South Africa's Akani Simbine and Jamaica's Kishane Thompson compete in men's 100m during the Shanghai/Keqiao Diamond League meet.
EUGENE – Jamaican Kishane Thompson is looking forward to 'fireworks' when he next faces American Noah Lyles in a rematch of the Paris Olympics 100 metre final – whenever that showdown materializes.
Lyles edged Thompson by just .005sec in the 100m final in the French capital 11 months ago and they have not faced each other since then.
Thompson, in red-hot form ahead of the Eugene Diamond League meeting on July 5 – in which Lyles is not entered – said he is 'most definitely' eager to take on the American again.
'I'm a very competitive person,' Thompson said.
'I might not show it, but when it comes to competing with a phenomenal person, I think he's a phenomenal athlete, great rival. So, yeah, of course, when he's ready to step back on the track and we meet it's going to be fireworks for sure.'
It remains to be seen whether they will meet before the World Championships, which will be held in Tokyo from Sept 13 to 21.
Lyles has yet to race a 100m or 200m this season, but 23-year-old Thompson is riding high after winning the 100m at the Jamaican national athletics trials in a blistering 9.75sec on June 27.

'I'm really grateful for that race,' he added. 'So far we're just working on the execution, bit by bit trying to put everything together.
'For early season it's just trying to find that sweet spot, how it feels to compete at a high level while doing he best execution out there as possible. Also getting that competition vibe going and just enjoying myself.
'Anything is possible, but I won't jinx it... I just got to come out there, execute, do my best, you know, enjoy myself.'

Bonmati's health remains priority, Tome says ahead of Belgium game

The 27-year-old played the final nine minutes in the world champions' 5-0 thrashing of Portugal on Thursday, and was itching to play a bigger role. "I'm ready for 90 minutes and more," the Barcelona player said in an interview with RTVE. "You know my mentality and my ambition; if I'm healthy, I'm never going to complain." Bonmati was frustrated at spending most of the Portugal game on the bench, Tome said, stressing that her health was the main consideration. "She has a very high mental capacity. She's super focused in the tournament," Tome told reporters on Sunday. "It's a pity she was sick at the beginning. We were afraid at the beginning, when we knew what she had, but she recovered very quickly. "The other day, talking to the medical services, she played what she could play, because priority was her health. "That's the line we will follow. Aitana is available (on Monday), and we will decide what the game, the team needs and what's most suitable with all the information we have. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll will also be available against Belgium, Tome said, after being ill with what Spanish media reported was tonsillitis. "We'll decide if she'll be playing or not. I think the Belgium coach (Elisabet Gunnarsdottir) is wondering if she's playing or not, but we're not giving any additional information," Tome said. "But the positive thing is that she is improving, and that what she has is not serious." Spain, who have never won the Women's Euros but are favourites in Switzerland, top Group B, while Belgium are third having lost their opener 1-0 to Italy. REUTERS

Norris wins in the wet as Piastri fumes and Hulkenberg stuns

The Australian, his championship lead cut to eight points from 15, had looked a more likely winner but a 10-second penalty for braking sharply behind the safety car while leading ultimately left Norris as the one celebrating. McLaren had indicated they could appeal, prompting Piastri to suggest more in hope than expectation that he and Norris switch places, but in the end the team told the drivers to continue racing for position. Norris was overcome by emotion, although he said he had not cried behind the visor, as he took the chequered flag 6.8 seconds clear. "We did it, at home. Oh my god, we did it. It's beautiful," he gasped over the radio after winning back-to-back races for the first time. "Apart from a championship, I think this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings and in terms of achievement, being proud, all of it," he said later. It was the Briton's fourth win of the season, one less than Piastri, and McLaren's fifth one-two. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. "I'm not going to say much. I'll get myself in trouble. Well done to Nico. I think that's the highlight of the day," he said acidly of third-placed finisher Nico Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg's achievement was also emotional, the 37-year-old German making up 16 places to shed an unwanted record of the most races without a podium in Formula One history -- Sunday being his first in 239 starts. "I don't think I can comprehend what we've just done," said the stunned German before wild pitlane celebrations with his teammates. "It feels good. It's been a long time coming, hasn't it? But I always knew we had it in us, I have it in me, somewhere." HAMILTON FOURTH Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, last year's winner with Mercedes, finished fourth with Red Bull's Max Verstappen fifth after starting on pole position but spinning out of contention. Pierre Gasly was sixth for Alpine, Lance Stroll seventh for Aston Martin -- after running third for a while -- and Alex Albon eighth for Williams. Fernando Alonso gave Aston Martin a double points finish in ninth at their home race and George Russell bagged the final point for Mercedes. Organisers said 168,000 people attended the race with a record four-day crowd of half a million. The whole field had looked set to start on intermediates but Russell and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc peeled into the pitlane on the formation lap to switch to slicks, leaving grid slots four and six empty. Verstappen led away from pole, the rest following in the spray, with Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson colliding with Haas's Esteban Ocon and pulling off to retire on the Wellington straight. "Who the hell was that? I'm out," exclaimed the New Zealander. A virtual safety car was in place for a couple of laps, with Argentine rookie Franco Colapinto also retiring his Alpine with a gearbox problem after starting from the pit lane. The virtual safety car was triggered for a second time on lap six when Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto spun into the gravel, got going again and then pulled over with a severely damaged rear wing. Piastri got past Verstappen on lap eight, shortly after racing resumed, and Norris moved up to second on lap 11 when the champion ran wide at Becketts with his tyres struggling for grip. Both McLarens pitted on lap 12, followed by Verstappen who regained second place when Norris was held up with a front-left wheel issue. The full safety car bunched up the field again on lap 14 as the rain fell more heavily and conditions became more treacherous, and stayed out for three laps. As soon as it came in Isack Hadjar crashed his Racing Bulls into the back of Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes in heavy spray and the safety car was back out again. When it returned to the pits on lap 22, Piastri suddenly slowed and Verstappen inadvertently went past in a breach of the rules and spun at Stowe on the restart, dropping down to 11th. Stewards ruled Piastri was at fault and handed him the 10- second penalty, which he served nine laps from the end. REUTERS

Dog freed from hot locker after owner puts it inside to tour castle in Germany

BERLIN - A dog was rescued from a locker for valuables at Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany after its owner shut her pet inside over the objections of other tourists so that she could visit the famous attraction, police said on July 6. Neuschwanstein, a picture-postcard castle with surging turrets nestled in the Alps near the border with Austria, is one of Germany's top tourist attractions. Despite it being a hot summer's day and half the locker already having been filled by a pram, the woman locked the dog inside the small space and left to tour the castle, police in the nearby town of Fuessen said in a statement. Security staff were alerted and freed the dog, they added. 'The dog was fortunately unharmed but visibly glad when it was rescued from the already hot locker,' the police statement said, adding that officers deployed to the scene took him back to the police station. The police did not specify what breed the dog was but said it was of 'medium' size and about 60cm tall at the shoulder. An officer on duty at Fuessen police station contacted by telephone said the dog was a mongrel. Police said they had initiated criminal proceedings against the owner on suspicion of breaking Germany's animal welfare law. REUTERS Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed.
