Atlanta United break MLS transfer record to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath

Yahoo2 days ago
Atlanta United have signed Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath for a new MLS record fee of $22 million (£17.6 million) plus add-ons.
The move easily surpasses the $16.2 million FC Cincinnati paid to sign Kevin Denkey earlier this winter.

The 26-year-old, who has two caps for Ivory Coast, departs the Championship club after a successful 18 months, during which time he scored 29 goals in 67 appearances.
Lath's signature continues a very busy window for Atlanta, who confirmed the return of club legend Miguel Almirón on Thursday. Mateusz Klich has also signed from D.C. United.
Atlanta finished ninth in the Eastern Conference last season, but then upset Inter Miami in the first round of the playoffs, and will be looking to rejoin the top-tier sides in MLS in 2025.
The deal is also a record sale for Middlesbrough, overtaking Adama Traore's exit to Wolves in 2018/19.

Detroit Lions offensive line is a work in progress a year after being among NFL's best

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions had one of the NFL's best offensive lines last season. This year is more of a work in progress. Center Frank Ragnow's retirement and the loss of right guard Kevin Zeitler in free agency have opened up competition for at least two new starters. Graham Glasgow, who started at left guard last season and has experience at center, along with rookie Tate Ratledge are getting reps at center through four days of training camp. And then there's the banged-up veteran Taylor Decker at left tackle. 'It's been great. Tate, I thought, was doing a good job. Graham was in there today and I've been comfortable with Graham for quite some time,'' Lions quarterback Jared Goff said on Thursday. 'Whoever it ends up being I'll be good with.'' After Ratledge saw the bulk of center reps the first three days of camp, Glasgow took the center snaps Thursday. Ratledge played only guard at Georgia except for a few practice snaps at center. So he's adjusting to the NFL game and to playing a new position. 'I think just the speed of everything happening. At guard you have a little bit of a delay being off the ball and then, of course, you get up here and you're going against quicker guys,'' Ratledge said. He has no preference for guard or center. 'I enjoy football, it doesn't matter where I am on the field,'' said Ratledge, a second-round pick who sports a John Wayne tattoo on his left bicep. Coach Dan Campbell said earlier in the week that he will keep his eye on the offensive line. '(Ratledge is) getting it all at once. It's everything, it is. It's the mental and it's the technique of it. So, yeah, look we're putting a lot on him,'' Campbell said. 'He's drinking out of a fire hose right now. But there are things that we saw with him in college at Georgia that we felt like, 'You know what? We think this guy can play center.'' Decker remains sidelined while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but is expected to join the team after the Hall of Fame game on July 31. He's been on the sidelines at camp daily. 'The standard is the standard. We're expected to be one of the top offensive lines in the league,'' Decker said. 'You lose big pieces, but we've put those expectations on ourselves and put ourselves in a position where we're expected to perform a certain way and it doesn't matter.'' Pro Bowl right tackle Penei Sewell is healthy and practicing daily. Christian Mahogany has been a sort of utility lineman for the Lions the past couple of years. He played in seven games in 2024 and started two, including a playoff game. Kayode Awosika, who started 11 games at guard in 2024, will also contend for a starting guard spot. NOTES: Lions LB Alex Anzalone, who has not participated in camp, was on the sidelines again Thursday in street clothes. He told reporters earlier in the week that he is disappointed the Lions have not signed him to a contract extension. INJURIES: LB Derrick Barnes (hand) and CB Terrion Arnold (leg) left practice early to be evaluated further for their injuries. … CB Ennis Rakestraw (chest) was working on the sidelines but has not practiced since he was injured on Sunday. He's expected to return within days.

