 2023, which it attributed to the return on its investment in electric vehicle startup Rivian (RIVN). Ford's Cash Flows Have Been Stagnant Since Ford's dividends are dependent on its free cash flows, it would be prudent to look at that metric. Ford generated adjusted free cash flows of $6.7 billion last year, while the corresponding numbers in 2023 and 2022 were $6.8 billion and $9.1 billion, respectively. The spike in 2022 free cash flow was on account of the Rivian stake sale. Ford's adjusted cash flows were similar in the previous two years, which explains the stagnant regular dividend. For 2025, Ford has forecast free cash flows between $3.5 billion and $4.5 billion. The guidance assumes a net hit of $2 billion from Trump's tariffs. Detroit rival General Motors (GM) expects a gross tariff impact of between $4 billion and $5 billion but is hopeful of mitigating 30% through cost cuts, adjustments to manufacturing, and pricing actions. Here, it is worth noting that the tariff situation has been quite fluid. Moreover, other factors like the macro situation, including interest rate changes, will have influence on Ford's guidance. Ford has around 4 billion outstanding shares, and to maintain the current quarterly payout of $0.15 ($0.60 annually) it would have to pay around $2.4 billion as dividends in 2025. If the company were to meet the midpoint of its guidance, it would imply a payout ratio of 60%, which is higher than the targeted range. Ford Might Weigh Adjusting Its Dividend in 2026 Earlier this month, Ford announced further investments to build a $30,000 electric pickup, which it hailed as its next Model T moment. The company, like other automakers, might need to increase its U.S. manufacturing and sourcing footprint as Trump pushes for onshoring, which could mean higher capex. Even though maintaining the 2025 dividend could mean that Ford might need to overshoot its payout targets, I don't expect the company to slash its dividend this calendar year. That said, a hike looks to be off the table. However, if the tariff situation does not improve in Ford's favor or the automotive market fundamentals, particularly on pricing, worsen in 2026, Ford might struggle to continue with the current payout, and at some point, management might need to reconsider its strategy.
