Matthew Kessel gets engaged to his girlfriend while eyeing a bigger NHL role with the St. Louis Blues

Image via X Matthew Kessel is celebrating a milestone off the ice, but the battle for ice time in St. Louis is just heating up. The 25-year-old defenseman recently revealed on Instagram that he's engaged to longtime girlfriend Allie, a personal victory that has Blues fans cheering. Yet as he steps into this exciting new chapter of life, Kessel faces a different kind of challenge on the rink—solidifying his role in a crowded blue line rotation that now features emerging talent Tyler Tucker and newly acquired Logan Mailloux. Can Kessel break through and make his mark next season? From UMass standout to St. Louis Blues blueliner: Matthew Kessel's NHL journey so far Drafted 150th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Matthew Kessel took the long road to the pros. After three seasons at UMass, he signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Blues on March 28, 2022, and finished that year with their AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds. His NHL debut came on April 2, 2023, against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. 'It was surreal to finally step onto NHL ice,' Kessel said after the game. He played two contests before returning to Springfield but left with a taste for more. Kessel started the 2023–24 season in the AHL but earned a call-up on December 30, 2023. He quickly made an impact, recording his first NHL point—an assist on a goal by Alexey Toropchenko—on February 13 at Enterprise Center. Just a month later, on March 13, Kessel signed a two-year, one-way contract extension, proving the Blues see potential in his game. Then came the big moment. On April 7, in his 37th NHL appearance, Kessel scored his first career goal against Anaheim Ducks goalie Lukáš Dostál. 'That one felt amazing,' Kessel said postgame. 'You dream about that as a kid.' Despite his progress—29 games last season and 10 points (one goal, nine assists) across 70 NHL appearances—Kessel's role isn't guaranteed. The rise of Tyler Tucker and the recent addition of Logan Mailloux from Montreal add layers of competition. When asked about his mindset this offseason, Kessel said, 'I want to contribute in any way I can and keep earning my spot.' With a new contract and growing confidence, the 2025–26 season could define Kessel's future in St. Louis Blues . What's next for Matthew Kessel as he balances engagement and his NHL future with the St. Louis Blues? Matthew Kessel's personal life is thriving, and now the spotlight shifts back to the ice. Will the Blues defenseman carve out a bigger role amid stiff competition—or will the team's depth limit his minutes? One thing's certain: the battle for the blue line in St. Louis will be one to watch. Also Read: Could Kirill Kaprizov join Connor Bedard? Declan Rice defends new teammate Noni Madueke from critics; says he will 'shock a lot of people'

Arsenal's midfield talisman Declan Rice has sprung in support of new signing Noni Madueke from Chelsea. The winger's acquisition for £48.5m had triggered a massive backlash from #NoToMadueke has gained traction on X, and murals outside the club's Emirates Stadium have been vandalised with 'Arteta out'. But Rice is defiantly behind his new teammate, as Arsenal seek to end their prolonged drought for an EPL title, which they last won two decades ago as well as bring their first ever Champions League silverware. 'He's going to shock a lot of people and I can't wait for him to come,' said Rice, who is also his England teammate. He added: 'I know how driven he is. I've spoken to him and you're going to see what he's about this season. He wants to prove and show everyone what he really can do. He's hungry, he wants to play for Arsenal and that's the type of players we want. It's so positive. People have been speaking internally – the players, the staff. We know the player that we're getting and we're really looking forward to having him at our club. It's going to be really exciting.' Pacy and nimble, though wasteful in front of goals during his Chelsea days, he has 20 goals from 92 appearances for the Blues and has already played for England. His trickery to get past the defenders is seen as a big asset. 'When you're an attacking player and in your mind the first thought you have is to go past your defender, that's an unbelievable trait to have,' Rice said about Madueke's ability,' he observed. He is among the finest dribblers in the league too. As much as 33 per cent of his total carries were progressive, bettered only by Manchester City's Jeremy Doku. 'He's going to bring that to the squad along with the other wingers we have. Let's be real – last year we hardly had any depth in any areas. We played half the season pretty much with so many injuries, so to now be able to rotate and push in different competitions with different players is going to be really, really good. That's key for us,' he said. While he is seen as a cover for Bukayo Saka, he brings another dimension and offers Mikel Arteta tactical flexibility. He could be employed as a touchline winger, drifting wide and crossing into the box from the left, like conventional wingers used to. He could also be deployed on both flanks as he is good with both feet. Last season, even when playing largely on the right, 34.2 per cent of his shots came from the right foot, his weaker one.

