Colton Herta goes flying in scary crash during Indy 500 qualifiers, marking third incident of the weekend

Yahoo17-05-2025

American driver Colton Herta suffered a scary crash during the qualification round of the Indianapolis 500 on Saturday. Herta went airborne and flipped his car after spinning out and hitting a wall.
The 25-year-old driver walked away from the car on his own, and was evaluated by medical staff. IndyCar later said that Herta had been released and cleared to drive.
"Luckily these days these crashes look a lot scarier than they feel — not to say that one felt good," Herta said, via the Associated Press. "There were no real signs leading to it. We were super happy with the car this morning. Went out loose and couldn't even get Lap 1 in."

The crash marks the third accident so far this weekend. Hours before Herta's wreck, New Zealand driver Marcus Armstrong spun out and crashed during a practice round Saturday morning. Armstrong was stretchered off from the crash, but later released by medical staff.
Both Herta and Armstrong's wrecks took place just after Turn 1, where drivers can become vulnerable to wind gusts.
All of this comes after Kyffin Simpson also suffered a major wreck during "Fast Friday" practice, going airborne after wobbling on Turn 4.
Herta may still be able to compete if his team is able to get his backup car ready in time. Per the AP, if the car is not ready for Saturday's qualifying round, Herta may be able to join the last-chance qualifier on Sunday in the final row.
Qualifying for the race is taking place Saturday and Sunday, before practices and events preparing for race day on Sunday, May 25.

Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. 'There's a lot to like about his bat right now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Just dominating pitches in the strike zone. That's who he is. We know that the power's always been there, but now we're looking at a really good hitter.' Alonso wasn't the only Mets player with a banner day. Juan Soto had three hits and walked three times to reach base in all six plate appearances. He became the first New York player to accomplish that feat since Alonso on Aug. 15, 2019, at Atlanta. 'It's not easy to do at the big league level,' Mendoza said. 'You get six times at the plate and you find a way to get on base. Finally getting results, but I feel the at-bat quality has been there.' Alonso's path toward becoming the Mets' career home run leader began when he set the major league record for rookies with 53 in 2019. He has hit at least 34 homers in each of his five full big league seasons and is on pace for 41 this year. 'Pete's been pretty incredible this year. He's been locked in every single at-bat,' said teammate Jeff McNeil, who also hit two home runs Sunday. 'Seems like big situations he's going to do some damage. 'It's fun to watch and I feel like he's putting on a show every time he's at the ballpark.' ___ AP MLB: recommended

SGA3K: Gilgeous-Alexander reaches 3,000 points for season, 12th player to do so in NBA history

Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The milestones keep coming for Oklahoma City's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. With his first basket of Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night, Gilgeous-Alexander — the NBA's reigning MVP — reached the 3,000-point mark for the season, including playoffs. The milestone came on a 10-footer with 8:24 left in the opening quarter. He needed only two points to get there Sunday, after scoring 38 in Oklahoma City's Game 1 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. This is the 25th time in NBA history that a player has scored 3,000 points in a season. Michael Jordan did it 10 times, Wilt Chamberlain did it five and 10 other players — Bob McAdoo, Elgin Baylor, James Harden, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Luka Doncic, Rick Barry, Shaquille O'Neal and now Gilgeous-Alexander — have done it once. Gilgeous-Alexander also is the fourth player to score that many points while also handing out at least 600 assists in the same season. Jordan did that three times, while Doncic and Harden have done so once. ___ AP NBA: recommended

Giants trade struggling 1B/OF LaMonte Wade Jr. and cash to Angels

Associated Press ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels acquired veteran first baseman and outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. and cash from the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. The Angels will send cash or a player to be named to San Francisco for the 31-year-old Wade, who had been with the Giants since 2021. The team designated him for assignment last Wednesday. Los Angeles right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Wade batted .167 with one homer and 15 RBIs for the Giants this season, his struggles culminating with a 2-for-17 performance on the team's most recent road trip. Wade hit a career-high .260 last season, and he gained a reputation in San Francisco for clutch late-game performances. The Angels currently have Nolan Schanuel at first base and six outfielders on their major league roster, but some have position flexibility. Angels general manager Perry Minasian and Giants general manager Zack Minasian are brothers. ___ AP MLB: recommended
