COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Five graduating seniors in Logan County are getting a boost as they get ready to launch their careers.
The Logan County Collaborative presented five $1,000 grants to each student.
All of them have committed to begin their careers with local businesses in the fields of construction, skilled trades, manufacturing, or health care.
The grants are a first for the Logan County Collaborative — a business advisory committee that brings teachers, community leaders, and business leaders together to strategize how to best prepare workers for jobs in their communities.

Materion expands chip materials production to South Korea

This story was originally published on Manufacturing Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Manufacturing Dive newsletter. Engineered materials maker Materion is expanding its global semiconductor production with the purchase of a manufacturing facility in South Korea, the Ohio-based company said May 29. The investment, expected to close within 90 days, would strengthen Materion's position as a leading supplier of tantalum products used in semiconductor chips for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence applications. Tantalum is a rare earth metal that is highly corrosion-resistant. Materion said it agreed to buy manufacturing assets from Korea-based manufacturer Konasol, including a newly constructed facility for producing deposition materials such as disc-shaped sputtering targets. 'The acquisition strengthens our footprint in Asia to support and service global Tier I semiconductor customers and expands our position as a leading global supplier of deposition materials,' Jugal Vijayvargiya, Materion's president and CEO, said in a statement. Even as international companies pledge to invest in the United States to avoid increased costs related to tariffs, some U.S. firms are looking at Asia for closer proximity to rare earth metals. The U.S. is largely dependent on China for rare earth imports. Uli Blankenstein, vice president of strategy and execution for Materion's electronic materials division, said in an email that the acquisition would improve the company's proximity to customers in the Asia Pacific region, such as semiconductor manufacturers, and add new operational capabilities. 'Together these things can only improve our connection with customers in the region,' Blankenstein wrote. If the deal closes, Blankenstein said eight Konasol employees will join Materion. Financial terms and factory details were not disclosed. Materion, founded in 1931 as Brush Beryllium Company with a focus on mining and metals, has transformed into a supplier of advanced materials to the semiconductor, industrial, energy and automotive sectors. The company has partnered with NASA and the Idaho National Lab on research and development projects, as well as Kairo Power to advance clean energy. Materion operates roughly 25 manufacturing sites around the world, according to its website. About half of its footprint is in the United States, with the remaining sites in Europe and Asia. The latest deal with Konasol would expand Materion's capacity into South Korea for the first time. The company's electronic materials division, which includes electric vehicle battery and deposition materials, grew to $335 million in sales in 2023, according to an investor presentation. That marked an increase from $196 million in 2020, driven in part by advancements in AI and 5G connectivity. Materion generated net sales of $1.7 billion in 2024, according to its annual report. The company saw net income of $5.9 million for the period, down from $95.7 million, citing challenging market factors. Pacers' Rick Carlisle thought Knicks firing Tom Thibodeau was ‘one of those fake AI things'

OKLAHOMA CITY — Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle thought news of the Knicks' firing Tom Thibodeau was 'was one of those fake AI things' at first. 'No way. There's no way possible,' Carlisle said Wednesday on NBA Finals Media Day. 'I have great respect for Thibs. I go back with him a very long way. I was surprised.' Advertisement Carlisle's Pacers were the last team Thibodeau coached against while directing the Knicks, with Indiana eliminating New York in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals in Indianapolis. Two days later, the Knicks relieved Thibodeau of his duties, suggesting a change was needed for New York to take the next step of winning a championship. The Pacers, meanwhile, will play Oklahoma City in Game 1 of the NBA Finals at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. Carlisle is not only a friend and colleague of Thibodeau, but he is also the president of the National Basketball Coaches Association, a trade group for pro and college coaches. So when there is ever a surprise firing — and in the NBA it happens all the time — Carlisle is often asked about it. For some context, the head coaches who won NBA titles in 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023 are no longer employed by the teams they guided to titles, a testament to how fickle the industry is when reaching the ultimate goal does not bring much job security. Of the coaches who won the finals in those years and were later dismissed, only Nick Nurse held on in Toronto for more than three seasons after a championship, with his title coming in 2019. 'I always say shocked — sometimes you get numb and you're not shocked,' said Carlisle, who has the Pacers in the NBA Finals (as a No. 4 seed) for the first time since 2000. 'The Knicks have such a unique situation with so much attention and such a large fan base and such a worldwide following, it's one of the most difficult jobs to take. The guys that have been most successful, Red Holzman, Pat Riley, Jeff Van Gundy, Rick Pitino, had a short run but a very effective run. 'There were a lot of lean years,' Carlisle continued. 'Thibs went in there and changed so much.' In five seasons in New York, Thibodeau went 224-176 in the regular season and 24-23 in the playoffs. The Knicks entered this year's tournament as a No. 3 seed after going 0-10 against the league's top three teams during the regular season. But the Knicks survived their first-round series against Detroit and then upset the defending-champion Boston Celtics to get to the conference finals for the first time in 25 years. Advertisement 'I know how the players feel about him, too, so there's not much else to say,' Carlisle said. 'I mean, teams and ownership can make these decisions unilaterally, and it's their right to do that. 'So, Tom will certainly be fine,' Carlisle said. 'I don't think he's going to have any problem finding his next job. It's just going to depend on when he's ready to jump back in again.'