Madueke Becomes 6th Chelsea Player To Join Arteta's Arsenal: Who Are The Rest...

Last Updated: Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga joined Arsenal from Chelsea, adding to Mikel Arteta's six signings from Premier League rivals. Noni Madueke became the latest to trade the blue of Chelsea for the red and white of Arsenal despite the north London rivalry between the Premier League clubs. Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga's moves from Chelsea to Arsenal this month took the total of players signed from the Blues by Gunners manager Mikel Arteta to six in five-and-a-half years. Here's a look at others who have switched between the two London clubs before and after the Mikel Arteta era. Who Did Mikel Arteta Sign At Arsenal From Chelsea? Kai Havertz (Chelsea to Arsenal, 2023) Havertz thrived under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, etching his name into club history with the winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City. But once Tuchel was gone and Graham Potter took over at Stamford Bridge, Havertz struggled in a system that no longer suited him. The German moved to Arsenal, where, under Arteta, he has rediscovered his rhythm and consistency, becoming a key piece in the Gunners' ongoing push for Premier League glory. But when Tuchel was shown the door, the Italian midfielder's influence diminished, and Jorginho set his sights across London, lured by the red of Arsenal and the promise of Arteta's ambitious project. He stayed for two years, an important, experienced head on and off the pitch before returning to Brazil, the country of his birth. Willian (Chelsea to Arsenal, 2020) The Brazilian winger was an important member of Chelsea's title-winning sides in 2014/15 and 2016/17. Despite starring on his Arsenal debut after joining on a free transfer, assisting two goals in a 3-0 win at Fulham, he only managed one goal and three assists over his subsequent 24 appearances before re-joining his boyhood club Corinthians in 2021. Raheem Sterling (Chelsea To Arsenal, 2024-25 on Loan) Raheem Sterling joined Chelsea on in 2022 for £47.5 million, making his debut in a 1–0 win over Everton and scored his first goals with a brace against Leicester City. He continued his scoring streak in the Champions League with a goal against RB Salzburg under Graham Potter and contributed to Chelsea's advancement to the quarterfinals by scoring against Borussia Dortmund. Sterling concluded the 2022–23 season with a brace against Nottingham Forest and began the 2023–24 season strongly, netting twice in a 3–0 victory over Luton Town. However, in August 2024, new manager Enzo Maresca disclosed that Sterling was not part of his plans and would struggle for game time. Sterling joined Arsenal on loan in August for the 2024–25 season. He made his first start for the club in September and scored the fourth goal in a 5–1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the third round of the EFL Cup. He did little much after at Arensal and returned to Chelsea after his loan expired. Who Are The Other Players Who Signed For Arsenal From Chelsea? David Luiz (Chelsea to Arsenal, 2019) A Premier League winner with Chelsea in 2016/17, David Luiz made the switch to Arsenal in the summer of 2019. He lifted the FA Cup with the Gunners in his first season at the club under Arteta, but his stay in north London was short-lived, with the centre-back returning to his native Brazil in 2021, joining Flamengo. William Gallas (Chelsea to Arsenal, 2006) As part of the deal that led to Cole moving to Chelsea, Gallas joined Arsenal. After winning two Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge, the French defender spent four seasons with the Gunners, making 101 league appearances, before moving to a third London club, Tottenham Hotspur, in 2010. Petr Cech (Chelsea to Arsenal, 2015) The Czech goalkeeper won the lot at Chelsea: four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, the Champions League, and the Europa League. He moved to Arsenal in 2015 and won the Golden Glove award in his first season at the club, keeping 16 clean sheets, before picking up another FA Cup winners' medal in 2016/17. Lassana Diarra (Chelsea to Arsenal, 2007) Limited to only 13 Premier League appearances in two years at Chelsea, Diarra was sold to Arsenal in 2007. The French midfielder was also unable to establish himself at Emirates Stadium, featuring only seven times in the league before joining Portsmouth five months later. Yossi Benayoun (Chelsea to Arsenal, 2011) top videos View all A fringe player at Chelsea, Benayoun moved on loan to Arsenal for the 2011/12 season. The Israeli enjoyed more success in north London, scoring four goals in 19 appearances, and his influence helped the Gunners finish third and qualify for the Champions League.