MLS defender Reggie Cannon: I'm focused on getting back to USMNT

Yahoo Sports contributors Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros are joined by Colorado Rapids defender Reggie Cannon who talks about his goal to get back to the United States Men's National Team and highlights how strong of a league MLS has become. Hear the full conversation on the 'The Cooligans' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Do you think the drama around the stuff outside of football affected either your place with the national team or your mentality or your connection to the team in some way, like, what's the plan and mission, because obviously I know you want to get called up again. I think everything in your life always has a role to play, and I definitely think it definitely did. But, you know, at the end of the day, I'm just gonna focus on playing my best football to get back there. I'm just focused on enjoying my football right now and playing my best for the Colorado Rapids and, you know, winning more games, getting them MLS Cup, like those are my goals, you know, personally, and that's ultimately what I need to focus on right now, and I know if those things happen then you know, the other side will happen too. You know, the other side will happen too, so, you know, I reminisce about my days with the national team and, you know, I'm so grateful that they happened. I think they helped me grow as a person, as a player, and, you know, hopefully I'll be back one day. But, you know, right now I know that if I play my best football, you know, I'll be back there just like the old days. So that's what I'm focused on right now. So that's what I'm focused on right now. Coming back from Europe, are you seeing the level of talent in MLS risen to a new level, and do you think that there is more undiscovered talent within the ranks at MLS that could even be more of a shout on the national team? 1000 billion percent, if I had to give a percentage. The MLS has improved significantly since I left, like it's a whole different league now, uh, the talent that they brought in, the young talent that's coming up through the ranks, the mentality of the league, like I think it's so much improved. And I think even a lot of European players are coming here now and seeing like, you just see the mentality over there is easy, you know, it's a tier league, whatever, they come here and they realize that it's a tough league to play in. It's very chaotic, it's very, there's a lot of transition, that high line, especially the way we play, like, it's a very intense game. Messi coming in was huge. In fact, where were you when you found out Messi was coming to MLS? I was still in Portugal, I think, and I literally when I saw the news, I literally showed my wife, and I was like, you've gotta be kidding me. Like the thing that I leave mess, I'm like, you've got to be kidding me, but you know, I still haven't had the chance to play against him, so I'm like, oh my gosh, I wish, I hope I get to. Close

Inter Miami's Lionel Messi to star in MLS TikTok livestream during August Leagues Cup match

'Messi cam' will track the Argentine star throughout entire match Stream will feature mobile-friendly vertical format with custom graphics Previous Messi-focused stream in Oct. 2024 drew 6.4 million viewers WHAT HAPPENED Major League Soccer announced Thursday that Lionel Messi will be the focus of an exclusive TikTok livestream during Inter Miami's Aug. 2 Leagues Cup matchup with Necaxa. The special broadcast will feature a dedicated camera tracking the 38-year-old Argentine superstar throughout the entire game, presented in a mobile-friendly vertical format with custom graphics. MLS is calling the broadcast series "Player Spotlight: Messi" and plans to produce a total of four such streams during the 2025 season. THE BIGGER PICTURE This continues an approach MLS first tested in October 2024, when a similar Messi-focused stream during his playoff debut attracted 6.4 million viewers across the league and team's TikTok pages, making it the most widely viewed sporting event in Apple history according to the company. The match, Messi's playoff debut, saw the Herons defeat Atlanta United 2-1 in game one of their Best-of-3 series that eventually saw the South Beach club eliminated in the opening round of the postseason. MLS commissioner Don Garber spoke Wednesday ahead of the MLS All-Star Game, claiming the league is averaging 120,000 unique viewers per season pass stream in 2025. The number is an "almost 50 percent" increase from last year, per Garber. In April, MLS and TikTok announced a multi-year partnership to bring live match highlights and fan reactions to the platform. Now, come the Leagues Cup, a live match will be shown as the Herons clash with Necaxa - a club co-owned by a group of A-list celebrities including Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, Mesut Özil, Kate Upton, Odell Beckham Jr., Justin Verlander, Victor Oladipo, and Eva Longoria. WHAT SETH BACON SAID 'Everything we're doing is focused on fan growth,' MLS EVP of media Seth Bacon said in an interview via Sportico. 'We're a league that is going to put the content where the people is on Apple, but we're also going to find you in other ways, so that you can see it, experience it, and then you know that it's on Apple.' 'We have the ability to say, 'Hey, come this way, or come this way, or come this way,' Bacon added. 'We've got ways to entertain and engage people, no matter what level of interest they have.' WHAT'S NEXT? Messi and his teammate Jordi Alba could face a suspension for Inter Miami's game against FC Cincinnati on July 26 after failing to show up for the MLS All-Star game. The TikTok stream will be the first of four planned "Player Spotlight: Messi" broadcasts scheduled for the 2025 season, though MLS has not yet announced the dates for the remaining three streams. Inter Miami will face Atlas first in the Leagues Cup on July 30 and then Necaxa on Aug. 2 before their final group stage game against Pumas UNAM on Aug. 6.
