Sinethemba Qeshile's one-day career revival led SA A to series victory in St Lucia

ABOUT six years ago, fresh out of matric at Hudson Park High School in East London, a 19-year-old Sinethemba Qeshile set the country alight with a List A century against a then-Temba Bavuma-led Lions side.
That innings of 121 runs in one-day cricket was followed by a first-class knock of 99 in Gqeberha against a Knights bowling attack led by Duanne Olivier, who at the time was feared by most of the top batters in the world.
Despite earning a Proteas T20 International cap a couple of weeks after his maiden List A century, Qeshile would somehow almost vanish into the domestic cricket wilderness, like many Eastern Cape-based cricketers before him.
Despite having played some big knocks in the Four-Day Series, including a century against the Kagiso Rabada-led Lions bowling attack, Qeshile's one-day cricket returns just never met the expectations, having scored a century in the format at 19.
The inconsistency in his role while playing at the Warriors also did not help as the right-handed batter simply struggled for six consecutive years.
However, in the ongoing South Africa A tour of the West Indies, it seems that something has finally clicked for Qeshile in the limited-overs arena.
The now-26-year-old announced his arrival in St Lucia with a half-century in the first one-day game, and followed up with an innings of 126 off 106 balls (18x4, 1x6) in the second encounter as he smashed international bowlers such as Oshane Thomas all around the Daren Sammy International Cricket Ground.
Though he fell cheaply in the third and final match of the one-day series on Tuesday, Qeshile's heroics saw the visitors secure a 2-0 series victory as the second match was abandoned due to persistent rain in the second innings.
Qeshile also finished as the leading run-scorer in the series with 197 at an average of 65.66, and was followed by Cape Town-born Jason Smith with 153 at an average of 76.5 and Rivaldo Moonsamy with 149 at an average of 49.
With the bat, Marques Ackerman, Jordan Herman and Mihlali Mpongwana brought up at least one half-century in the series, playing a key role in helping the visitors win the contest.
Mpongwana, as a seam-bowling all-rounder, made his presence felt with the ball as well, taking a total of four wickets, while seamer Tshepo Moreki finished the series as the leading wicket-taker with six scalps.

Kaizer Chiefs drop Toyota Cup reveal as a contract shake Naturena
Kaizer Chiefs have officially revealed the striking new-look Toyota Cup ahead of their high-profile pre-season friendly against Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko. The much-anticipated clash takes place this Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, setting the tone for what fans hope will be a rejuvenated 2025/2026 campaign. Fresh from an intense pre-season tour in the Netherlands. The Glamour Boys aim to bounce back from last year's nightmare 4-0 defeat to Tanzanian powerhouse Young Africans SC. While preparing to impress on the pitch, Chiefs have also moved swiftly behind the scenes to secure their long-term future. The Naturena-based side has already begun contract talks with several core players whose current deals expire in June 2026. One of the top priorities is first-choice goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma. A source close to the club confirmed. 'Kaizer Chiefs have set the wheels in motion to retain Bvuma as part of a broader mission to lock down their core players at Naturena.' The 30-year-old shot-stopper has received a proposed two-year contract extension, which would keep him at the club until June 2028. Chiefs believe Bvuma still has plenty to offer as they aim to re-establish themselves as title contenders. Since breaking into the senior team in 2016, Bvuma has developed into a reliable figure within the Amakhosi setup. Club insiders now view him as a key member of the leadership group. 'He's become an important part of our plans moving forward,' a source revealed. With only 12 months remaining on his current contract. Chiefs know the timing of this extension is critical. The club wants to ensure stability and continuity, especially as they gear up for a season where silverware remains a non-negotiable objective. Do you like the new Kaizer Chiefs Toyota Cup trophy? Orlando Pirates news: Coach Ouaddou backed to surpass Riveiro
Orlando Pirates legend Edward Motale has thrown his support behind new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, boldly predicting that the Moroccan mentor will surpass the achievements of his predecessor, Jose Riveiro. Ouaddou takes over a finely-tuned club after Riveiro led Pirates to six finals and five trophies in three seasons. However, Motale believes the new man in charge brings something different. 'What I appreciate about him is that he has played the game at the highest level,' Motale told KickOff . 'So he understands what it takes to succeed in football.' Ouaddou's first official test will come in the MTN8 quarter-finals against Polokwane City. Riveiro famously won the competition in his debut season, and expectations are high that Ouaddou can repeat that feat. Motale, who captained Orlando Pirates to the 1995 CAF Champions League title, is encouraged by the squad Ouaddou is assembling. With ten signings made so far, competition is fierce across all positions. 'You can see that the coach believes in hard work and youth,' said Motale. 'He's done his research. The team he has put together will compete strongly this season.' The former Marumo Gallants coach was praised for the impact he had at the Limpopo-based club late last season. Despite joining with only five games remaining, he managed to steady the ship and gain respect from players and supporters alike. 'If he had arrived earlier, he would have done even better with them,' said Motale. 'He brought direction to that team.' With Ouaddou's vision, the depth of the squad, and a renewed sense of purpose, the Buccaneers are aiming to challenge for top honours. 'Orlando Pirates will definitely win the league this coming season,' Motale predicted. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Bafana Bafana international Lebogang Phiri shares views on youth football development
BAFANA Bafana midfielder Lebogang Phiri attendend the Gauteng leg of the Engen Knockout Challenge. | Supplied French-based Bafana Bafana midfielder and Engen Knockout Challenge graduate Lebogang Phiri recently made a powerful return to the tournament that helped shape his career. Phiri spent some time engaging with players, watching matches, and reflecting on the impact of grassroots football. 'This is not just another youth tournament. I don't think people always realise the gravity of it,' said Phiri. 'Tournaments like the Engen Knockout Challenge are whereyou get the next top talents and future big-name players. "It's where players learn to handle pressure, build big-match temperament, and get exposed to the type of support and attention that prepares them for the next level. "If a young player approaches this platform with the right mindset, it can change their career.' As someone who rose through the same ranks, Phiri understands the environment better than most. Beyond the on-field action, he emphasised the off-field growth players experience. 'The pressure is high, and the expectations are real and because of that, players learn respect, discipline, and great sportsmanship," said Phiri. "These are qualities you don't always get from just training or league matches. This kind of environment shapes you in every way as a footballer.' His presence at the Gauteng playoffs underscored the 2025 campaign theme 'It's Your Moment, Future Diski Legends', serving as a living example of what is possible when talent meets opportunity. Phiri's message to the next generation was clear: make this moment count, because the path to greatness often starts with a platform like the Engen Knockout Challenge.
